Description

K. G. SMITH.
SPEGULUM.
No. 367,248. Patented July 26, 1887 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
KNIGHT (9.. SMITH, or rmncnron, MISSOURI.
SPECULUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 367,248,:1ated July 26, 1887.
i Application filed May "1, 1887. Serial No. 237,408. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
.Be it known that LKNIGHT G. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Princeton, in the county of Mercer and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speculums, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference .being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which I Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a speculum embodying my improvements. Fig.
2 is a side view showing the upper valves raised. Fig. 3 is a rear view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line a: a: of Fig. 2.
My'invention relates to the class of specu-v lums, and it consists in the constructions and combinations of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim. 7
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and indicate how I carry out the same.
In the said drawings, A represents the lower section of the instrument, having at its rear the upwardly-extending sides B, united together at their tops by a crossbar, G, and
forming a frame Within which the upper valves, D, and their connections are suitably mounted, the bowl of said section A being made very deep, so as to increase the reflecting-surface, and consequently the amount of light concentrated on the internal parts.
The valveslD, which form the upper section of the instrument, are preferably two in numberand have sockets a formed in their rear.
The valves D have u pwardly-extending ears f, which are loosely connected with a bar or shaft, E, through the center of which is made a perforation or slot adapted to receive the lower end of an adj usting-screw, F, the said screw being provided with collars g and it above and below the shaft or bar, so that during the rotation of said screw the valves are drawn backward and swing upon the conical eccentrics to cause an elevation and spreading of their forward ends. The valves D are secured on the shaft E by collars E and screws in the ends of the shaft, so that the long valves can be removed and short ones put in their places.
Within the upwardly-extending sides B is a suitable three-sided sliding frame, G, havtical adjustments before noted.
From the above description it will be observedthat in operating my speculum the adjusting-screw F is moved to cause a spreading and elevation of the forward ends of the upper valves. If it be desired to increase the capacity of the device, the desired object is obtained by turning the adj usting-screw I to cause the frame G and its attached valves to be vertically moved.
Having thus described my invention, what-- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The-lower section having the upwardlyextending slotted sides B, and the frame G within said sides, in combination with the eccentrically-moving valves D, the bar or shaft connecting the upper ends of said valves, a
rockshaft, J, and the screw F, for elevating and spreading the forward ends of said valves, substantially as herein described.
2. The lower section having the upwardlyextending frame at its rear, and the upper valves, in combination with the frame G and the adjusting-screw I, substantially as herein described.
ICO
3. The lower section having upwardly-0y justingscrew F, engaging said bar and passing tending slotted sides, the frame G within said i through a threaded opening on the rock-shaft, IO sides, having the rock-shaft J, and the adjnsti substantially as herein described. ing-serew I, in combination with the valves 1), T 1 I y the bolts 0, passing through the slotted sides 7 KB IGIH SMIFH' and frame, the conical eccentrics on said bolts i \Vitncsses: and fitting sockets in the lower ends of the I L. W'. BRANNON, upper valves, the bar or shaft E, and the ad- I G. R. THOMPSON.
