Description
UNITED v STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES PIERCY, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
`,IMPROVEMENT IN WASHERS FOR PAPER-PULP.
Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,214, dated January 21, 1862.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES PIERCY, of the town of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Nashers for Paper-Pulp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had therein to the drawings which accompany this specification and make part of the same.
The nature of m-y invention consists in a discharge of the water from an open end in a washer through the side of the tub or vat in which the pulp is beaten by a new way of opening and closing the valve.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the vat with the washer in place. Fig. 2 shows that side of the valve board or plate which goes to the side of the vat. Fig. 3 is an edge section of the vat, the plate, and the washer. Fig. 4 is the side of the board or plate that goes against the washer. Fig. 5 is an upper edge view of the plate and its slides.
The same letters refer to the same parts in each figure.
The letter A shows the vat or tub; B, the washer; O, the valve board or plate; S, the valve or openings for the discharge of the water. The journal a on the shaft b of the washer B at the end next the side of the vat or tub is held in a bearing e, which' is permanently fixed to the upper edgel of the board or plate C, so that when the journal-boxes e are raised bymeans of the racksf, pinions g, and crank h the box on the side next the side of the vat or tub will carry up with it the board or plate C, and so bring the lower portion Za of the plate C over the opening S in the side of the tub A, the pressure of the pulp being sufficient to make a tight joint between the plate and the tub.
One end of the washer B is closed. The end next the side of the vat is open and has acircular rim supported by arms. Upon the circular rim fm. there is a projection t', which corresponds with a projection, also marked vl, on the valve board or plate O. The projection z on the rim m of the washer B when the washer revolves rubs against the projection i on the board or plate O,and undueleakage at the joint is prevented by placing a strip of water-tight or other material e, as wide as the two projections 'L' put together, around the lower part of the circle t on the rim m of the washer' and the semicircle t' on the plate, with its ends fast to pins on the upper part of the plate C, as shown in Fig. 4.
Two slides n 'n are made fast to the sides of the vat or tub A, the edges of which are V- shaped, as shown in Fig. 5, or square, as the case may be, to which the ends of the board O are made to correspond and tit, the pieces n being holders and guides to the plate C on its being hoisted from or lowered into the pulp in the vat.
Motion to the washer is given from the main shaft w of the beater, as the case requires provision being' made to allow Ithe washer to rise out of gear when it is lifted by the racks and pinions. i
I do not claim a side discharge of the water, norawasher with one closed and one open end.
I/Vhat I claim is- The combination of the washer B, its journal-box e, and the valve-board C, under a method of construction and operation substantially as above described.
JAMES PIERCY. Witnesses:
WM. M. GooDINe, JOHN H. COCKEEAIR.
