Abstract

The device comprises a sleeve wrapper for a coiled product such as a coil of electrical wire or cable. Such products are normally wrapped in a paper or cardboard sleeve open at the ends. Instructions, etc., are printed on the sleeve. However, the sleeve has a tendency to slide off the product during handling and shipping. The present device comprises a sleeve wrapper having a movable wall portion which can be pushed into the coil to lock the sleeve against axial movement off the coil.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a sleeve wrapper which can be locked on to a coil product against accidental removal or loss.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a lock for a sleeve wrapper which is an integral part of the wrapper and requires no separate assembly.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a sleeve wrapper having a locking action which is simple and easy to use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a sleeve wrapper having a locking action which is simple in construction and easy and economical to manufacture.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, my invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts, more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more particularly defined in the appended claims.

FIG. 1 is a plan view of a blank for forming the sleeve wrapper embodying my present invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the finished sleeve prior to mounting on a product;
FIG. 3 is a transverse section of the sleeve shown in FIG. 2 prior to locking on a product;
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 after locking; and
FIG. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 on FIG. 4.
Certain products such as clothes line cord, window sash cord, electric wire and cable, and similar products, are conventionally packaged by coiling the product, elongating the coil by pushing inwardly at the center, and sliding a sleeve over the coil. Technical data, instructions, and other material are printed on the sleeve. The coil extends from each end of the sleeve permitting quick access to the product. It has been found that the sleeves have a tendency to slide off the coils during shipping and handling. The present invention is designed to provide a sleeve wrapper which can easily be locked in place and cannot be removed accidentally from the coil.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the sleeve of the present invention is formed from an elongated rectangular blank of any suitable material such as paper, cardboard, metal, or plastic. The blank 10 is formed with transverse score or fold lines 1 1 which form a large rectangular panel 12 at one end, a narrow rectangular panel 13 adjacent to the panel 12, another large panel 14 adjacent to the panel 13, another narrow panel 15 adjacent to the panel 14, and finally another large rectangular panel 16.
Now when the blank 10 is folded along the lines 11, it will form the sleeve 17 illustrated in FIG. 2. The sleeve 17 can be made in any desired dimensions. The blank 10 forms the sleeve 17 by positioning the panel 14 to form the bottom of the sleeve as seen in FIG. 2. The panels 13 and 15 form the sides extending integrally from the bottom 14. The panels 12 and 16 overlap each other to form the top, the panel 16 being over the panel 12 beneath it. The panel 16 is provided, during the forming of the blank 10, with a central opening 18, now disclosing the panel 12 beneath it.
The finished sleeve is thus formed with a single layer of material at the bottom and sides and a double fold at the top. The sleeve is closed by applying a thin strip of adhesive 19 along the free edge of the top 16 and adhereing it adjacent the fold connection between the side 13 and the bottom panel 12 beneath the top. This leaves a panel 12 extending across the width of the sleeve beneath the top 16.
Now referring to FIG. 3, the coiled product 20 is now inserted into the sleeve so that it bears against the sides 13 and 15 and extends from the open ends. It should be noted that with this arrangement the panel 12 extends above the coils 20.
The packer now inserts a finger through the opening 18 in the top 16 and enga es the panel 12 through'this opening. Pressure on the pane 12 will swing it downwardly so that its free edge will snap past one side of the coils with a snap action caused by the inherent resiliency of the blank material. The panel 12 will now be angled downwardly from its hinged edge at the top of the side 13 into the center area of the coil 20. As can be seen in FIG. 4, the outer free edge 21 of the panel 12 will bear against the lower edge of the coil 20 and will be unable to swing back upwardly. This locks the sleeve 17 on the coil 20 as shown in FIG. 5. Since the panel 12 is angled down as shown in FIG. 4, it is impossible to slide the sleeve 17 off the coil 20 at either end.
Thus by the simple expedient of providing a double top panel and an opening 18 in the upper panel, means are provided for effectively locking a sleeve to a coil. The cost of manufacture is not much more than a conventional sleeve, the blank merely requiring the additional panel 12. Also, the operation of pushing the panel 12 into locking position is simple and easy and adds little to the assembly cost.
Therefore, at a small additional cost, I have provided a sleeve wrapper for a coil of material which is locked to the coil and will not accidentally slide off. It also cannot be deliberately pulled off without destroying the wrapper. Other advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to a person skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A sleeve wrapper for a coil of wire or the like comprising a rectangular sleeve member having side walls and top and bottom walls, said top wall comprising an inner and outer wall, the free edge of said outer wall being adhesively attached to one side of said inner wall, said sleeve member being open at the ends, whereby said sleeve member may be slipped over a coil of wire or the like to hold the coil in oval position extending from each end of said sleeve member, and means for locking said sleeve member against axial movement on the coil, said inner wall comprising said locking means.
2. A wrapper as in claim 1, wherein said outer top wall is provided with a central opening, whereby said inner top wall may be manually depressed into locking position.
3. A sleeve wrapper for a coil of wire or the like comprising a rectangular sleeve member having side walls and top and bottom walls, said sleeve member being open at the ends, whereby said sleeve member may be slipped over a coil of wire or the like to hold the coil in oval position extending from each end of said sleeve member, and means for locking said member against axial movement on the coil, said sleeve member comprising a rectangular blank of material folded to form a rectangular bottom, narrow side walls extending integrally from each side edge of said bottom, and a rectangular top extending integrally from the top edge of each side wall, said tops overlapping, the outer top wall being adhesively connected at its free edge to one side of said lower top wall.
4. A wrapper as in claim 3, wherein said outer top wall has a central opening for manually depressing said lower top wall.
5. A wrapper as in claim 3, wherein said lower top wall is depressable into the coil to lock said sleeve against axial movement.
6. A wrapper as in claim 5, wherein said outer top wall has a central opening for manually depressing said lower top wall.

Claims (6)

1. A sleeve wrapper for a coil of wire or the like comprising a rectangular sleeve member having side walls and top and bottom walls, said top wall comprising an inner and outer wall, the free edge of said outer wall being adhesively attached to one side of said inner wall, said sleeve member being open at the ends, whereby said sleeve member may be slipped over a coil of wire or the like to hold the coil in oval position extending from each end of said sleeve member, and means for locking said sleeve member against axial movement on the coil, said inner wall comprising said locking means.
2. A wrapper as in claim 1, wherein said outer top wall is provided with a central opening, whereby said inner top wall may be manually depressed into locking position.
3. A sleeve wrapper for a coil of wire or the like comprising a rectangular sleeve member having side walls and top and bottom walls, said sleeve member being open at the ends, whereby said sleeve member may be slipped over a coil of wire or the like to hold the coil in oval position extending from each end of said sleeve member, and means for locking said member against axial movement on the coil, said sleeve member comprising a rectangular blank of material folded to form a rectangular bottom, narrow side walls extending integrally from each side edge of said bottom, and a rectangular top extending integrally from the top edge of each side wall, said tops overlapping, the outer top wall beIng adhesively connected at its free edge to one side of said lower top wall.
4. A wrapper as in claim 3, wherein said outer top wall has a central opening for manually depressing said lower top wall.
5. A wrapper as in claim 3, wherein said lower top wall is depressable into the coil to lock said sleeve against axial movement.
6. A wrapper as in claim 5, wherein said outer top wall has a central opening for manually depressing said lower top wall.
