Description
Mwah 2i, i6? 5, FREUND,
COVER FOR A BOOKLET Filed June l1, 1965 United States Patent O 3,310,321 COVER FOR A BOOKLET Sheldon Freund, 2911 Barnes Ave., Bronx, N.Y. 10467 Filed June 11, 1965, Ser. No. 463,135 4 Claims. (Cl. 281-31) The present invention relates to an outer cover or binder for a booklet, and particularly to a soft or pliable cover or binding for small booklets of the type carried in the pocket such as calendars, address books, or the like and are usually provided with outer covers that are relatively stift but flexible.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a booklet having a cover, of the character described, which incorporates a pocket capable of receiving and holding flat objects, such as business or like cards, theatre tickets, or the like.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a booklet having a cover, of the character described including a pocket, which is made in one piece and is simple and easy to form and to assemble with the folio or folios between its sides.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a booklet having a cover, of the character described, in which the pocket is easy of access for inserting and removing its contents and yet safely retains such contents therein.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a booklet having a cover or binder, of the character described, which is reinforced at the point of connection to the folio and is stronger and more durable than covers or binders of similar or of even lighter material; as heretofore known.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a booklet having a cover, of the character described, which is easy and economical to produce.
It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a booklet, having a cover, of the character described, which is of minimum bulk and comfortable and convenient to carry in a pocket.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the booklet cover of the present invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof shown in ythe accompanying drawings and from the description following. It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, to make the principle and practice of the invention more readily comprehensible and without intent of limiting the invention to the specic details therein shown.
In the drawings:
FIG. l is a plan view of a blank for forming the booklet cover of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is an exploded view of a booklet having a cover of the present invention, with the cover showing in folded position and in readiness for assembly with the folio;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view ofthe assembled booklet, shown in partly open position, as viewed from the back; and
FIG. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
Referring now, in greater detail, to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, reference numeral designates, generally, a blank from which the cover for the booklet of the present invention is to be formed. Such blank 10 may be of heavy paper or paper stiffened by covering or treating with a plastic material or coating with metal. The blank 10 is of a length suicient to provide two panels 12 and 14, respectively, of equal height and width, and of a size adapted to form the two sides of the cover. One of the panels, as 14, may be provided with an extension along its transverse end edge, of a length 3,310,321 Patented Mar'. 2l., 1967v Fice sufficient to provide a third panel, 16, equal of width with panel 14, and an end ap 18, which is preferably extensive in height with panel 16. Panel 14 is provided with a flap extension 20, at one end which is adapted to be folded, along fold line 22, over panel 14. Panel 16 has a flap extension 24, on its edge opposed to flap 20.
In order to form from the blank 10 a cover for the folio 26, flap 20 is folded over against the inner face of panel 14 along fold line 22 and end panel 16 is then folded over, along line 28, on the inner face of center panel 14, with the flap 24 overlying a portion of the other end panel 12; the lower portion of panel 16 being simultaneously adhesively secured to the outer face of flap 20; the adhesive being applied either to the ap 20 or lower portion of the inner face of panel 16. The folio 26 is then secured to the folded and glued cover along lines 30, dening panels 12 and 14 from one another and along the overlying fold line 32, dening ap 18 from panel 16. The folio 26 may be secured in place by wire staples 34, in the conventional manner.
It will be readily apparent that by this arrangement a booklet is formed which has a cover provided with a pocket 36, dened between panels 14 and 16, whose one end is closed by the flap 20. It will also be apparent that this cover is reinforced to two thicknesses at the point 0f its connection to the folio 26 to provide eXtra strength and wear at that back edge of the booklet.
It will be further apparent that ap 24 of panel 16 may be folded over along line 38, to form a cover for the open end of the pocket 36, and, it may here be stated, Ithat the edge of the pocket opening in panel 14 may be indented, as at 40, to facilitate insertion or removal of material from the pocket 36. Additionally, a window 42, may be formed in panel 14 through which its contents may be visible.
This completes the description of the booklet cover of the present invention. It will be readily apparent that such cover is reinforced at the back of the booklet to strengthen it and give it greater durability at that point; that its pocket provides a useful and convenient facility which is provided at little expense and with a minimum of difficulty in formation of the cover or its assembly with the folio.
It will be further apparent that numerous variations and modifications may be made in the booklet cover of the present invention by anyone skilled in the art, in accordance with the principles of the invention hereinabove set forth and without the exercise of any inventive ingenuity. I desire, therefore, the protection of the patent laws for any and all such variations and modifications that may be made within lthe spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims hereto appended.
