PAPER BOX.
SPECTFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,134,1ated October 27, 1885.
Application filed August 3l, 1885. Serial No 175,745. (No model.) v l T 0 @ZZ whom, it 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, RoBERT BRoTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of paper boxes which are intended l'orthe reception ot' a pack of cards, a plug of tobacco, or other con tents which completely fill the box, the object ofmy invention being to so constructsuch a box that the contents can be readily removed without overturning and shaking the box, as usual. This object l attain in the manner which l will now proceed to describe, reference being. had to the accompanying drawiugs,inwhich- Figure l is a perspective Yview of my improved box, showing how the contents of the same can be grasped in order to withdraw them; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the box, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the box, showing modifications of my invention.
'lhe box, so far as regards its general structure, is similar to boxes now made, and comprises the bottom a, front and rear sides, b b, opposite ends d d, and top f, with tuck-flap g, the whole being preferably made from a single blank scored, folded, and pasted in the ordinary manner. Such boxes usually have a thumb-notch cut in the upper edge of the front side, b,- but this thumb-notch is of little avail, as the nger cannot be inserted between the rear side of the box and the contents ot' the same in order to permit the contents to be grasped between the thumb and iinger when it is desired to withdraw said contents from the box. In order to overcome this ob jection, I cut away both the front and rear sides of the box at the top, so that the contents of the box can be grasped between the thumb at the front and the foreiinger at the rear as shown in Fi g1, and the said contents thereby readily withdrawn. The recessing of the rear side of the box is preferably effected by slitting the opposite corners of the rear of the box for some distance from the top of the same, and then scoring the rear side of the box transversely at the lower ends of these slits, so that the upper portion of the rear side of the box forms a iiap, h, which closes the recess when the cover of the box is down and the flap g tucked into the slit in the front side of the bJx, the flap readily yielding, however, tothe pressure of the finger when it is desired to remove the contents of the box. While this plan of forming the recess is preferable, it is not absolutely necessary to the proper carrying` out of my invention. For instance, an opening may be made in the rear side of the box and in the top, as shown iin Fig. 3, and, if desired, a yielding flap may be formed on the front side ofthe box, as also shown in said figure, this tlap taking the place of the usual thumb-notch. (Shown in Fig. l.)
I claim as my inventionl. A paper box having alid or cover connected to the rear side of thebox, and having both the front and rear sides ofthe box cut away at the top, so as to permit the contents of the box to be grasped between the thumb and nger in order to withdraw the same, as set forth.
2. The box having the front side cut away at the top, and a rear side also cut away and forming a yielding flap, @connected to the lid ofthe box, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBT. BROTZ.
