UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY P. DREW, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
COCK FOR GAS, STEAM, 800., FITTINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,824, dated September 8, 1885. Application filedFebruary 29, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY PHILIP DREW, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cocks for Gas, Steam, and Water Fittings, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of one of my improved cocks. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the thumb'piece. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the plug. Fig. 5 is a bottom'view of the screw-cap plug. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of one of my improved cocks, shown as having a bent arm connected with it. Fig. 7 is'a side elevation of one of my improved cocks, shown as applied to a drop-light. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of one of my improved cocks, shown as applied to a swing-bracket. Fig. 9 is a sectional side elevation of the nozzle. Fig. 10 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with the nozzle R in position.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the cocks for which Letters Patent No. 311,650 were issued to me February 3, 1885, in such a manner as to make them more convenient in use and less liable to break or otherwise get out of order.
The invention consists in the combination, with the stock and downwardly-tapered plug described in Patent No. 311,650, of a nozzle and a thumb-piece having a stop projection cast solid thereon, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.
A is the stock of the cock, which has a per foration, A, formed longitudinally through it for the passage of the gas, steam, or liquid. The stock A has a female screw formed in its rear end to receive the end of a gas, steam, or water pipe, B, as shown in Figs. 1, 6, and 8; or its rear end may be closed, as shown in Fig. 7. The latter construction adapts the cock for use with a drop-light.
The forward end of the stock A may be provided with an arm, 0, to carry a burner, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, or with the joint D of a swing-bracket, as shown in Fig. 8, or may be closed, as shown in Fig. 7, or may be provided with a nozzle.
Through the stock A is formed a perforation, E, to receive the plug F, which perforation is made tapering and with its smaller end downward, as shown in Fig. 1.
Upon the smaller end of the plug F is formed a male screw, G, to screw into a screw-hole, H, in the stem of the thumb-piece I.
Upon the stem of the thumb-piece I is cast a projection, K, to strike against the shoulders L, formed upon the lower side of the stock A, and limit the rotary movement of the plug F and thumb-piece I. With this construction the thumb-piece I receives all the strain, and the plug F would not be injured should the project-ion K' be broken off or the said thumbpiece I be otherwise broken.
The larger or upper end of the plugFhas a recess, M, formed in it, from which a perforation, N, leads out through the rear side of the plug F, and is adapted to register with the perforation A of the stock A. In the inner surface of the recess M is formed a screw-thread to receive a screw to serve as a wrench for screwing the screw G of the said plug into the screw-hole H of the thumb'piece I, and thus make it possible to use a thumb-piece, I, having a stop projection, K, cast solid upon it.
In the upper part of the stock A, at the forward side of the perforation E, is -formed a recess, 0. The recess M of the plug F serves as a seat for the lower end of the spiral spring P, and the said recess is made of such a depth as will-allow the said spring I? to have such a length as will give it the necessary elasticity. The upper end of the spring I? rests against the lower end of the cap-plug Q, that closes the upper end of the perforation E or of the nozzle R, screwed into the upper end of the said perforation E.
The nozzle R is used when it is desired to attach a burner to the cock, and thus have a center light. 1
The lower end of the plug Q ornozzle R can be recessed to receive the upper end ofthe spring 1?, and thus allow the said spring to have additional length. Space should be left between the adjacent ends of the plug F and the cap-plug Q or nozzle R to allow the gas, steam, or liquid to enter the recess 0; or a recess, S, should be formed in one or the other of the said ends, or partly in one end and partly in the other, for the passage of the gas, steam, or liquid.
Having thus fully described I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a cock for gas, steam, and water fittings, the combination, with the stock A, having a longitudinal perforation, A, a downwardlytapering perforation, E, and a recess, 0, in the front wall of the said perforation E, the downwardly-tapering plug F, having a recess, M, opening into the upper part of the perforation my invent-ion,
scribed.
