Description

United States Patent Ofice 3,407,810 Patented Oct. 29, 1968 3,407,810 BIBLICAL TUBE Lester L. Waldrep, 19410 Burt Road, Detroit, Mich. 48219 Filed Nov. 12, 1965, Ser. No. 507,456 6 Claims. (Cl. 128-4455) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A biblical tube for use in mouthto-mouth resuscitation having a saliva trap at the victims end and offset mouthpieces.
This invention relates to an improved biblical tube for use in mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is one of the oldest and best known methods for reviving victims of suffocation, drowning or the like. In this method, air is blown into the victims lungs through his month by direct mouth-tomouth contact with the administering person. The physical contact between the parties has offered a psychological objection to the use of this method of resuscitation even though it is highly effective.
It is, therefore, the principal object of this invention to provide an improved biblical tube to be used in mouth-tomouth resuscitation and which eliminates all of the psychological objections to such method of resuscitation.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved biblical tube that precludes the flow of saliva into the victims mouth from the person administering the resuscitation.
-It is a still further object of the invention to provide an improved biblical tube that may be used without any direct person-to-person contact between the parties.
A biblical tube embodying this invention is comprised of an elongated hollow member having a victims end adapted to be inserted into a victims mouth and another end adapted to be inserted in anothers mouth. A closure is formed at the victims end and at least one air outlet opening extends through the side of the hollow member adjacent the closure. The spacing between the air outlet opening and the closure is sufiicient so that the air outlet opening will lie within the mouth of the victim when inserted therein but is sufiicient volume above the closure to provide a saliva trap. An air outlet opening is formed at the other end at a sufi'icient distance to preclude direct person-to-person contact during the use of the device.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become more apparent as this description proceeds, particularly when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view, with portions shown in section, of a biblical tube embodying this invention and inserted in the mouths of a victim and administering person,
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view taken 180 from FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is an end view showing the victims end of the tube.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, a biblical tube embodying this invention is identified generally by the reference numeral 11. The biblical tube 11 is comprised of an elongated hollow tubular member 12 having a generally cylindrical shape. A longitudinally extending cylindrical passage 13 extends substantially the full length of the member 12 coaxially with its outer periphery. A curved mouthpiece 14 is afi'ixed to one end of the tubular member 12 and has a generally arcuate shape that is adapted to engage the lips of an administering person, shown in phantom and identified generally by the reference numeral 15 (FIG. 2). The mouthpiece 14 forms a seal between the lips of the person 15 and the respective end of the biblical tube 11 so that substantially all of the air blown from the mouth of the person 14 will pass into the passage 13 through the open upper endof the tubular member 12.
The lower end of the tubular member 12, which may be considered to be a victims end, is closed by a pair of side wall sections 16 and 1.7 that converge together and meet, as at 18, to form a closure for the victims end of the biblical tube 11. The side wall sections 16 and 17 may be formed by any pressing operation and form a wedge-shaped section, indicated generally by the reference numeral 19, that serves to open the mouth of a victim. The victim is illustrated in phantom and identified generally by the reference numeral 21. The converging side walls of the section 19 have sufficient width to engage and depress the tongue of the victim 21.
A pair of air outlet openings 22 are formed in the victims end of the tubular member 12 above the wedgeshaped sect-ion 19. The air outlet openings 22 are spaced close enough to the end closure 18 so that they will lie within the mouth of the victim 21 when the victims end is properly inserted but also lie a sufiicient distance above the end closure 18 to provide a volume, indicated generally by the reference numeral 23, that will function as a saliva trap. Any saliva leaving the mouth of the administering person 15 will flow down the tubular member 12 and collect in the trap 23 rather than passing into the victims mouth.
A mouthpiece 24 is afiixed to the tubular member 12 adjacent the victims end and is adapted to sealingly engage the lips of the victim 21 (FIG. 1) so that substantially all of the air blown from the mouth of the administering person 15 will pass into the mouth of the victim 21. It will be noted that the mouthpieces 14 and 24 (FIG. 3) are offset about from each other. Thus, the biblical tube 11 is used with the bodies of the persons disposed at 90 to each other so that they will not have to lie directly over each other. In addition, the mouthpieces 14 and 24 are spaced sufiiciently so as to preclude any direct person-to-person contact and to provide sufficient spacing between the faces of the victim and the administering person to remove any psychological objection to the use of the disclosed biblical tube.
While it will be apparent that the preferred embodiments of the invention disclosed are well calculated to fulfill the objects above stated, it will be appreciated that the invention is susceptible to modification, variation and change without departing from the proper scope or fair meaning of the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A mouth-to-mouth resuscitation device comprised of an elongated hollow member having a victims end means for insertion into a victims mouth and other end means for insertion in anothers mouth, a mouth piece affixed to said hollow member at said victims end means and adapted to sealingly engage a victims lips when said victims end means is inserted into his mouth, means forming a closure for said victims end means, at least one air outlet opening extending through the side of said hollow member in said victims end means, said mouth piece being spaced from said air outlet opening along said hollow member toward said other end means, said air outlet opening being spaced from said closure means a sufficient distance to lie within the mouth of a victim when said victims end means is inserted therein, the spacing of said air outlet opening from said closure means having sufiicient volume to provide a saliva trap in said victims end means, and an air inlet opening formed at said other end means, said air inlet and outlet openings being spaced sufiiciently to preclude direct person-to-per- 2. A resuscitation device as set forth in claim 1 further including a second mouthpiece affixed to the hollow member adjacent the other end for sealingly engaging another persons lips when said other end is inserted in the other persons mouth.
3. A resuscitation device as set forth in claim 2 wherein the mouthpieces are offset about 90 from each other.
4. A mouth-to-mouth resuscitation device comprised of an elongated hollow member having a victims end means for insertion into a victims mouth and other end means for insertion in anothers mouth, a mouth piece affixed to said hollow member at said victims end means and adapted to sealingly engage a victims lips when said victims end means is inserted into his mouth, means forming a closure for said victims end means, at least one air out-let opening extending through the side of said hollow member in said victims end means, said mouth piece being spaced from said air outlet opening along said hollow member toward said other end means, said air outlet opening being spaced from said closure means a sufficient distance to lie within the mouth of a victim when said victims end means is inserted therein, the spacing of said air outlet opening from said closure means having suificient volume to provide a saliva trap in said victims end means, said closure means being formed 'by converging side Wall sections of said hollow member, said converging side wall sections forming wedge means for assisting in opening a victims mouth upon insertion, said sections having a substantially greater width than the remaining portion of said hollow member for engaging and depressing a victims tongue when inserted in his mouth, and an air inlet opening formed at said other end-means, said air inlet and outlet'openings being spaced sufficiently to preclude direct person-to-person contact during the use of said resuscitation device.
5. A resuscitation device as set forth in claim 4 further including another mouthpiece fixedto the other end of said hollow member and adapted to sealingly engage another persons lipswhen inserted in his mouth.
6. A resuscitation device as set forth in claim 5 wherein the mouthpieces are offset about 90 from each other.
