Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
HOWARD (ULL, 0F DEDIIA'M, MASSA@l'lUSETTS.
IMPROVED FOLDING BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,0IS, dated April 252, i862.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that l, HOWARD GILL, of Dedham, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Folding Bedstead, Table, and Trundle-Bed Combined, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beingl had to the accompanying drawings, making apart ot this specification, in whichn Figure l is a vertical section of my invention, taken inthe line :r ot' Fig. 3, and showing the device adjusted as a table; Fig. 2, a vertical section oli' the same, taken in the same li ne Jr, and showing the device adjusted as a bedstcad 5 Fig. 3, a plan or top view ot' Fig. 2.
Similar let rs ot' reference indicate corresponding par i inthe several figures.
This invention consists in combining a bedstead, table, and trundle-bed in such a inanner that the device maybe used in any of the above-named capacities and still be capable of being ooinpactly folded when not in use, and forming while in usc or otherwise an ornamental piece ot furniture.
To enable those skilled in the art to l'ullb' understainl and const ruet my invent ion, l will proceed to describe il'.
A represents a bedstead, which stormed ot two equal transverse parts, l (l, connected together at its side rails, u u, by hinges l) l).
' The part B is provided with a bottoni coinposed of slats c, fitted transversely in it,while the part C has a solid bottom, d. The part B is provided with an adjustable head-board, e, so arranged that it may be raised and lowered vertically, and it is kept in proper position by a dovetail cleat, f, attached centrally and vertically to its outer side, and fitted in a vertical dovetail recess or groove, g, at the center of the end piece, h, of the part B. (See more particularly Figs. 2 and 3.) This headboard e may, when required tor use, be secured at any desired height by a pin or spring arranged `in any proper way, or the friction of the cleatf in the groove g may be sulticient. When thehead-board is not required for use, it is shoved down within the part l-'ot thebedstead, so as to admit ot the part (i being folded over on l, as shown clearly in Fig l. The part C of the bedstead is provided with a lixed toot-board, 71, which, when the two parts ot the bedstead are folded together, iits over the end ot' part l, as also shown in Fig. l.
The bottoni of the part C of the bedstead has two leaves, yL' j, which are attached to it by hinges 7U' 7:, so that they may fold inward or toward cach other and against the bottoni d and form a level surface thereon, and when the leaves are unfolded the leat j rests on slides I, which properly support it, and forms with the bottom d, t-he part on which the lea-t' i rested, a table. This table, it will be seen, is formed when the two parts B C of the bedstead A are folded together, as shown in Fig. l, and when the leaves yij are not in use they are retained in a closed state by a sliding catch, nt, or other proper fastening. To the outer part of C there are attached legs (LX, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
The part B of the bcdstead is double the depth of the part C, and the lower part, n, of B forms a box or receptacle foratrundle-bed, D, which is simply a rectangular box provided with a bottom ot slats, o, and having a receptacle or apartment, E, at one end to receive bed-clothing or other articles, said apartment E being accessible from the outer side of the bedstead by means oli' side doors, p p, in the same and in the side oi the apartment E. To the outer end ot' the trundle-bed D there is attachelfl, by hinges or joints q, a Hap, F,which serves as a cover for the end of the bedstead when in, a folded state, said flap or cover being secured in a proper vertical position by a slidin g catch, o'.
'hen the device is not in use, the two parts of the bedstead are folded together, the trundle-bed D litted in the llower part of B, and the leaves `i 'y' folded down on the bottom d. The device thus adjusted forms an ornamental piece ot furniture, and the legs ax may be made in any suitable chaste forni, so as to give it the appearance ot a sideboard. 'hen a bedstead is required, the two parts B C are unl'olded, the legs a* supporting the part (i and the bottom or leaves -zj ot part B resting on the i'loor. The trundle-bed D, if required, may be drawn out from the lower part ol ll and placed by the side ot the bedstead. i
rThe invention is extremely simple, and may be constructed even in an ornamental manner at a moderate expense. It will prove valuable in those' eases where families of the humble Class are noiprovided with niuoh room and are compelled, as in eties,to make one room answer for a bed-room, parlor, and living-room.
Having thus described myinventiomwhatl Claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl l.l The bedstead A, formed of two parts, B C, connected by hinges and provided, respeeti ively, with an adjustable head-board, e, and a xed foot-board, h, in Connect-ion Withthe folding or hinged leaves ij, attached to the bottom d of the part C of the bodstead, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The Combination of the folding' bedstead A, leaves ij, and trundle-bed D, arranged as herein set forth.
HOW/*ARD GILL.
