SIDING FOR BUILDINGS.
No. 335,342. Patented Feb. 2, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ALBERT O. DAUGHERTY, OF NORTH BELLE VERNON, PENNSYLVANIA ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN J. JONES, OF SAME PLACE.
SIDING FOR BUILDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,342, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed September 14, 1885. Serial No. 177,095. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. DAUGHERTY,
of North Belle Vernon, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Siding for Buildings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists, first, in the peculiar manner of forming the tongue and groove in siding for buildings, so as to present an inclined edge to conduct water from the joint, substantially as hereinafter described second, in sidingfor frame buildings, the tongue and groove constructed so as to present, when united, an incline to conduct water from the joint, and chamfered so as to present, when secured to the side of a building, blocks of stone, substantially as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a fragment of two sides of a building, showing my improved siding applied thereto and chamfered, so as to represent blocks of stone. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of two pieces of siding detached,
showing the tongue and groove united to form the exposed incline to conduct water from the joint, and the chamfer to represent blocks of stone. Fig. 3 isasingle board in perspective, detached, to show the tongue and inclined shoulder on one edge and the groove and V- shaped lip on the opposite edge; Figs. 4 and 5, detailed views of Fig. 1.
A in the accompanying drawings represents the ordinary siding for buildings, with my improved tongued and grooved edges to conduct water from the joints, and to represent a series of blocks of stone. One lip of the groove E is made V-shaped, and one shoulder of the tongued edge is correspondingly beveled or inclined, so that when the tongued and grooved edges are united on the side of a building they will present a groove, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to imitate blocks of stone, and the beveled shoulder D, which is partly exposed, will conduct the water running down the side of a building away from the joint.
By this construction of tongue and groove on the edges of siding the V-shaped lip O and the correspondingly inclined or beveled shoulder D, when united to form the siding, will present an incline, to conduct water from the joint, of about forty-five degrees, (more or less,) as described, and will also present the appearance of blocks of stone having chamfered edges to form a groove, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2.
At any desired distance to imitate the length of a block of stone the board is grooved perpendicularly or crosswise, as shown also in Figs. 1 and 2.
The degree to the incline D and the V-shaped lip 0 may be varied to suit the different constructors. The corners of the building may be finished with corner-blocks B, either flush with the siding, as in Fig. 1, or on the outside of the siding, as shown in Fig. 4.
In order to closely imitate blocks of stone, the boards may be sanded with the color of sand to correspond with the particular stone to be imitated.
It is evident that by varying the pitch of 7 the inclines O D the V-shaped chamfer will be wider or narrower, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, siding for buildings, tongued and grooved substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described, consisting of an inclined shoulder on one side of the tongue and a V-shaped 85 lip on one side of the groove to correspond therewith, as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, siding for buildings, tongued and grooved substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth, whereby a V- shaped horizontal groove is formed, in combination with a series of grooves perpendicular or crosswise on the boards to complete the imitation of blocks of stone, substantially as described.
ALBERT O. DAUGHERTY.
