FFICEQ CARL H. VON KLEIN, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
GYNECOLOGICAL STIRRUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,694, dated February 15, 1887. Application filed March 25,1886. Serial No. 196,604. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. VON KLEIN, of Dayton, Montgomery'county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gynecological Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
Th'isinvention has referenceto a contrivance for use by the gynecological practitioner in connection with the gynecological manipulations and operations.
The invention relates to the construction of a foot-rest adapted for ready attachment to the rail of a bedstead or to the edge of a table,
- whereby the patients feet may be supported in the proper position.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one of a pair of my devices, shown as attached to the rail of a bed or similar article presenting its edge vertically; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the device shown as applied to the edge of a table or similar article presenting its edge horizontally; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the movable clamp-jaws, showing the .arrangement of the tighteningcam; Fig. 4, a
transverse section of the same, and Fig. 5 a perspective view of the coupling ends of the stirrup-bar and clamp-shank.
In the drawings, A indicates a portion of a table or similar article whose edge presents horizontally; B, a portion of the rail of an ordinary bedstead, the edge of such rail presenting itself vertically; O, a jawed clamp adapted to engage firmly'with the furniture part to which it may be attached; D, a stirrup-bar projecting outwardly from the clamp; E, the clamp-shank reaching from the clamp outward into engagement with either end of the stirrup-bar; F, the joint of union between the clamp-shank and the stirrup-bar, the same being formed by rabbet-laps, as seen in Fig. 5,
whereby the joint will be secured whether the stirrup-bar forms a direct extension of the clamp-shank or extends at right angles thereto; G, a thumb-screw serving to hold the stirrupbar to the clamp-shank in whichever of its two positions it may be placed; H, a stirrup or foot-piece formed upon the outer end of the stirrupbar; J, the movable jaw of the clamp, the same being fitted to slide upon the clampshank, so as to adapt itself approximately to different thicknesses of attaching parts; K, a thumb cam pivoted in the movable jaw; L, a pad disposed within the movable jaw and adapted to engage its face against the piece to which the device is clamped; M, a connecting block pivoted to the pad and reaching outward through a mortise in the movable jaw, and presenting an outer face against the periphery of the cam; N, a rib formed upon the side of the clamp-shank and engaged by a side groovein the mortise ofthe movablejaw where 6 thesame engages the clamp shank; O, facings of chamoisskin or other soft material applied to the clamp-jaws to prevent the marring-of furniture, and P recesses in clamp jaws to clear edge-moldings on furniture.
In using these devices two of them are attached to the bedstead or table, as the case may be, at-such distance apart as will place the patient s feet in proper position. In case the devices are attached to the bed-rail or other article presenting its edge vertically, the stirrup-bar will be so attached to the clamp as to project at right angles to the opening between the clamp-jaws, as shown in Fig. 1, while if the stirrups are to be attached to a table-top or other article presenting its edge horizontally the stirrup-bar will be so attached to the clamp asto project outwardly parallel to the opening in the stirrup-clamp, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The union-joint F and screw G permit the ready attachment of the stirrupbar in either of these positions, and also permits of the parts being disjointed for the purpose of'more compact storing when not in use. The shoulders of the rabbets of the joint form 0 positive stops or thrust-bearings for the parts in either position of the bar, thus preventing accidents and relieving the screw of all but shearing strains. The movable jaw J slides very loosely upon the-clamp-shank, so that it 9 5 may be slid along thereon and be adjusted approximately to the thickness of the article with which the clamp is to engage, and when the strain is brought upon the movable jaw of the clamp it will cant somewhat upon the rco clamp-shank and take a frictional bite upon the rib N with sufficient force to prevent the further movement of the movable jaw away from the fixed jaw. The oscillation of the thumb-cam, serving to press the pad firmly against the face of the article to be clamped, and the pad being pivoted to the connectingblock, is at liberty to adjust itself to inequalities of surface. The connecting-block loosely engages the axis of the thumb-cam through the medium of a slot which prevents the connecting-block becoming separated from the other parts Without preventing the proper inward and outward movement of the block.
I claim as my invention" 1. A gynecological apparatus consisting of two foot-pieces, each provided with an openjawed clamp, combined substantially as set forth, and adapted for engagement in adjustable relation to each other with furniture, for the purpose specified.
2. A gynecological apparatus consisting of two stirrup-bars provided with stirrups or foot-pieces and two open-jawed clamps connected to said stirrup-bars by joints provided with stops or thrust-bearings adapted to support said stirrup-bars rigidly in a position either parallel with or at right angles to the jaw-openings of said clamps, combined substantially as set forth, and adapted for en gage ment in adjustable relation to each other with furniture, for the purpose specified.
3. In a gynecological stirrup, the combination of an open-jawed clamp adapted for attachment to the edge of furniture, a clampshank projecting therefrom, a stirrup-barprovided with a foot-piece and engaging said clamp shank by rabbetlaps forming stops or thrust-bearings, and a thumb'screw uniting the stirrup-bar to the clamp-shank, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. In a gynecological stirrup, the combination, with a clamp, a stirrup-bar, and a footpieee, of a thumb'cam pivoted to one jaw of the clamp, a connecting-block, and apad pivoted to the connecting-block, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a gynecological stirrup, the combination, with a clamp, a stirrupbar, and a footpiece,of the rib N and the slidingjaw fitted with tightening mechanism and adapted for canting engagement with said rib, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
