IMPROVEMENT IN PRESERVlNG-VESSELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,870, dated December 3, 1861.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. B. WILsoN, of \Villiamstown, county of Camden, and State of. New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Covers and Mouths of PreservingVessels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
- My invention consists of a cover with an annular flange, an annular projection, and a gum-elastic ring, in combination with a yoke or its equivalent, and with the tapering mouth of a preservingvessel, said mouth having a shoulder, and the whole being arranged in the manner described hereinafter, so that the sealing of the vessel may be effected partly by the lateral and partly by the vertical compression of the gum-elastic ring, which renders the cover more securely airtight than those of ordinary preservingvessels in which the scaling is accomplished by the vertical compression only of the ring (r by its lateral compression only.
In order to enable othersto make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the manner in which it is constructed and ap plied.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved cover and mouth for preserving-vessels, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.
A represents the upper portion of the preserving-vessel, the interior of the mouth of which is of the tapering form represented at cm, Fig. 1, this taperinginterior of the mouth terminating at a shoulder, b, which will be more particularly alluded to hereinafter.
B is the cross bar or yoke. the bent ends (Z of which are arranged to bear against a shoulder, 6, formed on the exterior of the vessels neck, and through this yoke passes a screw, D, furnished at the top with a suitable handle, f, the point of the screw fitting into a slight indentation formed in the middle of the cover H. This cover, which may be of glass, metal, or other suitable material, has an annular flange, h, forming a shoulder against which bears the upper surface of the gum-elastic ring I, the latter being stretched over and tightly embracing the annular projection 2', formed on the under side of the cover H, on the upper surface of which are suitable projections, j j, affording the means of readily withdrawing the cover from the vessels mouth.
It should be understood that the gum-elastic ring, when the cover is detached, is as large or nearly as large in diameter as the upper edge of the tapering mouth, so that when the cover is applied in the first instance it will not penetrate the mouth to the full depth, (shown in Fig. 1. of the drawings,) but will lodge near the edge of the mouth until the screw D is turned and forces the cover downward,thereby causing the tapering mouth to impart a lateral compression to the gumelastic ring. After the latter has been brought into contact with the shoulder b, which, as before remarked, forms the termination of the tapered portion of the vessels mouth, the turning of the screwis continued to a limited extent, so that the ring is further compressed between the collar tormed by the annular flange h of the cover and the permanent collar b, formed in the vessels mouth. It will thus be seen that the cover is bound perfectly tight to the vessel partly by the lateral and partly by the vertical compression of the gum-elastic ring. and that the vessels mouth is more effectually and securely sealed by this double compression than in that class of preservingvessels which are sealed either by the vertical compression only of a ring or by its lateral compression only.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent The cover H, its annular flange h, the annular projection i, and gum-elastic ring I, in combination with the tapering mouth a of the vessel, and the collar 1), together with the yoke 13 or its equivalent, the whole being arranged as set forth, for the purpose specified.
