I. FRANZ.
SNOW PLOW.
Patented Aug. 4, 1885.
WITNESSES: I W2; fimm ATTORNEYS-.

UNITED STATES JULIUS FRANZ, OF XVARSAYV, ILLINOIS.
SNOW-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,656, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed April 29, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS FRANZ, of Warsaw, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvcment in Snow-Flows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The objectof my invention is to provide a new and improved hand snow-plow for making paths in snow, and which plow is so constructed that it can be adjusted to make paths of different widths.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figurel is a longitudinal sectional eleva tion of my improved snow-plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The frame A, provided with a straight bottom piece or runner, B, has an inclined top,
0, which is extended upward and toward the rear to form the handlerod D, having the cross-piece E.
To the front end of the runner B the share F is securecl,\vl1ich is made of hard wood, and is inclined equally from its upright middle line to the sides and rear, and has its front edge inc-lined, as shown. The front edge is covered with sheet iron or steel. An iron or steel runner, H, is secured on the bottom edge of the runner B.
A wing, J, is hinged to each side edge of the share F in such a manner that it can swing to and from the "frame A. Iron orstcel runners are secured to their bottom edges. At their upper edges the wings J have outwardly and upwardly inclined flanges J.
A brace, K, is pivoted to the inner side of each wing, which braces have apertures L. The braces are crossed, and a pin, M, passed through a clip, N, 011 the runner and through the apertures in the braces into the top of 5 the runner B, to hold the wings at the desired inclination, according to the width of thepath desired.
if desired, the wings may be fixed and permanent braces used in place of the adjustable braces shown.
The plow is pushed through the snow, and the wings J force the snow to both sides. The flanges J prevent the snow from passing over the top edges of the wings into theinside of the plow, and throw the same back so far that it cannot slide back into the furrow made by the plow.
If desired, the plow can be adjusted so that only one wing operates in removing the snow.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a snow-plow, the middle runner, B, the inclined piece G, secured thereto and extended to form a handle, D, the share F, secured in front of the middle runner, the wings J, hinged to the share on opposite sides of said middle runner, and the braces K, hinged to the inner sides of the wings and adj ustably connected to the upper side of the middle runner, B, thereby relieving the haudle of strain, substantially as setforth.
2. A snow-plow consisting of the middle runner, B, havinga clip, N, on its upper side provided with a screw, M, the share F, the wings J, hinged to the share on opposite sides of middle runner and provided with flanges J, projecting outward at an angle to said wings, the braces K, hinged to the inner sides of the wings and having apertures for screw M to engage, and the inclined piece O,secured to the middle runner and extended rearward to form a handle, D, substantially as set forth.
JULIUS FRANZ.
