It is an object of the present invention to provide vari ous types of article-holding attachments for various types of hinged and covered cases, boxes, containers, receptacles and the like when such cases, etc. are ready for use in open position. Thus, the articles stored in such cases can be displayed or made ready for any special-purpose use when such cases are in open condition by utilizing the same cases, etc. in which they are stored without using entirely new cases and holding means other than that provided by the attachments and the cases themselves. The novel methods include new and useful attachments or adapters that take advantage of the existing construction of such cases, etc., as well as of the construction of new cases, etc.

Another object of this invention is to provide a case and the like with an attachable and detachable adapter which will support the lid of an enclosing case, etc. in open position so that the articles stored in such cases, etc. can be taken out of, and returned to, these cases without the necessity of lifting up and closing the lid each time any of the articles are used.

Another object of this invention is to provide a case and the like with an attachable and detachable articleholding adapter for use respectively as a rack and as a carrying case, etc.

Another object of this invention is to provide a new, useful, economical and convenient dual purpose product to serve as a storage case, etc. in closed condition and as a rack or ready-to-use article holder when in open position.

Another object of this invention is to provide new and existing cases, etc. with additional article-carrying supports which permit varying and interchangeable articlesupporting means for the articles supported thereon.

Another object of this invention is to provide new and useful special-purpose cases, etc. that are so constructed as to permit the articles thereon to be either hung or supported in flat position or both.

Another object of this invention is to provide a comand useful product from an otherwise discarded case, etc. by converting the throw away case, etc. into an article holder or display case.

Another object of this invention is to provide a combination storage case and rack that can be used in open utility position for display purposes of the articles stored therein, such as jewelry, cosmetics, toilet articles, watches, sundries, etc.

Another object of this invenion is to provide a combination storage case and rack that can be used in open utility position for special purposes for which the articles stored within the case have been designed.

Another object of this invention is to provide a specialpurpose shaving gear holder in open utility position, from a storage case containing the same shaving gear in closed position.

Another object of this invention is to provide a shaving gear holder that can fit neatly into a conventional bathroom medicine cabinet and which will permit the shaving gear to be taken out and returned without interfering with, or knocking over of, the other articles stored in the cabinet.

Another object of this invention is to provide a shaving gear rack from a shaving gear storage case by attaching an adapter to the top and bottom sections of the case.

Another object of this invention is to provide a shaving gear rack from a shaving gear storage case by attaching an adapter to the top section only of the case.

Another object of this invention is to provide a shaving gear rack from a shaving gear storage case by attaching an adapter to the bottom section only of the case.

Another object of this invention is to provide a rack .for an electric razor, cord and other related accessories by conversion from the enclosing case as bought.

Another object of this invention is to provide a dual purpose shaving case that can easily be converted from a traveling case into a shaving rack for use at home, and vice versa.

Another object of this invention is to provide a case and the like with an article holding attachment having means for accommodating or supporting any kind of shaving gear equipment used in any method of shaving such as a safety razor, electric razor, straight razor, shaving brush, etc.

Another object of this invention is to provide a rack, stand, receptacle, container and the like that is small, compact, comparatively cheap to manufacture and that can be fabricated out of conventional material at hand.

These and other objects of the present invention will become apparent as the description of the invention proceeds.

In order to avoid too much repetition, the words attachment, adapter and insert are considered synonymous and have been used interchangeably.

The invention is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions some of which by way of illustration are shown on the accompanying drawings, but it is to be expressly understood that the drawings are for purpose of illustration only, and are not to be construed as a definition of the limits of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims for that purpose.

Referring now in detail to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, and in which features illustrated in only some of the figures may be embodied in the structures illustrated in the other figures and in which a wide variety of various combinations of the several features illustrated and described can be constructed under the teaching of the present invention.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective View of the article holding attachment device mounted in a conventional hinged or enclosing case.

FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the article holding device, showing a modified form for the top and bottom afiixing means, mounted in a conventional hinged or enclosing case.

