1o claims. (Cl. 20s- 56) The present invention is a `continuation application of my co-pending application Serial No. 788,229, entitled Photo Corner and Method of Making the Same led January 21, 1959, now abandoned.

The present invention relates to photo corners and to a method of producing the same. More particularly, the invention relates to photo corners, a number of which are combined to form a band or strip, and to a simple and economical method -of making such strips.

The individual photo corner according to the invention consists substantially of the same structure as similar photo corners already known, namely, of a small base sheet, a triangular pocket of a thin, perforated transparent material which is folded around the edges of one corner of the base sheet toward the rear side thereof toI which it is secured, and of a thin backing which is secured to and covers up the rear side of the 1base sheet as well as the rear, folded-over parts of the material forming the pocket, which backing is provided on its rear outer side with a self-sticking adhesive and with a protective sheet covering the later which may be easily pulled off to expose the adhesive and may also combine a number of such photo corners to for-m a strip. As disclosed in my copending applications Serial No. 510,196, tiled May 23, 1955, now abandoned, and the divisional application Serial No. 631,010, now U.S. Patent 3,023,678, in order to facilitate the separation of the photo corner from the cover sheet, this rear cover piece or cover strip has in previous photo corners usually been made wider than the photo corner itself, and for the same purpose the lower end of the backing of each photo corner has also often been provided with a short extension which is not covered with adhesive. Obviously, such an uncoated extension does nothing to improve the adherence of the photo corner in an album or the like, ibut rather tends to loosen the same therefrom.

According to the present invention, it has been found that such a wide covering of the photo corners and also such a wide backing with uncoated extensions thereon constitute an unnecessary waste of material, and also that the operation of cutting out these extensions constitutes unnecessary work, all of which unnecessarily increases the cost of manufacture of such photo corners and thus also the purchase price thereof.

It is an object of the present invention to avoid these disadvantages of the known photo 'corners and of the known method of their manufacture.

A further object of the invention is to provide photo corners of the general shape as previously known and above described having a carrier or cover strip supporting a series of photo corners and covering the adhesive backing thereof before they are used, which strip coincides with the contours of the series of photo corners which, although immediately 'adjacent to each other may be either cut oif completely from each other or be perforated between adjacent photo corners so as to be easily severed from each other.

Except for the tips of the photo corners around which the foil pieces are folded to form the pockets, there are thus no cutouts made of any material which would be lost, and there is also no need for making either the covering strip carrying the photo corners or the backing ICC strip wider than the adhesive-coated part of the latter. Considering that photo corners are mass-produced articles, it will be evident th'at a considerable amount of material may thus be saved. The individual photo corners may be easily removed from the carrier strip by bending the latter or they may be separated from the carrier strip by a label dispenser or by a container Vfor the photo corner strip which is provided with a ,slot through which the strip may be withdrawn toward the outside. For an easy removal of the photo corners from the cover strip or vice versa, there is also no need to divide the strip by a slit therein which would require the cover sheet to be removed in two separateY parts, but the cover sheet may lbe easily removed in one piece which consid.- erably facilitates the use of the photo corners. The cover strip carrying the photo corners may also -be made of a width and shape in accordance with the width and shape of two adjacent rows of photo corners which abut along their edges opposite to the pocket parts and are severed from each other at the longitudinal center between the two rows.

The method of producing the photo corners according to the invention on a common carrier strip may be carried out in a manner known as such for combining continuous strips by applying upon the carrier strip another strip of the same width which subsequently forms the backing sheets of the individual photo corners and is coated with a self-sticking adhesive, and by then notching out this double-layer strip along one longitudinal edge if it is of a single photo-corner width, or along both longitudinal edges if it is of a double width to form the' corners for the pockets. Thereupon a second strip of the same size and shape upon which the pocket parts are previously secured. is glued upon the double-layer strip so that the notched portions of sboth strips accurately coincide with each other, whereupon .finally the individual photo corners are cut to the surface of the cover strip, leaving the same intact, and are thus either cut off completely from each other or are at least perforated at the dividing lines to such an extent as to -be easily severed from each other. v

