UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDYVARD XVILLIAMS, JR, AND RALPH M. LASHELL, OF OENTBALIA, PA.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340.750, dated April 27, 1886.
' Application filed January 29, 1886. Serial No. 190,256. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWARD WILLIAMs, Jr., and RALPH M. .LASHELL, of Centralia, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trusses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our inr proved truss. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the frame of the truss-pad, and Fig. 4 shows a part of a double truss.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and reliable truss which may be worn with comfort, and which may support the parts without unnecessary pressure and without complicated adjustment.
Our invention consists in a rod or wire curved to encircle the body, provided at the back with two eyes carrying pads, and with an adj usting-strap and buckle, and at the front with two or more loops inclosed by the trusspad.
In carrying out our invention we form the body or frame of the truss of iron, steel, or brass wire having sufficient rigidity to retain its form, and having elasticity enough to permit of yielding to the changing figure of the body, the wire being protected by electroplating, by tinning, japanning, or in any other suitable way.
The ends of the wire forming the back of the truss are bent to form loops or eyes A, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) which are inclosed by cases B, which are padded or filled with suitable elastic material, forming pads which press upon the back. To one of the pads is secured a strap, 0, and to the other abuckle, D. By means of the strap and buckle the size of the truss may be varied within certain limits.
The wire of which the truss is formed is By bending the wire of which the body of 6 the truss is formed it may be perfectly adapted to the requirements of the user, and this may a be accomplished by the wearer himself.
Our improved truss may be made without the employment of special machinery and of material which may be procured in the open market, and although it is inexpensive it is as efficient as the more costly devices for the same purpose.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A truss formed of a wire curved to conform to the figure of the body, and bent back and forth upon itself to form loops for the frame-work of the pad, and a suitable covering and filling for the pad, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a truss formed of wire bent back and forth upon itself to make the frame-work of the pad, a casing enveloping the frame-work of the pad and inclosing a suitable filling, eyes formed upon the ends of the Wire and inclosed in pads, and a strap and buckle for connecting the ends of the wire, substantially as herein shown and described.
