Description
Jan. 4, 1966 R. F. DlcKEY HAND GUN HOLSTER Filed March 16. 1964 INVENTOR /Pqy /C /O/e] A from/Ev United States Patent() 3,227,336 HAND GUN HOLSTER Roy F. Dickey, 5400 Skiles, Kansas City, Mo. Filed Mar. 16, 1964, Ser. No. 351,961 2 Claims. (Cl. 224-2) This invention relates to holsters of the type used for carrying pistols and revolvers. It has particular reference to that type of holster in which the gun and holster is' supported by the belt or trouser waistband of the wearer.
One object of my invention is to provide a novel and improved holster which is simple of design, easily and inexpensively constructed, light in weight, and compact and inconspicuous when worn.
A further object is to provide a holster adapted for use by rightor left-hand shooters and which can be carried in either of two semiconcealed front positions or one of two fully concealed rear positions.
My invention is particularly designed for detectives or other peace ocers who must wear a hand weapon under a coat rather than exposed to view.
Further objects are to design such a holster which can be put on or taken off without removing the wearers belt or disarranging the clothing and which, while in place, permits the weapon to be easily and quickly withdrawn.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings in which similai numerals refer to similar parts throughout the views. p
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only:
FIGURE 1 is an illustrative view showing one adaptation of my invention and the manner in which it is used.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the device with portions cut away.
FIGURE 3 is a plan View, partly cut away.
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view along the line 4-4 of FIGURE 3.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of a blank from which a modified form of my invention is formed.
FIGURE 6 is a perspective View of the blank of FIG- URE 5, formed into shape.
As shown in the drawings, numeral 11 designates a holster embodying my invention. Holster 11 comprises a strap 12, an S-shaped belt hook or clip 13, a cylindrical, barrel receiving loop 14 and a shield or guard 15. Belt hook 13 is preferably made -of metal although it may be of a similar semitlexible material. Strap 12, loop 14 and shield 15 are preferably made of leather, but may be of a similar material. Strap 12 may be formed of two layers or plies 16 and 17 which are glued or stitched together after hook 13 is inserted through slot 18 in ply 16 adjacent its upper end.
To utilize the holster it is inserted between the trouser band and the body of the wearer and moved downward until belt hook 13 fully engages belt 20 and loop 14 is inside the trousers and suspended downward below the 3,227,336 Patented Jan. 4, 1966 belt so that shield 15 rests against the shirt or inner garment of the wearer. The hand gun may then be placed in the holster by inserting the barrel of the gun into loop 14 until further downward movement is arrested by either the trigger guard or enlarged portion of the barrel coming in contact with the upper rim of loop 14. The purpose of shield 15 is to protect the garments of the wearer from the oil of the weapon and to shield the weapon from the moisture of the body. It also guards the weapon against entanglement amongst the garments. The widened upper portion of shield 15 is so designed as to function as a shield whether the gun is inserted with the handle to the right or to the left.
To remove the holster it is merely lifted upward so that hook 13 disengages from the belt or waistband.
The holster is designed so as to be worn in the waistband on the right front side, on the left front side, at the right rear or in the left rear. It will be noted that it thus permits a right-hand front draw or a left-hand cross draw from the iirst position; a left-hand front draw or right-hand cross draw from the second position; a right-hand rear draw from the third position or a lefthand rear draw from the fourth position.
If it is desired to further lighten the holster and to make it even less conspicuous it may be worn without shield 15 which may be unsnapped and laid aside.
In a modified embodiment of my invention illustrated in FIGURES 5 and 6 of the drawings, the barrel-receiving loop and the hook-receiving ply of the strap are formed of one single L-shaped piece of leather 21. A horizontal slot 22 is cut into vertical arm 23 of the L to receive belt hook 13 and the horizontal arm 24 is 4 wrapped around vertical arm 23 and riveted or stitched in position so as to form the barrel-receiving loop.
While I have shown and described herein specific embodiments of my invention, it is to .be understood that any change or changes in the forms of and in relative arrangements of components can be made within the scope of the invention, as defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having fully disclosed my invention, I claim:
1. A hand gun holster comprising a rectangular leather strap adapted to be vertically positioned between the waistband of the trousers and the body of the wearer, a downward depending metal hook secured to one face of the strap at the upper end thereof and adapted to engage the belt or waistband, a vertical, cylindrical gun barrelreceiving, leather loop, secured to the opposite face of said strap adjacent the lower end thereof and a ilexible guard attached to the outer surface of said loop, said guard being formed of a fiat piece of material having its bottom edge attached to the outside of said loop which constitutes its sole support whereby the gun may be suppored in the loop and the gun guarded while the gun is oriented for either a right-hand or left-hand draw, said cylindrical loop extending less than one-half the length of said strap.
2. A hand gun holster comprising a strap, a downward depending hook secured to one face of said strap adjacent the upward end thereof and a vertical, open top and bottom, cylindrical, gun barrel-receiving loop secured to the opposite face of said strap at the lower end thereof, said barrel-receiving loop having a length less than the length of `a conventional hand gun barrel, said loop opening being slightly greater in diameter than the diameter of the gun barrel, said loop receiving only the 3 Y said barrel and being the bnly support on the strap fo 1,427,849 the gun whereby the'gunmay be supported in the left- 1928,063 hand or right-hand draw position. 2,609,979 3,118,580
