Description

Sept. 24, 1968 A. YANNUZZI EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION ALARM Filed June 27. 1966 United States Patent Oflice 3,402,808 Patented Sept. 24, 1968 3,402,808 EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION ALARM Anthony Yannuzzi, Birchwood Ave., West Orange, NJ. 07052 Filed June 27, 1066, Ser. No. 560,510 2 Claims. (Cl. 206-42) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An emergency medical information carrier consisting of a compartmentized container having in one compartment a manually operated audible alarm device, in a second compartment a medical information containing card or sheet and in a third compartment a medicament such as a tablet or pill. The container includes a bottom housing in which the compartments are provided and an upper enclosing hinged cover including a compartment mating with the alarm containing compartment of the housing, the container is formed to be worn on the wrist of a person and the alarm device is provided with a manually operated stem extending upwardly from the cover which on appropriate movement by the person will cause the alarm device to operate whereby to attract the attention of others to the container on the person in the event of an emergency and to the medical information contained therewithin.
This invention relates to an emergency medical information carrier and pill container.
There is presently available through various organizations types of medical information carriers worn by individuals in the form of bracelet or lockets or carried in or on the clothing of the individual, the purpose of which is to disclose medical information in an emergency. In all such types, however, the medical information must be found first before help can be given. Thus, any person coming to the aid of an individual in an emergency would have to be knowledgeable about such a container in order to look for one and this is far from likely, giving rise to the risk that the stricken individual may be given treatment detrimental to his condition. It is well known that many individuals have a hidden medical ailment that requires special treatment during emergencies and routine first-aid measures can prove dangerous, even fatal, if the presence of such special medical conditions is not known.
It is accordingly the principal object of this invention to provide in a medical information carrier of any of the known types an alarm device. There are many ailments where victims in an emergency do not lose consciousness at once and actually recognize an attack coming on. Thus, a medical information carrier with an alarm device worn or carried by the victim can easily be activated by him before losing consciousness and so attract the person coming to his aid directly to the source of the alarm to reveal the container and its emergency medical information.
Another object of this invention is to provide a compartmentized container that includes in one compartment having a readily openable closure the desired medical information, directions and identification; in another compartment an alarm device that is readily actuated by a protruding lever or button and if desired still another compartment for containing emergency pills or other medicinal agents used in emergency treatment.
A further object of this invention relates to providing the container with alarm in the form of a bracelet or locket to be worn by an individual; or the container may have a pin clasp thereon for attachment to the clothing of the individual or the container may have no attaching or carrying means thereon whereby to be simply carried in the pocket or purse.
Yet another object of this invention relates to providing either a mechanically operated or electrical operated alarm device in the container.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the above and related objects, my invention may be embodied in the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, attention being called to the fact, however, that the drawings are illustrative only, and that change may be made in the specific construction illustrated and described within the scope of the appended claims.
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the combined medical information container and alarm in the form of a bracelet.
FIGURE 1a is a modified form of the invention shown in the form of a locket.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the container in partially opened position.
FIGURE 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3, FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary view of the sheet with medical information to be placed within the container.
FIGURE 5 is a diagrammatic view of an alarm mechanism.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the medical information container 10 is shown to embody a lower receptacle or receiver 12 and an upper closure 14, both formed of any desired material such as metal or plastic. The receiver 12 is of rectangular formation having shallow longitudinal side walls 15, a forward transverse end wall 16 and a bottom wall 17. The rear end of the receiver 12 is open. Intermediate parallel partition walls 20, 21 extend between the receiver side wall 15 to define a pill containing compartment 22. The space between partition 21 and end wall 16 provides a compartment 24 for the sheet 26 of medical information, see FIGURE 4. The space between partition 20 and the rear open end of the receiver defines a compartment 27 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The upper closure 14 is formed similar to the lower receiver 12 and has a top wall 28, a forward transverse end wall 29, longitudinal side walls 30, and a rear transverse wall 31. A single partition wall 33 divides the closure into a forward compartment 35 for the sheet 26 and a rear compartment 36 for housing an alarm mechanism.
The receiver 12 and closure 14 are hingedly secured together by pins or rivets 40 at the corresponding rear ends of their respective side walls 15, 30; the dimensions of the closure and receiver being such that the walls of the closure will lie outside of the walls of the receiver (note FIG. 2) when completely closed and in substantially close relation to each other. The walls of the closure and receiver are also of substantially the same Width. Also the partition 33 of the closure 14 is so related to the partition 20 of the receiver as to lie rearwardly thereof and adjacent thereto when the container 10 is completely closed. At each end of partition 33 there is a gap (not shown) each receiving therein a side wall 15 of the receiver when the container 10 is closed.
In the form shown in FIGURES 2 and 3, the bottom wall 17 and top wall 28, respectively of the receiver and closure are arcuate in order that the container 10 may be worn as a bracelet. The end walls 16 and 31 are each provided with loop 42 for attachment thereto of a wrist band 44 in the manner well known.
Contained within compartment 36 of the closure 14 is an alarm mechanism 50 of any desired type mechanical or electrical and/or electronic such as is employed in the alarms of watches, and contained within a housing 52 fitted within compartment 36 with clearance (not shown) between the side walls of the housing and the closure walls 30 to accommodate the receiver side walls 15.
One such form of alarm motor is shown schematically in FIGURE and is merely exemplary, embodies a spirally wound spring 54 serving as a spring motor to drive the gong 55 for striking action on the bell 56 when the power of the spring is released as by the stem 58 which is pulled out of the socket 59. The socket 59 has a square opening 60 to receive the square lower end 61 of the stem 58 when the stem is partly depressed so as to enable winding of the spring 54. A detent 64 on the head of stem 58 fits in opening 65 on the closure top wall when the stem 58 is wholly depressed to hold the spring 54 in wound position. Disengagement of detent 64 from hole 65 when the stem 58 is pulled up will start the alarm in operation.
It is to be understood that in lieu of the type of alarm shown in FIGURE 5, other types of alarm mechanisms, electric or electronic, may be employed. My invention contemplates using an alarm mechanism of any desired type for the purpose described hereinabove, the structure of the alarm mechanism per se not forming a part of my invention.
The top surface of top wall 14 is provided with an insignia plate 70 and instruction indicia as to how to open the container 10. The sheet 26 of medical information is folded in zig-zag fashion for placement in the compartments 24, 35 of the container 10.
In FIGURE lathe container a with alarm is similar in all respects to that of FIGURES 2, 3 except that the rear end wall of the closure 14a is provided With an eye 74 through which is passed a claim 76 for hanging the container 10a as a locket from the neck. When used as a locket, the container 10a is flat on its top and bottom walls.
It is to be understood that the container with alarm may be without loops or eyes at its end walls so that it may be carried in a pocket or purse. Also such a container may be provided on its back with a safety pin clasp (not shown) suitable for attaching the same to a persons garment.
The novel features and the operation of this device will be apparent from the foregoing description. While the device has been shown and the structure described in detail, it is obvious that this is not to be considered limited to the exact form disclosed, and that changes may be made therein within the scope and the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
