This invention relates tov certain new and useful improvements in baling-presses designed more especially for compressing hay for baling, and while it pertains more particularly to horizontal togglepresses, some of the novel features will be found fully as applicable to other styles.
The invention aims at simplicity and cheapness of eonstructionand ease and efficiency in operation.
To these ends and to such others as the in vention may pertain, the same consists in the particular construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then specifically defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a top plan of the press constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a plan view with parts in a horizontal section and parts removed to show interior of press. Fig. 4 is a side ele vation of the press, part in vertical section, with parts removed. Figs. 5 and 6 represent, in detail perspective, the follower and long levers. Fig. 7 represents detailed views of clamps.
Referring to the details of the drawings, A designates a suitable frame or sill supporting the base-plate B, which forms the bottom of the fecd-box and press chamber, the former of which is also provided with two sides and top, supported by the cross-bars a and uprights b, the upper ends of which uprights are preferably joined by brace or tension rods 0, which serve to prevent the spreading of the same during the operation of the press. This guide-plate is guided by the strips f, attached to the base-plate B, and having their forward ends preferably rounded, as shown. To this guide-plate, preferably within a recess, 5 therein, are pivoted upon a common pivot the long levers E, the pivoted ends of which are halved out, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, to allow the said levers to move on the same horizontal plane. The shoulders formed by halving serve as stops to limit the inward movement of the long levers, and may thus indicate when the plunger has moved its full stroke. The free ends of these levers are bifurcated, and in these bifurcations arejournaled the pulleys h.' The sides and top of the press-chamber are made removable, and are secured in position in the following manner: Secured to the frame A in the proper position are the pieces K, formed with sockets 0, which engage the extended ends p of thecleats L on the side M of said chamber, it being understood that the two sides are constructed and secured in position in the same manner. The top of this chamber is also provided with cleats 0', connected at one end by the cross-bar 3, while the other ends of said cleats removably engage socketst in the rear cross-bar of the top of the feed-box. To hold the sides and top in position I use two clamping'bars, O P,.the former provided at each end with a lug, a, which lugs embrace the crossbar s on the top of the chamber and a cross-bar, 12, secured to the rear face of the rear end of said chamber, while the other clamping-bar, (shown in detail in Fig. 7,) is formed with five lugs, to, the outer ones of which are slightlylonger than the others, and engage the spaces formed between the cleats L on the sides of the chamber, while the other lugs engage the spaces between the cleats r on the top and between said cleats and the sides. It will be observed that the plate or block I) extends through the end of the feed-box, so that the long levers connected thereto will play inthe end of the box, instead of through the sides ofthebox,when the follower is thrown forward to, compress the hay in the presschamber.
The operation is simple. Power is applied to the rope d, which will cause the levers and plunger to assume the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The clamping-bars O P are then removed and the top of the pressehamber taken off. The material to be baled is then put in and pressed in the feed-box till the press is full. The top of the press-chamber is then replaced, the clamping-bars O Psecured in place,and power applied to the rope H. A continuance of the power forces the parts into the position indicated by full and dotted lines in Fig. 2. The short levers coming in contact with the forward ends of the guide-strips), serve to limit their movement, and thus indicate that the material is pressed. The clamping-bar P and the sides M are then removed, and the wires or ties run through the grooves m a and around the bale and made fast, when the other clamping-bar and the top are removed, and the bale is then free to be taken out and the operation repeated.
Material may be fed directly into the feedbox by making its top removable, and other changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
' Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I now claim is v y 1. The combination,with the follower-block and guide-plate attached thereto, of the guidestrips for said plate, the long levers pivotally secured to said guide-plate, and the short levers pivotally connecting said levers and.
frame and limited in their movement by said strips, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the frame, the follower-block, and the guide-plate attached thereto, of the long levers pivoted at one end to said guide-plate, the short levers pivoted at one end to said frame at a point intermediate of the outer and inner ends of the two long levers and at the other end to said levers, pulleys carried by the free ends of said long levers, a stop to limit the inward movement of the long levers, and the operating-cord connecting said free ends, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the press-chamber, the covered feed-box between the press-chamber and operating-levers, the follower-block normally lying within the feed-box and having a plate, D, extending therefrom, the long levers pivoted to said plate to work through the end of the feed-box, the short levers pivot-ed at one end to the frame of the machine at a point between the outer and inner ends of the long levers and at the other end to the long levers, and an operating-cord connecting the free ends of the long levers, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the press chamber having removable top and sides, of a clamping-bar having lugs to embrace said sides and to secure said sides in place, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the feed-box provided with crossbar having sockets, as described, of a removable top to the press-chamber provided with cleats engaging said sockets and clamping-bars for holding said top in position, as set forth.
6. The combination, with the frame pro- -vided with sockets 0, braces l, and cross-bar c, and the feed-box provided with sockets t, of the removable sides and top to the presschamber, provided with cleats to engage said sockets, and the removable clamping-bars O 1?, provided with lugs, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