Further objects, features, and advantages of the present invention will appear from the following detailed description, particularly when read with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which FIGURE 1 shows a front View of a photo corner produced according to the new method;

FIGURE 2 shows a rear view of the base sheet with the pocket portion thereon after the latter has been foldedr around and secured to the ibase sheet;

Referring to the drawings, the photo corner consistsv essentially of the same elements as other photo corners such 'as were previously known, namely, of a base sheet 1 of paper or the like, `one corner of which is covered at its front side by Va thin foil 2 lof a transparent material Patented June` 21 1966 or paper or the like which is folded around the edges of the mentioned corner and upon the rear side thereof where the triangular end pieces 2 Iare glued to the base sheet 1 by a coating of adhesive 3 so that the foil piece 2 .will form a pocket. The rear side of base sheet 1 and .the folded-over parts Z of foil 12 are covered by a backing 4 of paper which is glued to these parts by a coating `of adhesive 5. This backing 4 is provided on its entire rear surface with a layer `6 of a self-sticking adhesive which, in turn, is covered by a protective strip 7.

As illustrated diagrammatically in FIGURE 6, the inventive method of producing the photo corners according to FIGURES 1 to 5 consists in rst providing a carrying or cover strip 7b of a width equal to the depth or height of the linished photo corner, and in then applying a backing strip 4b thereon which has the same width 'as cover strip 7b and is coated at -the side facing toward strip 7b with a layer of -a self-sticking adhesive. The cover strip 7b is adapted to be easily pulled off the layer 6 of self-sticking adhesive on the backing strip 4b by consisting entirely of Ia suitable material or by being suitably treated on its surface. This may also consist of a paper which is especially treated for this purpose. After the double-layer strip 4b, 7b is thus formed, one longi- -tudinal edge portion thereof is notched out so .as to form a serrated edge lwith lthe remaining corner portions 7 being spaced apart at their bases at' a distance corresponding to the final width of the photo corners.

A second strip `1b of the same width as strips 4b and 7b is then notched out along one of its longitudinal edges to form corner por-tions 1 exactly corresponding to corner portions 7 on the double-layer strip 4b, 7b. This may -be done by a separate stamping operation or Iby the same operation in which the corner portions 7" are stamped out of the double strip 4b, 7b. One side of strip 1b is then covered -with a narrow strip 2b which may consist of a -foil of transparent or other suitable material of a width corresponding to the height of the pocket portions 2 of the photo corners. After being applied upon strip 1b, this narrow strip 2b is provided with transverse cutouts 2a at equal distance from each other. The trifangular portions 2 of each foil piece which project .laterally over the corner portions i1 of strip `1b are then folded around the edges or corner portions 1" and upon the rear side of the latter to which they Iare then secured, for example, yby a coating of adhesive which is applied to the rear side of strip 1b either before or after the same is notched out. After .being thus prepared, strip 1b 'with the pockets 2 thereon is glued together with the double-layer strip 4b, 7b in such a manner lthat the entire rear side of strip 1b including the triangular portions 2 of pockets 2 will be securely glued to the side of strip 4b which is opposite to the side which is covered by strip 7b, and so that the corner portions 7 of strip 7b will exactly coincide 'with the corner portions 1" of the strip 1b.-

Thereafter; the individual photo corners 9 will be separatedfrom each Vother between the adjacent corner portions 7" by cuts 10 which penetrate through strips 1b and 4b, but not through the carrier or cover strip 7b. Naturally, particularly if the photo corners are to be packed in small boxes, cuts 10 may also penetrate partly or entirely through strip 7b after every second or fourth photo corner so that, immediately or after cover strip 7b has been severed completely, the photo corners will be available in pairs or in strips of four corners each. The individual photo corners may then be easily removed by bending the cover or carrier strip 7b, as illustrated in FIGURE 6a.

