AUTOMATIC ARTIFICIAL FINGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No,319,7'-76, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed March 3, 1885. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern/ Be it known that I, IsAAc BAsHoRE, a citizen of the United States, of Valla Walla, in the county of lValla Walla and Territory of Vashington, have invented a certain new and useful Automatic Artificial Finger, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my invention is to supply defective or maimed hands with artificial fingers.
My invention consists in ajointed artificial finger attached to a hand-socket, and made to adj ustabl y open or close by a series of arms, levers, a ratchet and dog, all operated by a rock-shaft in the hand-socket, the said rockshaft being actuated by a short Working ring or socket attached to the hand-socket, and adapted to engage with the stub of any remaining finger or the thumb of the same hand, or with a Whole finger or thumb.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the finger and hand-socket. Fig. 2 is a plan View ofthe hand and working sockets and the nger. Fig. 3 is aback view showing clearly the rock-shaft and the manner of operating Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the handsocket and the nger, showing the mechanism inclosed in the latter.

X represents the hand-socket; B, the working socket or ring for the stub of the thumb or finger remaining on the hand, and Y the artificial finger. The socket B is pivotally attached to the socket X by a link, T. On the other side is an arm, C, to which is pivoted a lever, A, extending to one end of the rock-shaft D, supported within the handsocket by cleats a a. The jointed finger Y is attached to the hand-socket by T- headed guides F F, which have free play in slot E, made in the end of socket X. As the shaft D rocks, a toggle-joint or lever, H I K, actuates a ratchet, L,.in connection with which there is a pivoted dog,4N. (See Fig. 4L.) The moving ratchet lifts a lever, G,.pivoted to its extension, and an eye, t, in the socket X, said lever passing through a narrow slot in the latter. As the second joint is flexed, a transverse pin, P, operates a lever, O, pivoted to a V shaped piece, R, riveted at S S to the third joint. Thus the movement ofthe second joint operates the third correspondingly, as the case may be.
Although but one artificial finger is shown, it is evident that more can be attached to the hand-socket, and be easily operated by the rock-shaft D and socket B.
The special purpose of the ratchet and dog is to lock the finger in any desired position until released by the further movement of the rock-shaft, which is of great importance practically.
All the joints are made in a suitable form tolt close together and Work easily, and the hand-socket and finger or fingers may be made to suit individual requirements.
The operation of the device is briefiy as follows: The tlnger or stub remaining on the hand is placed in the socket B, and the handsocket fitted to the hand. Then by opening or closing the hand naturally, the metal or artificial finger is correspondingly opened or closed-that is, by bringing the socket B to- Ward the palm of the hand the rock-shaft raises all the levers in the artificial linger, and causes it to close, the ratchet and dog holding it in the desired position. By an opposite movement of socket B the said 1evers are made to drop and the finger opens.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
and its rock-shaft, of the working-socket adapted to t over a remaining member of the hand and operate said shaft, and thejointed artificial iinger having internal vmechanism, substantially as described, whereby said finger is adjustably opened or closed by the operating of the Working-socket and rockshaft, as set forth.
2.- In the artificial finger operated from Without, substantially as described, the com-` bination, with the toggle-lever, of the ratchet and dog, a lever extending from the ratchet to the hand-socket, and a lever attached to the second joint, adapted to bend the third joint by the moving of the second, as sety forth. 3. The working-socket B, having links T O and lever A, combined with the hand-socket X, having rock-shaft D, the jointed artificial linger Y, having the guides F F, the togglelever III K, the ratchet and dog L N, the lever G, the pin P in the second joint, the lever O, and the piece R, riveted to the third joint at S S, as set forth.