With reference to FIGURE 1, there is illustrated the article holding attachment 1i), mounted in its utility positionin the enclosing case 2%. The insert It) is composed of a vertical member ill, having a resilient foot mounting 12, provided with capped supporting members 13, suitable for supporting an article such as a conventional safety razor or shaving brush} The insert 10 is further provided with an engagement slot 14, to suitably effect a snap-locking action with the extended lip 22, of the cover 21, which is hingedly mounted to the case 2 0.

In the functioning of my invention the insert lti is placed into the opened case 20, with the resilient foot member 12 being depressed downwardly on-the upper floor plane 23 of the case 269 and simultaneously pressed backwardly until the slot 14 receives the lip 22 of the cover 21. At this point the urging force is released and the insert 10, through the memory reaction of the resilient material in the foot 12, establishes a firm connection between the cover 21 and the upper floor plane 23 of the case 20; thus providing a convenient article supporting device lthsuitably stabilized in a verticalplane through the attachment to the carrying case 20.

The insertion operationis more clearly set-forth in FIGUREBa, which illustrates schematically the sequence required. Theinsert Iii, is placed, in a tilted position with the footIZ, resting on the floor 23 of the case 20, as shown in the illustration on the left side; at this point in the function the height A, signifies the distance of the lip 22 above the floor 23 and height B signifies the distance of the engagement slot 14,-in the member 11, above the floor 23 of the case As previously described, the insert 10, is then depressed downwardly, until the dimension B equals dimension A, as shown in the illustration on the right side; thus providing the opportunity to press, backwardly, making a snap-locking engagement with lip'22; The engagement of the lip 22 is further illustratedin FIGURE 3, wherein the slot 14 in the vertical member 11,. has received the lip 22: the depth of penetration of the lip 22 into the sl0t14 is governed by the contacting of the edge 24 of the cover 21, with the rear side of the vertical member 11.

With reference to FIGURE 2, there is illustrated the article holding insert 10, mounted in its utility-position in the enclosing case 3%) and partially showing 'a'm'odified form of the resilient foot-member. 35. This embodiment is also composed of the vertical member 11, having capped. supporting rods 13 (or any suitable article-supporting'means may be utilized such as the modifications I6 and 18 shown in FIGURES 4 and 4a respectively) and is further provided with an attachmenthole ifie of such size, shape and 'location as to receive the cylindrical projection 31 in the cover 32 of the case,'thereby facilitating a snap-fit engagement with member 11, when the insertli) is placed in its utility position. The foot member 35 .is formedin .a rectangular shape as shown in FIGURE '7, to accomodate a different'style of enclosing case 30 but is also of a resilient nature and affords the same means for insertional operationfor the article holding device 10, as previously described for the preferred form in FIGURE 1. FIGURE 3 illustrates in further detail the engagement means'att-he top of unit it when engaged in utility position with case cover 20, and also shows a means of article support in the form of conventional binder screws and posts in horizontal position. V

FIGURES 4 and 4a illustrate modifications in the embodiment ofthe article holding means, such as the. linear U-shaped member 16 fixedly attached to member 11 by screws 17 (shown inFIGURE 4) ,or the hooked type holding means 18 fixedly attached to member. 11 by screws 19 and provided .with centralized open sided aperture 15. (shown in FIGURE,v 4a). For example, U- shaped member 16 can accommodate a straight razor while member. 18 can serve either a safety razor .or a shaving bruslry 1 FIGURE 4hv illustrates a modification in member 11 wherein the article holding means is omitted in 'order that insert 10 can serve as a holder or support for cover 2 1 (FIGURE 1) or'cover 32 (FIGURE 2) when the case is in open utility position thus permitting articles to be taken out of, and returned to, the case without the necessity of opening and closing the cover.

FIGURE 5 shows the engagement of insert 1% with cover 32 by meansrof cylindrical projectionfii snap-locking into hole 36.

FIGURE 6 shows yet another embodimentin which cover 34 has a flat, butt-type edge 33. In thisstructure, insert It is attached to cover 34 by means of a pressed tight fit into a spring clamp or resilient catch member 65.

shown in larger view in FIGURE 10. Since innumerable shapes may be found insnap-type case lips, similar elastic members can be utilized as catching means for engaging shown, an alternate form of article holding means 38 fixedly mounted to member 11 by screws 39.

