Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
NOAII DOVNING, OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-BELTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,579, dated October 2.9, 1861.
exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawing, making part of this specilication, A represents the belt, which is made of metal, and which is provided with any of the usual and convenient fastenings.
This belt may be made either ot` strap metal jointed or without joint, or it may be made of wire and covered with any suitable material, such as' thread, india-rubber, or any other proper material. This belt is provided with a small metallic box or pocket upon its outside, which is large enough to hold any amount of money which it is desirable to carry upon the person or any small articles of valuable jewelry. i
The box or pocket B is provided with a suitable cover or lid, which has a lock secured to it for the purpose of securing the lid permanently when desirable.
The importance of this invention is readily `perceived when it is considered that many thousands ot' men in the army are constantly moving about from one place to another, with no place to carry money but upon their persons in the uniform-pockets which they wear. The soldiers are very liable from their habits to lose money from their pockets, and thus suier much for want of means to purchase necessaries as well as comforts.
Not only is the invention suitable for soldiers, but for all persons who travel about exposed to pickpockets and thieves.
This belt cannot be cut from the person, and the box or pocket 'cannot be openedwithout a key while the belt is being Worn. Hence it is evident that it will be impossible for money or little valuable trinkets to be taken from the owner of one of the belts when his effects are inclosed in the box and the belt is secured on his person.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the metallic belt A with the box or pocket B, the same being used and secured substantially as and for the purpose specified.