FIGURE 7 illustrates the same method as above described for producing two adjacent rows of photo corners on the same cover strip 7b, facing each other along their wide edges opposite to pockets 2. In this case, the cover strip 7b, as well as strips 4b and 1b are made of twice the width as those shown in FIGURE 6, and strips 4b and 1b are each cut apart along ltheir longitudinal center.

Both longitudinal edge portionsof stri'ps 7b, 4b, and .1b are notched out to for-m opposite corner portions 7", and two separate foil strips 2b Iare applied to the corner portions l. at each side. All of the operations as described above with relation to FIGURE 6 are Ithus duplicated and carried out on both longitudinal edge portions of the strips.

The individual photo corners of such a strip are likewise out lapart transversely of the strip either completely or at least to such an extent that they may be easily separated from each other when they -are to be used. These cuts 'lil may be provided in cover strip 7b after every pair -or every second pair of photo corners facing each other at their bottom edgesso that either two or four photo edges `will be removed each time from the cover strip 7b. These two or four photo edges may Ibe easily removed from the cover-strip portion 7b by -bending the latter, as shown in FIGURE 7a. If desired, 4cover strip 7b may also be cut longitudinally along its cen-ter so as to produce two photo corner strips as shown in FIGURE 6, or theyV may be perforated along the longitudinal center line and cut off in suitable lengths, and the two rows of each length then be folded over back-to-back so that the photo corners of each pair extending transversely of the strip will then .be flatly superimposed upon each other.

I claim:

1. A photo-corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners, comprising at least two adjacent photo corners each including a base sheet having a width corresponding substantially only to the height of the photo corner and provided with cut-out portions along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rear side of said base sheet, a backing cove-ring secured to the exposed rear side of said base sheet and the folded-over parts of said pocket means, said backing have substantially the same size and shape as said base sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a self-sticking adhesive, and a protective carrier strip covering Ithe coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, the base sheet and backing of a respective photo corner being of shape and size corresponding respectively to only a single4 individual one of said photo corners, and said protective strip extending substantially uninterruptedly over at least two adjacent photo corners and being of size and shape substantially exactly corresponding to the size and shape of the photo corners over which it extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners may be easily removed from said protective carrier strip by bending the protective carrier strip.

2. A photo-corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners, cornprising at least two adjacent photo co-rners each including a base sheet having a Width corresponding substantially only to the height of the photo corner and provided with cut-out portions along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rea-r side of said base sheet, a backing covering secured to the exposed rear side of said base sheet and the folded-over parts of said pocket means, said backing having substantially the same size and shape as said base sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a self-sticking adhesive, and a protective carrier strip covering the coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, each photo corner being dened by a substantially straight line along the edge opposite said cut-out portions and by substantially straight lines joining said last-mentioned edge with said cut-out portions, said protective strip extending substantially uninterruptedly overv at least two adjacent photo corners 'and being of size and shape substantially exactly corresponding to the size 4and shape of the photo corners over which it extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners may be easily removed from said protective carrier strip by bending the protective carrier st-rip.

3. A photo-corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners, comprising at least two adjacent photo corners each including a base sheet having a width corresponding substantially only to the height of the photo comer and provided with cut-out portions along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rear side of said base sheet, a backing covering secured to the exposed rear side of said base sheet and the folded-over parts of said pocket means, said backing having substantially the same size and shape as said base sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a sal-sticking adhesive, and a p-rotective carrier strip covering the coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, the base sheet and backing of a respective photo corner having substantially straight lines along at least three sides defining the contours thereof, and said protective strip extending substantially uninterruptedly over at least two adjacent photo corners and being of size and shape substantially exactly corresponding to the size and shape of the photo corners over which it extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners may be easily removed from said protective carrier strip by bending the protective carrier strip.

4. A photo-corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners disposed alongside each other, comprising a base sheet having a Width corresponding substantially only to the height of an integral number of photo corners and provided with cut-out portions at least along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rear side of said base sheet, a backing covering secured to the exposed rear side of said base sheet and the folded-over parts of said lpocket means, said backing having substantially the same size and shape as said base sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a self-sticking adhesive, and a protective carrier strip covering the coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, and said protective carrier strip extending substantially uninterruptedly over vat least two adjacent photo corners and being of size and shape substantially exactly corresponding -to the size and shape of the photo corners over which itl extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners may be easily removed from said protective carrier strip by bending the protective carrier strip.

