(Cl. 116119) This invention relates to a book marker designed primarily for books with two printed columns on each page and consists of a thin sheet, preferably of clear transparent plastic material which carries a hand simulating a clock hand, pivoted in a vertical slot occupying a central position on the transparent sheet. This pivoted element is movable up and down within the slot, and the slot is of sufiicient length to permit the point of the hand to occupy any position on the transparent sheet and hence on the page.

An important object of the present invention is to provide a convenient book marker which is especially convenient for Bible readers, wherein the printing is arranged in two columns and the type is uncomfortably small. It is desirable for the reader to be able to resume reading at the precise line and verse where he left off reading on the previous occasion, so as to avoid losing the trend of thought, and in accordance with the present invention the thin transparent plastic is of a size to fit the page and when the period of reading is over the transparent sheet will be laid over the particular page, right or left, with the side of the sheet having he indicating hand, uppermost, and the hand rotated to point to the precise location for the next reading. In most instances, this will require a shifting of the pivot element as well which is readily accomplished.

The book marker of the present invention includes a rectangular sheet of clear transparent plastic material shown at and is of a size to completely overlay the page with only a small margin around the three free edges. In actual practice, this sheet can be made slightly oversize with relation to the average book page and the sheet then cut down to the precise size of the pages of the book on which it is being used.

A narrow central vertical slot 11 is formed in the transparent sheet by die cutting or any other means, the slot extending a substantial distance towards the upper and lower edges of the sheet without causing any undue weakening of the sheet.

A metallic indicating hand12 has a point at its outer or free end and an opening 14 adjacent its opposite end 3,265,456 Patented August 16, 1966 which receives a pivot element 15 having a head 16 at each end and carrying a washer 18 at its lower end. This pivot element may take the form of a metallic grommet and when originally inserted, enough pressure is employed in bending it up to insure a snug fit while at the same time allowing the pivot element to move up and down in the slot with rearward freedom. The advantage in using a headed metallic element of this acharacter is that when the parts through use become a bit too loose the head can be tapped with a hammer and the parts are again tightened.

FIG. 1 shows the line marker of the present invention overlying the right hand page 20 of a book 21, the pages of which have two columns. The use of the device will be perfectly apparent from this illustration in the drawmg.

While there have been described herein what are at present considered preferred embodiments of the invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that many modifications and changes may be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention. It is therefore to be understood that the exemplary embodiments are illustrative and not restrictive of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claim, and that all modifications that come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claim are intended to be included therein.

What I claim is:

A line marker for the pages of a book having at least two columns and including a sheet of clear transparent plastic material of a width and height not larger than the pages of the book and having a centrally disposed vertical slot extending over a substantial portion of its height, and a pointer element in the nature of a clock hand with a point at one end and having a hole at its opposite end, a headed pivot element passing through said hole and through said slot and provided with a washer at the lower end of the pivot element underlying the transparent sheet to mount the pointerrelement in sliding and rotative relation within the slot in the sheet to permit the pointer to be moved to various positions so that the point can be located in any area of the sheet.
