MEANS FOR SECURING A PACKING SLIP TO A PACKAGE Filed Oct. 15, 1965 ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,370,365 MEANS FOR SECURING A PACKING SLIP TO A PACKAGE Jack Thomas Vosbikian, 127 Adrienne St., iBlackwood, NJ. 08012 Filed Oct. 15, 1965, Ser. No. 496,382 1 Claim. (Cl. -10) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a label for securing an invoice to a package and consists of a novel construction and arrangement and consists of a top strip having adhesive on its bottom face and a protective strip secured by the adhesive to the bottom of the top strip and having a removable blank portion when the bottom strip is peeled olf of the top strip. The blank portion remains on the top strip so that when an invoice is placed on a package, the blank portion covers the invoice and the adhesive surrounding the blank portion when the top strip is placed against the package, secures the invoice in place. The top strip may have a perforated line defining the contour of the blank portion, enabling the removal of that portion of the top strip together with the blank portion adhering to it, to permit the removal of the invoice from the package.
It is now conventional in the application of packing slips to a shipment of packages or cartons to place the packing slip in 'an envelope and to secure the envelope to a package or carton by strips of gummed tape.
The object of this invention is to devise novel means for securing the packing slip directly to the packages or cartons, comprising an outer strip having adhesive material on the inner face of the strip at marginal portions of the outer strip, the space between the adhesive material being adapted to receive the packing slip and a stripable inner strip, normally secured to the outer strip by the adhesive material, and on removal of the inner strip to the packing slip is placed on the blank portion of the outer strip, and the outer strip and packing slip are then in position to be placed on the package with the packing slip' concealed beneath the outer strip.
One or both of the two strips may be transparent.
A further object of the invention is to provide the removable strip with a cut-out being adapted to be secured to the inner face of the outer strip when the inner strip is removed, or the cut-out may not be used and the packing slip is placed in the space between the adhesive material.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, as will hereinafter more clearly appear, my invention comprehends novel means for securing a packing slip to a package or carton.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings preferred embodiments of it which I have found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a package with my novel means for applying a packing slip to a package applied thereto.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the separable strip is removed.
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view showing the top adhesive strip being applied to a package with the packing slip in place.
3,370,365 Patented Feb. 27, 1968 FIGURE 4 is a top plan view.
FIGURE 5 is a bottom plan view with the separable strip being partly peeled back to expose the adhesive layer.
FIGURE 6 is a side elevation.
FIGURE 7 is a modified form in which both layers are shown as transparent.
FIGURE 8 is a bottom plan view of a modified form of the adhesive layer in which the adhesive is only spotted in a desired area.
FIGURE 9 is a bottom plan view of another modified form with the separable strip partly removed and in which the center cut-out is eliminated and the adhesive placed only in the desired area.
FIGURE 10 is a top plan view of a modified form having a viewing window.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings:
The means for securing a packing slip to a package comprises two strips of any desired contour, preferably but not necessarily in rectangular form and consisting of an outer or top strip 1 and an inner or bottom removable strip 2, the outer strip at the marginal portions of its inner face being provided with adhesive material 3, which may be of continuous band formation or of staggered formation.
The bottom strip 2 is die-cut at 4 to provide a separable central portion 5 which may be secured to the inner face of the top strip 'by adhesive so that a smooth space is provided between opposite side marginal portions of the adhesive for the reception of a packing slip 6. The top strip 1 may be provided with perforations 7 so that when applied to a package the packing slip may be removed from the strip.
A corner of the bottom of the top strip is preferably left free of adhesive as at 8 to provide a starting area.
Both top and bottom strips may be of transparent material if desired, as shown in FIGURE 7.
In FIGURE 8' the adhesive is shown spotted in a desired area as at 9, leaving sufiicient blank space for the placing of the packing slip.
In the modification shown in FIGURE 9 the die-cut is eliminated and the adhesive only is used as at 10.
FIGURE 10 is provided with a viewing window 11 on the top strip.
For securing the packing slip to a package, the bottom strip is peeled off, the packing slip placed between the marginal portions of the adhesive material and the top strip is pressed against the package, thus sealing the packing slip between the package and the top strip. If the entire surface of the bottom of the top strip is provided with adhesive, then when the bottom strip is peeled off the central portion or die-cut is gummed to the top strip, thus providing a smooth surface for receiving a packing slip.
It will be understood that instead of a packing slip, it may be an invoice, descriptive matter, or matter having relationship with the package or shipment. The portion of the bottom strip surrounding the blank portion, is defined in the claim as a border strip.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Means for securing a packing slip to a package comprising a top strip having its face devoid of openings and having its entire bottom face coated with adhesive, a blank portion having its top face permanently secured to the bottom of the top strip by said adhesive, the bottom of the blank portion being devoid of adhesive and a border strip surrounding the blank portion, with its top face being secured to the bottom of the top strip by said adhesive whereby, when the border strip is peeled off, and
