UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT D. DUNCAN, OF OMAHA,-NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALEXANDER WALLACE, OF SAME PLACE.
STRAINER FOR CATCH-BASINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,935, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed May 14, 1885. Serial No. 165,470. (No modelJ F, provided with a number of openings, e, and centrally with a series of vertical projections or spurs, f. Now, when the soil is discharged from the closet into the chamber A, it strikes upon the disk F and passes through the openings 6 into the discharge to the sewer. The rags and other foreign matter do not pass through the openings until they have been disintegrated and torn by the pins f, after which they may pass through. Vhenever water is admitted freely to the chamber, it flushes the disk F,thus serving to wash mattcrlodged thereon through the openings 6 thereof. When the deposit on the disk F is such as to clog the action of the device, the disk may be manipulated through a handhole in the cover B, and the accumulated matter thus removed. Thesaid hand-hole is provided with a cover, G, to close the former.
His an opening with which the ventilatingpipe is connected, and I an overflow-pipe.
It will be obvious that the device is not only simple and durable, but efficient in operation.
J is a dischargecock designed to indicate the condition of the disk F, for when the latter is clogged the cock. when opened, will discharge more or less effinvia.
I claim- The combinatiomwith a chamber, A, containing the convex perforated and spurred disk of adiameter approximating that of the said chamber, of an independent top pro vided with an inlet-opening, a man-hole, anC' cock J, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature i1 presence of two witnesses.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. Duncan, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers for Catch-Basins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for preventing sluice and sewer pipes from becoming clogged up by means of foreign substancessuch as rags, paper, Std-passing from a water-closet; and the said invention consists in the improvementshereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a rear view of myimprovement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of said improvement, and Fig. 3 is a detail plan view.
A refers to a chamber or casing, which has an annular horizontal flange, a, at its upper edge, which is perforated for the passage of securing-bolts b,designed to hold the cover or top B of the chamber in position thereon. The said cover or top, B, is provided with a centralaperture, O, which is surrounded by an annular flange, c, for the more ready attachment of the end of the drain or sluicepipe leading from the closet. The bottom D of the casing A is also provided centrally with an opening having a depending offset, (1, for connection with a pipe main or sewer.
E is an annular ring, which is located in said chamber or casing, and the said ring is cut away to form a seat for a convex disk,
ROBERT D. DUNCAN.
