a sleeve type pliable plastic pouch having a front and a rear wall heat sealed at the lower end thereof,
a rectangular separator element of relatively stiff yet pliable plastic disposed centrally in the upper portion of said pouch having a dome-shaped central portion holding the front wall of said pouch spaced from the rear wall thereof,
the lower portion of said separator element and its dome being centrally cut-away leaving a pair of laterally spaced prongs and providing said dome with an open bottom,
the upper portion of said separator and said front and rear walls of said pouch being heat sealed together at the top thereof,
an. adhesive on said rear wall of said pouch opposite said separator,
a removable adhesive guard over said adhesive, and
the said rear wall, adhesive and adhesive guard having an aperture therethrough substantially opposite the dome of said separator of sufficient size to accommodate the uro-genital organ of a patient.
Patented Aug. 11, 1970 I INVENTOR. form/e0 J/V/AL W 1 rim/v5) PEDIATRIC URINE COLLECTORS This application is a continuation of application, Serial No. 204,884, filed June 25, 1962, now abandoned.
It has become a routine requirement in most hospitals to take urine samples from infants and small children at six, twelve or twenty-four hour intervals. In the case of infants and small children, it is quite difficult to obtain urine samples, particularly from females. The taking of urine samples by means of catheterization is not practical because of discomfort and the danger of infection.
With the foregoing in view, the primary object of the instant invention is to provide an improved simple and effective pediatric urine collector which is convenient to use, and which eliminates the normal difficulties attendant in taking urine samples from infants and small children.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved pediatric urine collector which may be used in taking urine samples from both male and female infants and small children, and which is particularly effective and simple to use with female patients.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved pediatric urine collector which functions additionally as a container for collected urine during transport and temporary storage in the laboratory prior to testing.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a pediatric urine collec- I tor embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a part side elevational and part vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1,
FIG. 3 is a rear elevational view.
FIG. 4 is a front elevational view of the upper separator insert preferably employed.
FIG. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is a view in perspective indicating the use of a pediatric urine collector embodying the invention on a female patient A suitable separator 20 preferably formed of a semi-stiff yet pliable plastic is generally rectangular in shape and of a width such as will snugly fit laterally within the upper portion of the pouch 11 between the front wall 14 and rear wall 15 thereof when the said pouch 11 is in a generally flattened state or position. The said separator 20 is cut out or bifurcated at its lower end at 200 forming a pair of prongs 201 shaped for easy insertion into the upper end of the pouch 11. The central portion of the separator 20 is formed into an open bottomed dome 202 leaving a depending opening 203 between the prongs 201 at the bifurcated lower end thereof.
When the said separator 20 is inserted with the dome 202 thereof forwardly disposed in the top of the pouch 11 and with the upper straight end portion 204 thereof located parallel to and between the top square-cut end portions 110 and III of the said pouch I], the upper straight end portion 204 of the separator 20 and the upper end portions 110 and- III of the pouch are heat sealed at 13 as indicated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3.
The rear wall 15 of the pouch 11 has its upper portion provided with an adhesive 16 of a type that is non-irritating to the skin. A suitable preferably two piece adhesive guard 17-17 divided into upper and lower sections as illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 is applied over the adhesive 16. The said adhesive guard l7-l7 is stripped from the adhesive 16 immediately prior to the application of the pediatric urine collector 10 to a patient.
The rear wall 15 of the pouch 11, the adhesive 16, and the adhesive guard 17-17 are apertured preferably substantially central of the domed ortion 202 of the separator 20 at 18 to fit over and accommo ate the external genito-urrnary organ of the patient; namely, the penis of the male or the vulva of the female, sometimes termed the uro-genital organs.
The use of an improved pediatric urine collector is illustrated in FIG. 6. The skin of the patient P is thoroughly cleansed and dried around the uro-genital organ. The pediatric urine collector 10 is then removed from its storage container usually a cellophane" bag or the like, not shown, in which the said pediatric urine collector is kept sterile. If the aperture 18 through the rear wall 15 of the pediatric urine collector 10 is not deemed to be sufficiently large, the nurse may enlarge the said aperture 18 sufficiently to permit the said rear wall 15 of the pediatric urine collector to encircle the urogenital organ of the patient. The upper adhesive guard 17 is preferably now removed from the upper portion of the rear wall 15 of the pouch 11, and the said upper portion of the pouch rear wall 15 is adhered to the patients torso just above the uro-genital organ after first disposing the said organ through the said aperture 18 and within the pouch II. The lower adhesive protector 17 is then removed from the rear wall 15 of the pouch II, and the remaining adhesive coated portion of the said rear wall is pressed against and adhered to the patients skin surrounding the uro-genital organ.
The separator 20 prevents the upper portion of the front wall 14 of the pouch 11 of the pediatric urine collector 10 from bearing against and sealing over the vulva of a female patient when said pediatric urine collector I0 is in use. Reasonable movement of the patient will not interfere with the taking of six, twelve or twenty-four hour urine samples.
After a urine sample has been collected, the pediatric urine collector is removed from the patient, and is folded adhesive to adhesive along the line A-A whereupon the urine collected from the patient is sealed within the pouch 11 for transportation to the laboratory for analysis. Just before this sealing of the pouch 11, the separator 20 may be removed therefrom by cutting off the upper heat seal 13.
Although but a single embodiment of the invention has been disclosed and described in detail, it is obvious that many changes may be made in the size, shape, arrangement and detail of the various elements of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

