UNITED ST TES A PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI SMITH, OF HIGHLAND, OHIO.
oEsK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,474, dated March 15, 1887. Application filed October 21, 1886. Serial No. 216,835. (No model.)
of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apro pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in desks, the object of the same being to provide a desk with an adjustable top, which will serve as a book-support,
and which may be adjusted at any suitable angle with respect to the stationary top; and
2o to this end my invention consists in the construetion and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illus- ..rate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a desk, showing my improvement applied thereto. the supplemental or adjustable top being folded down upon the stationary top. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the top elevated, orin a position for receiving a book for reading purposes. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the line 00 a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through the line 1114 of Fig. 2.
A refers to the side pieces of the desk, which are recessed horizontally, as shown at a a, for the reception of a sliding board, B. Above this sliding board and u-ponthe upper edges of the side pieces, A A, is rigidly secured by any suitable means astationary top, 0, which is preferably inclined upwardly. To the upper end of this inclined stationary top is secured a transverse strip or board, D, which extends above the same, and is provided with suitable grooves or recesses, d, which form a pen-rack,
and a circular or other shaped recess, d, for
the reception of an ink-well.
.The stationary top 0, hereinloefore referred to, adjacent to the transverse board D, is provided at its edges with recesses G, and to the top adjacent thereto is attached rubber blocks a, which will prevent the adjustable top E making a noise when lowered.
The stationary top 0 has attached to its outer edges recessed guide-bars F F, which are rigidly secured thereto, and centrally the stationary top is provided with a slot, f, above which is secured a plate, 9, having a series of perfo rations, with which asuitably-constructed pivoted catch attached to the adjustable top will engage.
The adjustable top E has secured to its lower edges side plates, e, to the lower edge of which are pivoted blocks h, having inwardly-turned ends which engage with a recess in the sides of the stationary top 0, so as to permit the lower edge of the top E to he slid' over the top O without being elevated.
The top 0, at the limit of the movement of the top E, is provided with recesses i, which extend from such a point under the board D, where plates Z, having eyes formed in the lower ends, are secured. To these plates are suitably-pivoted bars L L,'the opposite ends thereof being pivoted to plates l,,secured to the movable top E. The bars L L are adapted to lie within the recesses 2', when the movable top is adjusted so as to lie parallel with the stationary top 0. The movable top is provided near its lower edge with a projecting rail, 6, which will serve to hold books or papers in place.
The catch G, which is pivoted within a recess in the lower edge of the top E, is provided with a portion which forms ahand-hold, which is also provided with a block of leather or other suitable material which will prevent noise or the contacting of the metallic parts against each other.
,When the parts of the desk are organized as shown in Fig. 1, the same may be used as an ordinary fiat or inclined-top desk, and when a reading-desk is desired the top E may be elevated, as shown, so as to support the book in an inclined position before the reader.
Owing to the pivoted bars L, the inclination of the top may be varied without changing the distance of the center portion of said top from the eye of the-reader. By providing the sliding board B a supplemental top can be provided, so as to support paper or bookswhen the desk is used for copying purposes.
I am aware that it has been heretofore pro- ICO posed to so construct a desk that the front part of the desk-top can be adjusted at an angle with the top of the frame on which it rests and with the stationary rear part of said top, and this I do not claim; but I am not aware that prior to myinventiou adesk having astationary top extending from front to rear and ontirely covering the desk has been provided with an adjustable top adapted to fit snugly upon the front part of the stationary top, or to be adjusted at an angle with said stationary front part.
I claim- 1. In combination with a desk having a stationary top which is provided with a central perforated plate, recessed pieces attached to the side edges of the stationary top, said top having recesses z i, a supplemental top, E, having pivoted blocks h h, attached near its front edge, and a central catch, G, and bars L, pivotally attached to a stationary and supplemental top, the parts being organized substan' tially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a desk having stationary top 0, a supplemental top, E, adapted 25 to be adjusted at an angle therewith, and a sliding support, 13, attached to the side pieces of the desk under the stationary top, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a desk having a sta- 3o tionary top, the recessed pieces attached to the side edges thereof, a supplemental top pivotally connected to the stationary top by bars L L, and sliding blocks h h, pivotally attached to the side of the supplemental top, so as to 5 engage with the recessed side pieces, and a catch for maintaining the supplemental top in an elevated position, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
