Patented Dec. 14, 1971 2 Sheets-$heet 1 Patented Dec 14, 1971 2 Sheets-Sheet APPARATUS FOR NIPPING AND SUPPLYING ONE OR MORE YARNS TO THE PROCEEDING PRO'CIESS This invention relates generally to a textile machine and more particularly it relates to an apparatus for supplying one or more yarns, threads, filaments, strands and the like (hereinafter called a yarn) to a process succeeding thereto at definite speeds by nipping or pinching the yarn between two rollers.
Generally in textile machines such as a twisting machine, drawing machine and the like, there is widely used an apparatus in which a roller (hereinafter called a pressure roller) is engaged with another roller (hereinafter called a rotating roller) so as to nip the yarn between the two rollers and to advance it forward to a next succeeding process. A mechanism in which a pressure roller is engaged with a rotating rgller has: been proposed wherein the pressure on both rollers is imparted by a resilient or expansible material such as a spring and cushion provided with one of the rollers for variation of the pressure, or other reasons in place of the use of gravity of the roller thereon. When the rollers stop supplying or transferring the yarn from its source due to some reason, for instance, occurrence of breakage of the yarn supplied by the rollers, it is necessary that one roller should be kept apart from the other roller to prevent an end of the yarn broken from entangling around the rollers. In addition, when one process of a winding operation ends and then another new winding operation begins, the pressure roller must be engaged with the rotating roller once again in order that the yarn not transferred may be transferred to the next process. As mentioned above, the pressure roller must be frequently engaged with the rotating roller.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide an apparatus for facilitating and ensuring separation of the pressure roller from the rotating roller in engaged condition during the rotation thereof.
It is another object of this invention to provide an apparatus which is not complex and compact in construction and moreover not expensive to produce, these and other objects of this invention are obtained by providing an apparatus which comprises an arm holding a pressure roller to be engaged with a rotating roller, said arm being mounted rotatably on a shaft, a lever pivoted swingably in a direction of the side of the arm on a pin secured to the arm, a collar secured to the shaft on the front side of the arm, said collar having a ratchet which is capable of gearing with a pawl provided at the lower end surface of the arm facing to said ratchet, and a pressure means to press and engage the pressure roller with the rotating roller thereby the pressure roller being able to be engaged and disengaged with the rotating roller.
Other features and advantages of the apparatus in accordance with the present invention will be better understood as described in the following specification and appended claims, in conjunction with the following drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary elevation cross section view of an apparatus in accordance with the invention, showing the state in which the pressure roller is disengaged from the rotating roller,
FIG. 2 is a side elevation view of the apparatus in accordance with the invention, showing the state in which the pressure roller is engaged with the rotating roller,
FIG. 3 is a perspective view schematically showing a pawl geared with a ratchet in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawings, a pressure roller l is mounted rotatably on an axle 2 secured to the upper end of an arm 3 through bearings 4 and the arm 3 at the lower end thereof is also mounted swingably on a shaft 5 and held thereby. A rtating roller 6 is mounted on a rotating shaft 7 which is in parallel relationship with the shaft holding the pressure roller l and is driven by a driving mechanism not shown. On the front surface of the arm 3 at the middle portion thereof is provided a pair of brackets 8, 8 between which a pin 9 extends. A lever 10 is supported swingably in a direction of the side of the lever 10 by the pin 9. At the upper end ofthe lever 10 is secured to a handle 11, and on the other hand at the lower end of the lever 10 is formed a pawl 12 which is in face-to-face relationship with and capable of engaging with a ratchet 13 formed on the inner surface of a collar 14 which is secured to the shaft 5 by a screw 21 in contact with the lower end of the arm 3. At the lower end of the arm 3 slightly spaced from the shaft 5 is provided a bore 15 facing another bore 16 provided at a back lower end of the lever 10. In both of the bores 15, 16, a single helical coil spring 117 is disposed which always pushes and presses the back lower end of the lever so that it can be easily engaged with the ratchet 13 facing the pawl 12. Another collar 18 is secured to the shaft 5 by a screw 22 on the back side of the arm 3. This second collar 18 is provided along the axis thereof with a bore 19 whose diameter is larger than that of the shaft 5 so that an annular space 20 is provided between the inner surface of the bore 19 and the outer surface of the shaft 5. A torsion spring 23 is provided in the annular space 20 enclosing the shaft 5. One end of the spring 23 extends into an opening 24 provided at the lower end of the arm 3 thereby being secured to the arm 3 while the other end of the spring 23 extends into another opening 25 provided at the inner wall of the bore 19 in the collar 18 thereby being secured to the collar 18. As a result of this, the pressure roller 1 is forced to engaged with the rotating roller 6 by means of the spring 23 while the pawl 12 is not engaged with the ratchet 13. The torque of the spring 23 that is, the: pressure of the pressure roller 1 can be adjusted to suit the operation conditions by axially positioning the collar 18 as desired.
When the pressure roller 1 is caused to be disengaged from the rotating roller 6, the lever 10 is inclined in the direction shown by an arrow A, and at the same time held up in the direction shown by the other arrow A by the handle 11. Then the handle 11 is released from the operater's hand and the spring 17 presses against the lower end of the arm 3 so that the pawl is engaged with the ratchet 13. As a result, the pressure roller 1 is kept apart from the rotating roller 6 at a definite position.
On the contrary when the pressure roller 1 is returned to a position in which it contacts the rotating roller 6, the lever 10 is inclined in the opposite direction shown by an arrow A and at the same time the pawl 12 is released from the ratchet 13. Then the pressure roller 1 is engaged with the rotating roller 6 under pressure control of the spring 23.
Those skilled in the art will readily recognize that the pressure roller in accordance with this invention can be easily engaged or disengaged with the rotating roller during the operation and the apparatus is not complex and compact in con struction.