With reference to FIGURE 8, there is illustrated article holding insert 10, mounted in its utility position in the enclosing case 40 and provided with a slotted attachment means 45 fastened to the rear side of member 11. The member 45, shown more clearly in enlarged form in FIGURE 9, is open at both ends thereby facilitating the insertion of lip 41 which is an integral part of cover 42 (lip 41 may also be attached to cover 42). The insert is first engaged with lip 41 by the previously described member 45 and then pressed inwardly until the foot 12 contacts the floor plane 43 of case 40. The insert 10, when resting in a vertical plane, is held by the previously described resilient action of the foot 12. It is to be particularly noted from the teaching of this embodiment that any size and shape of lip or other form of projection in the cover of a case can similarly be made to engage a corresponding attaching means mounted on the rear side of the insert for the purpose of attaching the insert to an enclosing case. Thus, by the means disclosed, practically any type of enclosing cases having various types, shapes and sizes of projections in their covers, can be attached to an insert.

FIGURE 9, as previously stated, illustrates in enlarged and more clear form the conforming attaching means 4-5 on the rear of insert 10 utilized for engagement of various types, sizes and shapes of projections on the covers of various kinds of enclosing cases. Though the conforming attaching means 45 is shown in a full length of member 11, it may readily be appreciated that less than the full extremity of member 11 can be utilized.

FIGURE 10, also as previously stated, illustrates a spring clamp type attaching means 65 affixed to member 11 by screws 66 to provide for snap-lock engagement with a flat edged, butt-type case cover. Though the clamp member 65 is shown as being less than the width of member 11, it may readily be appreciated that the full extremity of the member 11 could be utilized.

FIGURE 11 illustrates one form of resilient foot mounting 12 attached to member 11 of insert 11 FIGURE 11a illustrates a further modification for the securing of insert 10 at the bottom in which member 11 is formed in a suitable manner to receive the edge of an enclosing case 6% by means of a forked section 61 having a suitable sized slot 62 to receive the vertical side 63 in a tight fit.

FIGURE 12 illustrates a spring clamp type attaching means '79 affixed to enclosing case 71. The attaching means is further provided with holes 72 for subsequent mounting as desired. The enclosing case 71 is also provided with an insertable article holding board 77 having binder screws and rods 78, and which is dimensionably suitable for press fitting into the cover 79. In lieu of using a board 7'7, the cover 79 may be provided with holes 89 to accommodate the insertion of binder screws and rods 78, thereby eliminating the necessity of a board. The hinge for the case holds the cover 79 in true vertical position.

FIGURE 13 illustrates an enclosing case 73 which is provided with an article mounting board 74 further pro vided with binder screws and posts 75. The board '74 is suitably sized to permit its being pressed into the inside of cover 76 of case 73. As in the case of FIGURE 12, in lieu of using a board 74, the cover 76 may be provided with holes to accommodate the insertion of binder screws and posts 75, thereby eliminating the necessity of using a board. The hinge for the case holds the cover 76 of the case in true vertical position.

FIGURE 14 illustrates an enclosing case 80 having a bottom 1% and a top section or cover 8'7 to which is fastened an attachment 83 comprising a vertical mounting board 82 having capped horizontal article supporting members 84. As shown, mounting board 32 has a flange 96 at its bottom which is fastened to the bottom 'of the case 103 by means of conventional fastening screws 91. Mounting board 82 is held vertically in front of cover 87 and assumes a true vertical position due to the spring action of the hinge (not shown) when the case is opened.

FIGURE 15 illustrates a case 93 with its top cover removed to which is fastened an attachment 10 having a vertical member 11 and capped horizontal article supporting members 13. The unenclosed case 93 is fastened to the attachment 10 by means of conventional screws 96 at the bottom.

FIGURE 16 illustrates a conventional hinged enclosing case 94 in which there is no spring for holding the upper cover in true vertical position when the case is opened. This case has a lock and catch 97 and creates a narrow space at the bottom between one side of the case and cover 95 when the case is opened and held by hand, thus, permitting vertical member 11 of the attachment 10 to be inserted in this space and to be fastened to out! side of the side of the case by conventional screw 95: an alternate method of fastening the case at the bottom to vertical member 11 is to offset member 11 so that it can be fastened on the inside of the case or for the vertical member 11 to have a bottom flange for fastening to the bottom of the case for which conventional screws )6 can be used. Insert 19 has conventional binder screws and rods at its top to act as an article support.