5. A photo-corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners disposed base to base with respect to eachv other, comprising a base sheet having a width corresponding substantially only to the height of an integral number of photo corners and provided with cut-out portions at least along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rear side of said base sheet, a backing covering secured to the exposed rear side of said base sheet and the folded-over parts of said pocket means, said backing having substantially the same size and shape as said base sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a self-sticking adhesive, and a protective carrier strip covering the coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, said protective carrier strip extending substantially uninterruptedly over atleast two adjacent photo corners and being of size and shape substantially exactly cor-responding to the size and shape of the photo corners over which it extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners may be easily removed from said protective carrier strip by bending the protective carrier strip.

6. A photo-corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners, comprising at least two adjacent photo corners each including a base sheet having a width corresponding substantially only to the height of the photo corner and provided with cut-out portions along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rear side of said Vbase sheet, a backing covering secured to the exposed rear side of said base sheet and the foldedover` parts of said pocket means, said backing having substantially same same size and shape as said base sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a self-sticking adhesive, and a protective carrier strip covering the coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, said protective stri-p extending substantially uninterruptedly over at least two adjacent photo corners and beingA of size and shape substantially exactly corresponding to the size and 'shape of the photo corners over which it extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners mayV be easily removed from said protective carrier strip by beind the protective carrier strip.

7. A photo-corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners, comprising at least two adjacent photo corners each including a base sheet having a width corresponding substantially only to the height'of the photo corner and provided with cut-out portions along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rear side of said base sheet, a backing covering secured to the exposed rear side of said base sheet and the foldedover parts of said pocket means, said backing having substantially the same size and shape as said base sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a self-sticking adhesive, and a protective carrier strip covering the coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, the contours of said base sheet and backing being defined by boundary lines only the base sheet and the backing of adjacent photo corners being completely separated from each other along contiguous boundary lines thereof, said protective strip extending substantially uninterruptedly over at least two adjacent lphoto corners and being of size and shaped substantially exactly corresponding to the size and shape of the photo corners over which it extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners may be easily removed from said protective carrier strip by binding the protective carrier strip.

`8. A photo-corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners, comprising at least two adjacent photo corners each including a Ibase sheet having a width corresponding substantially only to the height of the photo corner and provided with cut-out portions along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rear side of said base sheet, a backing covering secured to thel exposed rear side of said base sheet and the folded-over parts of said pocket means, said backing having substantially the same size and, shape as said base Y sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a self-sticking adhesive, and aprotective carrier strip covering the coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive. the contours of said base sheet and backing being defined by boundary lines, only the base sheet and the backing of adjacent photo corners being completely separated from each other along contiguous boundary lines thereof while at least some of the contiguous boundary lines of adjacent photo corners have the protective strip thereof at least partially cut to facilitate severence thereof, and said protective strip extending substantially uninterruptedly over at least two adjacent photo corners and being of size and shape substantially exactly corresponding to the size and shape of the photo corners over which it extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners may be easily removed ifrom said protective carrier strip by bending the protective carrier strip.

9. A photo corner arrangement with pockets composed of at least two adjacent individual photo corners disposed base to base with respect to each other, comprising a base sheet having a width corresponding substantially only to the height of an integral number of photo corners and provided with cut-out portions at least along one longitudinal edge thereof to form corners for the pockets, pocket means constituted by foil portions disposed in front of said base sheet, folded around the edges of said corners and secured to the rear side of said base sheet, a backing covering secured to the exposed rear side of said base sheet and the folded-over parts of said pocket means, said backing having substantially the same size and shape as said base sheet and being provided on the rear side thereof with a coating of a self-sticking adhesive, and a protective carrier strip covering the coated side of said backing and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, the contours of said base sheet and backing being defined by boundary lines, only the base sheet and the backing of each photo corner being completely severed from the base sheet and backing of adjoining photo corners, said protective carrier strip extending substantially uninterruptedly over at least two adjacent photo corners and being of size and shape substantially exactly corresponding to the size and shape of the photo corners over which it extends uninterruptedly whereby the individual photo corners may be easily removed from said protective carrier strip by bending the protective carrier strip, and said protective strip being at least partially cut also along the boundary line between adjacent bases of said photo corners.

