FOOT REST FOR SURGICAL CHAIRS AND TABLES.
No. 333,220. Patented De0.'29, 188 5.,

HERMAN E. HILDEBRAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOOT-REST FOR SURGICAL CHAIRS AND TABLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,220, dated December 29, 1885,
Application filed September 14, 1885. Sr rial No. l77,039. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN E. HILDE- BRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests for Surgical Chairs and Tables; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I
My invention is designed to form an accessory to the surgical chairs and tables quite commonly in use by physicians and surgeons, to afi'ord to the patient occupying the same an easily-adjustable and, when adjusted, secure support for one or both feet, as may be required. My invention consists in the general construction of myiinproved device, whereby the foregoing ends are accomplished, and also in certain details of construction and combinations of parts forming the same, all as hereinafter more particulary set forth.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a chair having the seat portion removed to show the foot-rests of my improved construction applied to the same; Fig. 2. a longitudinal sectional view of the extensible mechanism of my device, having parts broken away to disclose details, and to permit representation of other parts upon the sheet; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional elevation of the stirrup-adjustment; Fig. 4, a broken plan view showing a modification, and Fig. 5 a perspective view of a detail. I
A represents the legs of a surgical-chair, and A the cross-pieces or lateral frame-work connecting the same. To the cross-piece A on each side of the chair is secured a metallic socket or sleeve, B, constructed at one end, as shown at if, there to fit closely about a sliding rod, 0, contained within the sleeve and afford to the rod a guide and support. A stirrup, D, is pivoted to the free extremity of each sliding rod or support 0 in the manner shown in Fig. 8, and is provided with a beveled backward-projecting extension, r, to bear against a beveled recess, r, in the sliding rod and maintain thestirrup in a horizontal position while in use, and when the parts occupy the position illustrated in Fig. 3, and at the same time permit it to fall down outof the way when not required, as shown at one side of Fig. 1.
Whenever an examination or operation is to be performed which requires the patient to be placed upon one side, as in the well-known Sims position, a foot-rest, D, 5, having a flange, w, for the sole of the foot to'bear against, is provided to rest upon andbe supported by a stirrup, D, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The foot-rest D may be attached to either stirrup D when desired, and'is securelyheld thereon by means of a block, 00, of a shape fitting the inner outline ofthe stir rup and formed upon the lower surface of the foot-rest.
Locking mechanism is provided to maintain the sliding rods 0, carrying the stirrups D, in any desired extended position, and the following is a description thereof: Each rod 0 is provided on one side with a longitudinal slot, 'q, forming a guide extending nearly the 4 whole length of the rod. or as far as itis desired that the rod shall be longitudinally extensible upon the chair, and recesses p are formed at short distances apart in the bottom of the slot to receive a locking-bolt, 0, sliding in a bearing, 0, and controlled by a lever, u. The lever u is connected to the bolt 0, as shown at u, and fulcru med at one extremityfu preferably to the sleeve or socket B, thus forming a lever of the second class, while its free extremity projects through a slotted recess, m, in the frame-work A of the chair, forming a handle, it. A spring, Z, preferably spiral, as shown, secured to the sleeve B and lever it, tends to press the bolt 0 continually against the rod 0. An opening, 70, (see Fig. 2,) is formed in the sleeve B toward its outer extremity through which a screw or screws, may be inserted into the red C toward its inner extremity and afford one form of projection or stop upon the rod to guide it and impinge against the constricted portion t of the sleeve and prevent entire withdrawal of the rod.
\Vhen not required for use, the stirrups D are turned down out of the way, as shown at one side of Fig. l, the rods 0 being previously slid into their sleeves B. When, however, it is desired to extend the device, the
rod 0 is turned over upon its axis and the stirrup turned to a horizontal position. The handle a of the lever u is then grasped in one hand to maintain the bolt 0 out of contact with any of the recesses 19, while the rod 0 is drawn out to the desired position with the other hand. The handle it being then released, the resistance of the spring I will cause the locking-bolt o to be shot into a recess, 19, and the rod and stirrup thus securely fastened.
Fig. 4 of the drawings represents a modification, in which a bell-crank lever, j, is substituted for the lever w, hereinbefore described. The lever j is fulcrumed to an extension, '0 of the bearing 0, and pivoted at one extremity to the bolt 0, and at the other extremity to a handle, i, the. whole operating against the resistance of a spring, It.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adjustable foot-rest for'surgeons operating chairs and tables, comprising a sleeve containing an extensible rod having a longitudinal recessed slot, and carrying a stirrup at one extremity, and means, substantially as described, for locking the rod in any extended position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a surgeons operating chair or table, a sleeve containing an extensible rod having a longitudinal recessed slot, and carrying a stirrup hinged at one extremity the slot, and having a stirrup, D, hinged at one extremity, and means, substantially as described, for locking the rod in any extended position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with a surgeons opererating chair or table, of an adjustable footrest comprising, in combination, a sleeve, B, constricted toward one extremity and secured to the chair, an extensible rod, G, within the sleeve having a stop, It, and slotted longitudinally and provided with recesses in the slot,
and having a stirrup, D, hinged at one eX-.
tremity and provided with an extension, 7', forming a stop, and means, substantially as described, for locking the rod in any extended position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