FIGURE 17 illustrates an enclosing case having a top section 98 which may be fastened to insert 10 at its top by any of the methods previously illustrated in FIGURES 1, 2,3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 but which is fastened at its bottom by spring clamp or resilient member 1&1 engaging projection 100 on the floor 99 of the enclosing case.

FIGURE 18 illustrates the bottom of member 11 of insert 10 shown in FIGURE 17 to which is attached spring clamp or resilient member 101 at 102 conforming in size, shape and location to projection 10%) shown in FIGURE 17 for snap-locking attachment thereto.

FIGURE 19 illustrates a partial vertical cross sectional view thru the enclosing case 86 shown in FIGURE 14, modified to include a top section 87 of the case which may be fastened to vertical mounting board member 83 at its top by any of the methods previously illustrated in FIGURES 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 but which is fastened at its flange 90 to bottom 1&3 of the case it by means of conventional screws 91, similarly as in FIGURE 14. This application is to hinged enclosing cases not having a spring hinge to hold the cover of the case in vertical posit-ion.

FIGURE 20 illustrates yet another embodiment for attaching an article mounting board 82 to enclosing case by insertion in slot 81 in the case 87 or by attachment to the case at its rear. In either structure, conventional fastening means and 36 are used to fasten the board to the case at the bottom. No attaching means are necessary for fastening the board to the case at the top since this embodiment applies only to those enclosing cases which have a spring hinge capable of holding upper section 37 of the case in true vertical position. While binder screws and rods 84 are shown as article holding supports, any article supporting means shown in the various figures can be utilized for this purpose.

While in the illustrated embodiments, specific fastening means are shown for attaching the article holding insert to the case, some buyers may choose to use this product as a permanent rack without detaching the insert for traveling purposes. It is therefore contemplated that where practical glue can be substituted for the conventional and specific fastening means illustrated in the drawings. Further, the various supporting means, fastening means and footing details illustrated as separate parts are contemplated to be integral with the attachment device wherever this is practical. For example, foot member 35 in FIGURE 7 can be integral with vertical member 11 and of the same elastic material if practical to do so.

Also, while lip 22 and projection 31 are shown to'be of a specificshape and size, it is contemplated that any type and size of lip or projection can be made to fit snugly. into a corresponding attachment means on the insert. Screws and other conventional fastening means'can be dispensed with in instances where snug or tight fits are feasible, as for example, in forked footing 61 shown in FIGURE 11a or the mounting board shown in FIGURE 12 can be pressed with a tight fit into the inside of the cover of the enclosing case and held in place without the use of screws. This invention contemplates the use of all types of hinged or enclosing cases with or without lock: ing means, as well as cases with detachable covers; While conventional binder screws and rods are shown as article supports in the various figures, any similar type of article supporting means may be substituted. At the bottom of FIIGURE 5, an offset to vertical member 11 is shown where this is required in certain cases. 7

Further, while the embodiments of the invention illustrated on the drawings have been described with considerable particularity, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not limited thereto, asthe same is capable of taking a wide variety of expressions as will now be apparent to those skilled in the art. Construc-.

,tions such as have been illustrated as applied to one figure can be used with equal facility 'to any of the other figures and therefore the drawings are to be taken :as illustrative only of some of the various ways in which the present invention may be embodied since a wide variety of various combinations of the several features illustrated and described can be constructed under the teaching of the present invent-ion. Changes may'also be made in the details of construction, arrangement ofparts,

size and proportion of component elements, etc. without departing from the spirit of this invention, all aswill be apparent to those skilled in the art. As an example, some enclosing cases may have projections such as extended lip' 22 or cylindrical rod 31 on the floor of the lower section or the case instead of on the upper section or cover. of the case as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2. Insuch instances, the attaching means shown at the top insert 11, as for example in FlGURES l and 2 can be applied equally well to the bottom of insert 11 to insure fastening of the foot of insert 11 to the bottom of the case.

