Cl. 240-52 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A lamp having an elongated arcuate relatively rigid tubular support of a length to extend over the heads of card players seated about a table, with a lamp socket and shade at one end normally projecting downwardly, and a squared shank atthe other end, a C clamp having a squared sleeve on one leg for receiving the squared shank, clamping screws extending through the sleeve for holding the shank in a selected position of adjustment, a clamping screw extending through the other end of the C clamp, and a pivoted operating handle secured by the adjusting screws.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the invention This invention relates to a clamp mounted lamp, and more particularly to a lamp which may be mounted by means of an adjustable clamp on a table, such as a card table.

Description of the prior art SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention has as its primary object therefore the provision of an elongated arcuate support of a length sufficient to extend over the heads of card players seated around a table, provided at one end with a depending light socket and shade to cast a steady light on the center of the table, and a clamp by means of which the lamp may be secured to the edge of the table, or to any other suitable support.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of such a lamp having adjustable means for positioning the light, which may be readily applied to and removed from the table or other support with a minimum of effort and difficulty.

Still another object isthe provision of a clamp member having a pivoted operating handle which facilitates the operation of the clamp, but which when not in use hangs perpendicularly in an out of the way position.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Having reference now to the drawing in detail, the lamp of the instant invention is generally indicated at 10, and consists of an elongated arcuate member 11 which is relatively rigid and comprised preferably of tubular brass or the like. Tubular member 11 consists of a portion which extends substantially vertically, 11a, a substantially semicircular top portion 11b, and a depending upper extremity 11c which terminates in a bulb socket 12 into which a standard electric bulb is inserted, and a frusto-conical shade 13.

A wire 14 supplying current to the lamp extends through the lower end 15 of the tubular member, to the socket. The lamp is adapted to be clamped as by means of a clamping member generally indicated at 20 to a table having a top 21 and legs 22, such as a card table or the like.

Clamp 20 comprises a C-shaped resilient member 23, to the upper leg 24 of which is secured as by welding or the like a rectangular sleeve 25 into which is slidably received a rectangular bar 26, which is in turn welded as at 27 to the lower end of tubular member 11. Internally threaded nuts 28 are positioned on the top of sleeve 25, and contain set screws 29 which may be tightened to clamp bar 26 in a selected linear position of adjustment as indicated by dotted lines in FIG. 2.

The lower leg 30 of C clamp 20 has an opening 31 therein adjacent to which is fixedly secured an internally threaded nut 32 which is engaged by a threaded clamping screw 33. The inner end of screw 33 is provided with a bulb type foot 34 which carries a clamping pad 35. A pin 36 extends through a suitable opening in the lower end of screw 33, and has mounted on its extremities the forked ends 37 of an operating handle 38.

The arrangement is such that when the lamp is clamped to a table as shown in FIG. 1, the light is centered over the table and the shade 13 directs the illumination downwardly in such manner as clearly to illuminate the table from a directly overhead position. The arcuate standard is so arranged as to leave ample clearance for the bodies and hands of the players during play, and affords all of the illumination of a centrally positionedlamp without the inconvenience of a central standard or the necessity for positioning the table directly under a fixedly mounted overhead light.

The slidable bar permits centering of the light, while the clamp 20 permits positioning of the lamp in any desired location on a table, and facilitates ready removal when desired.

The pivoted handle member 38 normally depends in perpendicular position as shown, but may be readily turned to right angled position to facilitate the rotation of screw 33 to clamp and unclamp the lamp from its support.

Obviously, other adjustments are possible, and the lamp may, when desired, be clamped to a door frame or other vertical or horizontal surface as desired.

From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved lamp which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.

While the preferred embodiments of this invention have been illustrated and described, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that changes and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim:

1. A lamp construction comprising in combination a relatively rigid elongated arcuate tube having an upper depending end and a lower end, a light socket carried by said upper depending end, means for supplying electric current to said socket, a bulb in said socket, a C clamp for securing said lower end to a support, a threaded screw extending through one leg of said C clamp, a pin diametrically mounted within and protruding from both sides of said screw, an operating handle pivotally mounted about said pin, a polygonal sleeve carried on the other leg of said C lamp, a corresponding polygonal rod secured to the lower end of said tube and slidably mounted in said sleeve.

2. The structure of claim 1 wherein means are provided for securing said rod in said sleeve.

3. The structure of claim 2 wherein said last mentioned means includes a pair of set screws extending through threaded nuts secured to said sleeve.