l. A pediatric urine collector comprising:
a,,sleeve type pliable plastic pouch having a front and a rear wall heat sealed at the lower end thereof,
a rectangular separator element of relatively stiff yet pliable plastic disposed centrally in the upper portion of said pouch having a dome-shaped central portion holding the front wall of said pouch spaced from the rear wall thereof,
the lower portion of said separator element and its dome being centrally cut-away leaving a pair of laterally spaced prongs and providing said dome with an open bottom,
the upper portion of said separator and said front and rear walls of said pouch being heat sealed together at the top thereof,
an adhesive on said rear wall of said pouch opposite said separator,
a removable adhesive guard over said adhesive, and the said rear wall, adhesive and adhesive guard having an aperture therethrough substantially opposite the dome of said separator of sufficient size to accommodate the urogenital organ of a patient.

Claims (1)

1. A PEDIATRIC URINE COLLECTOR COMPRISING: A SLEEVE TYPE PLIABLE PLASTIC POUCH HAVING A FRONT AND A REAR WALL HEAT SEALED AT THE LOWER END THEREOF, A RECTANGULAR SEPARATOR ELEMENT OF RELATIVELY STIFF YET PLIABLE PLASTIC DISPOSED CENTRALLY IN THE UPPER PORTION OF SAID POUCH HAVING A DOME-SHAPED CENTRAL PORTION HOLDING THE FRONT WALL OF SAID POUCH SPACED FROM THE REAR WALL THEREOF, THE LOWER PORTION OF SAID SEPARATOR ELEMENT AND ITS DOME BEING CENTRALLY CUT-AWAY LEAVING A PAIR OF LATERALLY SPACED PRONGS AND PROVIDING SAID DOME WITH AN OPEN BOTTOM, THE UPPER PORTION OF SAID SEPARATOR AND SAID FRONT AND REAR WALLS OF SAID POUCH BEING HEAT SEALED TOGETHER AT THE TOP THEREOF, AN ADHESIVE ON SAID REAR WALL. OF SAID POUCH OPPOSITE SAID SEPARATOR, A REMOVABLE ADHESIVE GUARD OVER SAID ADHESIVE, AND THE SAID REAR WALL, ADHESIVE AND ADHESIVE GUARD HAVING AN APERTURE THERETHROUGH SUBSTANTIALLY OPPOSITE THE DOME OF SAID SEPARATOR OF SUFFICIENT SIZE TO ACCOMMODATE THE URO-GENITAL ORGAN OF A PATIENT.