Having thus described the construction and operation of the various embodiments ;of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact. constructions illustrated in the drawings and described herein, as various changes and modifications may be made therein which would fall within the limit and scope of the invention, and 1 consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications as come within the limit and scope of the ap pended claims. For example, article-supporting means l3, l6, l8 and 38 may be embodied in any of the struc tures illustrated, and not necessarily in only the figures shown; in other words, article holding means 38 can be used in lieu of 13 shown in FIGURE 1, or either article holding means 16 or 18 may be used in thestructure shown in FIGURE 1 in lieu of 13. Sim-. ilarly, footings 12, 3d and 61 can be interchangeably applied to theot-her footing structures illustrated in the various figures and need not apply only to the specific figure in which shown. Or support 70 in FIGURE 12 can be applied, in lieu of insert 11, to structures shown in FIGURES l, 2, or 13. Further, while the article supports shown, such as for example, 38 in FIGURE 7 and capped binder screws and rods 13- throughout the various views, indicate supporting means for only a single article, it is to be expressly understood that any number of supporting rods or notched openings can be used for holding more than one article. Reference is therefore to be had to the appended claims for a definition of said invention.

I claim:

1. The combination of an enclosing case andan'adapter attachment, said enclosing case comprising an upper and lower section hinged to each other, said upper section of said case having a flat edged, butt type case cover forming attaching means, said attachment comprising a vertical member having one or more article supports at its top, a resilient footing at its bottom and aspring clamp type attaching means fastened at its rear, said spring clamp conforming in size, shape and relative location to said butt type case cover, so that when said resilient footing is pressed downwardly onto the door of the lower section of said case and said'butt type case cover is clamped into said spring clamp on the rear of the upright member of said attachment making a snap lock engagement therewith, there is formed a rack for the support and use of articles in open'utility position.

' 2. The combination of an enclosing case and an adapter attachment, said enclosing case comprising an upper and a lower section hinged to each other and having means for being locked to each other and for being unlocked, said locking means consisting of a protruding member in said upp'ersection of said case and of a corresponding catch in said lower section, said protruding. member in said upper section forming attaching means for fastening to said adapter attachment, said adapter attachment comprising a vertical member having article supporting means at its top, a resilient mounting at its footing and an engagement slot, said engagement slot conforming in size, shape and relative location to said attaching means in the upper section of said case, so that when said resilient footing is depressed onto the floor of said lower section of said case and said protruding member forming attaching means in the'uppersection of said case is inserted in said slot in said adapter attachment making a locking engagement therewith, said enclosing case and said adapter attachment form an article holding rack.

3. The combination of an enclosing case with an attachment, said enclosing case comprising upper and lower sections hinged. to each .othensaid upper section of said case having attachingmeans, saidlattachment having attaching means at its top conformingtosaid attaching means in said upper sectionof, said case forattachment thereto, said attachment having article-supporting means, said attachment also having fasteningmeans at its bottom, said bottom fastening meanscomprising a resilient footing so that when said resilient footing is pressed down on the floor of said lower section of said case when in open condition and said attaching means on the upper section of said case issecured to said attaching means at the top of said attachmenh'said enclosing-caseand said attachment form anarticle-supporting rack.

'The combination as defined in claim 3 in which said attaching means in said upper section of said case cornprises the extreme butt-type closure'ed ge of said upper section. of said case when in upright condition and in which said attaching means in the topof said attachment comprises a spring catch member for locking engagement with said butt-type closure edge of said upper section of said case.

5. The combination as defined in claim 3 in which said attaching means in said. upper section of said case comprises an extended lip and in which said attaching means in the top of said attachment comprises an engagement slot to. suitably effect a locking action with said extended lip in said upper section of said case when in open condition.

The combination as. defined in claim 3 in which said attaching means in saidupper section of said case comprises an extended rod and in which said attaching means in said attachment comprises an aperture for tight fit engagement with said extended rod in said upper section of said case when in open position. 1

7. The combination as defined in claim ,3 in which said floor of said lower section of said case contains a project- 9 ing member and in which said resilient footing in the bottom of said attachment comprises a spring catch for locking engagement with said projecting member on the floor of said lower section of said case when in open position.