10. A band of photo corners provided in two rows,

said band comprising a base sheet having pockets at a front side thereof along opposite edges of said band, each pocket consisting of foil portions folded around the edges of corners of said base sheet and secured to the rear side thereof, a backing sheet covering and relatively permanently secured to the rear side of said base sheet and to the folded-over parts of said foil portions`thereon, said backing sheet having on its rear side a coating of self-sticking adhesive, and a protective strip covering said coated side of said backing sheet and being removably connected thereto by said adhesive, said protective strip extending substantially uninterruptedly over at least two adjacent photo corners and thereby combining a plurality of said photo corners to form a band having two longitudinally extending rows of corners, said photo corners being immediately adjacent to each other but having their respective base sheet portions and backing sheet portions substantially severed from each other on said protective strip along straight parallel side lines and along a straight line extending centrally and longitudinally of said protective strip, each of said base sheet, said backing sheet and said protective strip having coinciding longitudinal edges which are toothed to form a plurality of rectangular corners at which the respective pockets are provided, the straight lines of severance of each pair of corners on opposite sides of said longitudinally extending line of severance being coincident.

A PHOTO-CORNER ARRANGEMENT WITH POCKETS COMPOSED OF AT LEAST TWO ADJACENT INDIVIDUAL PHOTO CORNERS, COMPRISING AT LEAST TWO ADJACENT PHOTO CORNERS EACH INCLUDING A BASE SHEET HAVING A WIDTH CORRESPONDING SUBSTANTIALLY ONLY TO THE HEIGHT OF THE PHOTO CORNER AND PROVIDED WITH CUT-OUT PORTIONS ALONG ONE LONGITUDINAL EDGE THEREOF TO FORM CORNERS FOR THE POCKETS, POCKET MEANS CONSTITUTED BY FOIL PORTIONS DISPOSED IN SAID CORNERS AND SECURED TO FOLDED AROUND THE EDGES OF SAID CORNERS AND SECURED TO THE REAR SIDE OF SAID BASE SHEET, A BACKING COVERING SECURED TO THE EXPOSED REAR SIDE OF SAID BASE SHEET AND THE FOLDED-OVER PARTS OF SAID POCKET MEANS, SAID BACKING HAVE SUBSTANTIALLY THE SAME SIZE AND SHAPE AS SAID BASE SHEET AND BEING PROVIDED ON THE REAR SIDE THEROF WITH A COATING OF A SELF-STICKING ADHESIVE, AND A PROTECTIVE CARRIE STRIP COVERING THE COATED SIDE OF SAID BACKING AND BEING REMOVABLY CONNECTED THERETO BY SAID ADHESIVE, THE BASE SHEET AND BACKING OF A RESPECTIVE PHOTO CORNER BEING OF SHAPE AND SIZE CORRRESPONDING RESPECTIVELY TO ONLY A SINGLE INDIVIDUAL ONE OF SAID PHOTO CORNERS, AND SAID PROTECTIVE STRIP EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY UNINTERRUPTEDLY OVER AT LEAST TWO ADJACENT PHOTO CORNERS AND BEING OF SIZE AND SHAPE SUBSTANTIALLY EXACTLY CORRESPONDING TO THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE PHOTO CORNERS OVER WHICH IT EXTENDS UNINTERRUPTEDLY WHEREBY THE INDIVIDUAL PHOTO CORNERS MAY BE EASILY REMOVED FROM SAID PROTECTIVE CARRIER STRIP BY BENDING THE PROTECTIVE CARRIER STRIP.
