T. P. MARTIN;
PROTECTOR FOR BOOK CORNERS. No. 318,486. Patented May 26, 1885.
urrn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS F. MARTIN, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PROTECTOR FOR BOOK-CORNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,486, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed February 27, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MARTIN, of Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Protectors for Book-Corners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This improvement relates to that class of inventions designed to protect and stiffen or. support the covers of lodgers, day-books, and other heavy or bulky blankbooks, albums, and other volumes, to prevent the corners of said covers from becoming bent, worn, or broken by the more or less constant use and handling of the books.
To these ends my invention consists of a flexible non-metallic support and protector for corners of books and other covers, the said protector being provided with a flange, and being formed, bent,or fashioned to conform to the shape or contour of a book-cover at its corner, and adapted to be secured thereto, substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bookcover, showing my improved support and protector as applied to the corners thereof; Fig. 2, a section on line 00 m, Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the support and protector removed.
The support and protector A is preferably formed from a strip of sole-leather, which is pressed, bent, and worked into shape to form the rounded outer or folded edge, a, and the flange or tapered portion or inner edge, a, the said flange a being notched or cut at the point where the protector A is to be bent or turned about the corner of the cover 0, to extend therefrom along its edge, the rounded or folded edge a of the protector being exposed at the outer surface of the cover, while the flange a, lapped onto the inner surface of said cover, is secured to the cover, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, by any suitable adhesive substance.
Instead of being confined merely to the cor- 11ers of the covers of a book, the support and protector A may be enlarged and extended to protect the entire edge of the cover, or more or less of the said edge, or-such parts thereof as are subjected to the greatest wear, more particularly when the book is placed within or removed from a book-case, fire-proof vault, safe, &c. The ends 0 of the support A will be tapered or shaved to a thin edge, to thus obviate a shoulder where the outer covering or surface of cloth or paper of the book-cover overlaps and covers the end of the protector.
In the drawings, B represents the usual piece of leather pasted upon the flat side of the cover.
The protector A, made preferably of leather, as stated, gives a strong firm support to the corners of a book-cover to prevent their becoming bent or broken, and also protects the same from wear, and when extended to cover the entire lower or bottom edges of the covers the book is fully protected from wear at the parts most in need of protection. Further, my improved support and protector for book-covers will not scratch, indent, or otherwise injure desks and other furniture with which books having their covers so protected are brought into contact when in use.
Rawhide, india -rubber, leatherboard, or other analogous non-metallic material may be substituted for leather in the manufacture of my improved support and protector.
I claim- A non-metallic support and protector for book covers, consisting, essentially, of the leather or other strip,A, having a rounded or folded portion, a, and the notched flange a, arranged in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the portion a, the said portion a being bent at a point next the notch in the flange a, as specified, and having the tapered ends 0, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub-- scribing witnesses.
THOS. F. MARTIN.
