Description
(N6 Model.)
I v R. OTTO. DEVICE FOR SECURING LIDS T0 BURIAL GASKETS. No. 322,471. I Patented July 21, 1885.
Arm/mm UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT OTTO, OF OWEGO, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR SECURING LIDS TO BURIAL -CASKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 322,471, dated July 21, 1885.
Application filed May 9. 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT OTTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owego, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Lids to Burial-Caskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements for securing lids to burial-cases, and for other purposes; and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and at the same time effective device whereby the securing of a lid ,to a OOffil], casket, or like article is quickly and easily accomplished without the loss of time and difficulty experienced in the devices heretofore practiced.
The invention consists in a shank provided with a suitable head, having a portion of its body cut away to form a hook or shoulder, in combination with a spring-catch adapted to be secured in a slot cut in the inner side of a casket or like article, whereby the lid is rigidly secured to the same when said shank is inserted through a perforation in the lid and a corresponding perforation in the edge of the casket and engages with the spring-catch, as will be more fully hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specificaton, Figure 1 illustrates a perspective View of a portion of the body and lid of a burial-casket, partly broken away, showing my improved fastening device; Fig. 2, a vertical cross-section, and Fig. 3 a view of the hooked shank.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
tion of the shank.
spring-catch, d. Perforations E, made in the edge of thebody A, communicate with each of the said catches, and corresponding perforations, F, are made in the lid B for the recep- These recessed catches are placed at suitable intervals in the inner surface of the body A, and in order to properly secure the lid the hooked shank is inserted through the respective perforations and made to engage with the spring-catches.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The pointed barbed shank provided with a suitable head, in combination with a spring 'located in a slot made in the inner side of the coflin, whereby the hooked end of said shank is adapted to engage with said spring and be rota-ted out of contact therewith, as shown and described, to operate as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT OTTO.
