(cl. 224-5) ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE As is perhaps well known, painters when painting surfaces are often required to apply putty in recesses, such as nail holes, in the surface being painted, and, consequently, are required to have a supply of putty available. Since putty includes an oil base, if it is placed in a convenient location on a scaffold or floor, it dries by reason of the absorption of the oil leaving an unworkable putty residue. The present invention is of an attachment for the visor of a painters cap which is made out of metal and preferably spring steel so that the wearer will have the supply of putty in a convenient location at all times so that he may dab the required amount of putty in a recess required to be filled before painting over it.

It is, accordingly, an object of this invention to provide a putty holding attachment for a painters cap which includes a metal putty holding receptacle and clip means carried on the receptacle to releasably attach the same to the distal edge of the visor of a painters cap.

It is another object of this invention to provide an attachment for the visor of a painters cap to carry a supply of putty therein which includes a receptacle with upstanding walls substantially therearound and having a floor extension which is reversely bent so as to underlie the floor and which is formed in a clip having a rst leg and a second leg having a bite portion therebetween to engage the visor of the paintersvcap.

It is a general object of this invention to provide a device of the type described hereinafter which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, -and is readily adapted for optional use by a painter on the visor of his cap so that he will have a ready supply'of putty at hand.

In accordance with these and other objects which will become apparent hereinafter, the instant invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the putty holding attachment in position on the visor of a cap of a wearer;

FIGURE 2 is a side view of the instant invention in cross section to illustrate the construction of the spring clip; and

FIGURE 3 is a plan view showing the arrangement of a piece of metal in outline form and adapted to be formed into the structure shown in FIGURE 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, and referring particularly to FIGURE 1, the numeral 12 generally designates the attachment which it is seen includes a main tloor 14 bounded by a rear wall 16 and

The tloor extends outwardly and in- 3,346,153 Patented Oct. 10, 1967 cludes an elongate tongue portion generally designated by the numeral 22 with the tongue being reversely bent as at 24 adjacent its connection with the lloor so that it slopes downwardly and defines a U-shaped clip portion 28 having a rst leg 30 and a second leg 32 joined together at a bite with the leg substantially underlying the oor and the bite being disposed near an extension of the plane of the rear wall. By reason of this construction, the attachment is adapted to be positioned on the leading edge of the visor. Additionally, the undersurface of the floor 14 and leg 30 define therebetween a slot opening toward the rear wall 16, and thus a workman can suspend the putty holder (with rear wall 16 extending downwardly) over the edge of his belt and accordingly have putty in a readily accessible position. Preferably, the attachment is of one piece construction of spring steel and with the bite of the clip being arranged to tightly and snugly hold the attachment in position on the leading or distal edge 33 of the visor 34 on the painters cap 36.

Referring to FIGURE 3, the construction of the instant invention will be apparent. It is seen to comprise the substantially T-shaped metal piece, which as aforesaid is preferably spring steel, with the bar of the T comprising the side Walls which are adapted to be folded into upstanding relation with respect to the oor portion as is the top of the stem of the T. It will be seen that the extending tongue portion is adapted to be formed into the clip by the ldegree bite bent intermediate its length and that a flared mouth 38 is provided by reason of the distal end of the tongue being folded slightly downwardly. It will thus be apparent that there has been provided a convenient putty holding attachment for use by painters and by reason of the fact that it is made out of metal the putty will stay soft and pliable for immediate use in painting.

While the instant invention has been shown and described herein in what is conceived to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is recognized that departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the invention, which is therefore not to be limited to the details disclosed herein but is to be accorded the full scope of the claims so as to embrace any and all equivalent apparatus and articles.

What is claimed is:

1. A putty holder for detachable engagement on the edge of a cap visor or alternatively over a users belt edge comprising: a receptacle having a floor including bordering side and rear walls extending from one surface of said oor, said receptacle side walls having free terminal edges forming an opening anking a free edge portion of said oor for permitting ready access to putty contained in said receptacle, and spring clip means below the other surface of the floor, said clip means comprising a reverse-bend portion depending from said receptacle opening and extending substantially the length of said floor defining an elongated tongue forming an open slot opening toward said rear wall, said clip means having a second reverse-bend portion depending beneath said open slot and extending substantially the length of said tongue and defining a leg forming with said tongue a second slot opening toward said receptacle opening whereby said first slot permits the putty holder to be suspended from a users belt and said second slot permits said putty holder to be supported on the edge of the visor of a cap.

2. The structure as claimed in claim 1 in which said tongue and leg are substantiallythe width of said floor for providing stability to the putty holder when it is detachably supported.

Claims

1. A PUTTY HOLDER FOR DETACHABLE ENGAGEMENT ON THE EDGE OF A CAP VISOR OR ALTERNATIVELY OVER A USER''S BELT EDGE COMPRISING: A RECEPTACLE HAVING A FLOOR INCLUDING BORDERING SIDE AND REAR WALLS EXTENDING FROM ONE SURFACE OF SAID FLOOR, SAID RECEPTACLE SIDE WALLS HAVING FREE TERMINAL EDGES FROMING AN OPENING FLANKING A FREE EDGE PORTION OF SAID FLOOR FOR PERMITTING READY ACCESS TO PUTTY CONTAINED IN SAID RECEPTACLE, AND SPRING CLIP MEANS BELOW THE OTHER SURFACE OF THE FLOOR, SAID CLIP MEANS COMPRISING A REVERSE-BEND PORTION DEPENDING FROM SAID RECEPTACLE OPENING AND EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY THE LENGTH OF SAID FLOOR DEFINING AN ELONGATED TONGUE FORMING AN OPEN SLOT OPENING TOWARD SAID REAR WALL, SAID CLIP MEANS HAVING A SECOND REVERSE-BEND PORTION DEPENDING BENEATH SAID OPEN SLOT AND EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY THE LENGTH OF SAID TONGUE AND DEFINING A LEG FORMING WITH SAID TONGUE A SECOND SLOT OPENING TOWARD SAID RECEPTACLE OPENING WHEREBY SAID FIRST SLOT PERMITS THE PUTTY HOLDER TO BE SUSPENDED FROM A USER''S BELT AND SAID SECOND SLOT PERMITS SAID PUTTY HOLDER TO BE SUPPORTED ON THE EDGE OF THE VISOR OF A CAP.
