6 Claims, 8 Drawing figures PATENTEDAUG 15 i972 SHEET 2 [IF 3 FRANK TOROK ATI'OFA/fX ALARM TYPE DOOR LOCK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION As is well known to those versed in locks, it has been found extremely difficult in the past to associate alarm actuating means with lock tampering so that an alarm is actuated at an intermediate stage of lock operation by unauthorized personnel improperly or inefficiently operating a lock. Such lock mechanism affords the obvious advantage of alarm and warning prior to the opening of a door or of a closure, as for capture or deterring a burglar.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an important object of the present invention to provide improvements in door locks which heighten security by actuating an alarm or signal at an intermediate stage of lock operation when the lock is being improperly or inefficiently operated.
It is still a further object of the present invention to provide an alarm actuating type door lock having the advantageous characteristics mentioned in the preceding paragraph, which is extremely simple in construction and durable and reliable throughout a long useful life.
It is a more particular object of the present invention to provide a door lock construction of the type described wherein improper or inefficient operation effects not only alarm actuation, but double bolting of a door to further resist unauthorized forcible entry.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a door lock wherein a unique bolt construction permits of a single bolt being selectively employed both as a dead bolt or night latch, and also as a spring latch, for greater or lesser security, as desired.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent upon reading the following specification and referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a material part of this disclosure.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangements of parts, which will b exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope will be indicated by the appended claims.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now more particularly to the drawings, and specifically to FIGS. 1 and 2 thereof, a door is there generally designated 10, and is provided with a transverse through opening or hole 11 for mounting of the lock mechanism generally designated 12.
More specifically, the lock mechanism 12 includes a cylinder lock body 15 having an open ended internal hollow 16 of cylindrical configuration, for a purpose appearing presently. The cylinder lock body 15 may have one end, say the exterior end, provided with an enlargement or circumferential flange 17, while a removable ferrule or cap 18 is secured on the inner end, as by a fastener or set screw 19. An outer circumferential flange 17 and door 10, and suitable securing means, such as tie bolts 21 may extend through internally threaded lugs 22 on body 15 to secure the latter and outer housing 20 in position on the door 10.
Interiorly of the cylinder lock body 15, within the cylindrical bore 16, there are a pair of cylinder lock plugs 25 and 26, which may be of the tumbler, wafer or other suitable type, and located in end to end, independently rotatable aligned relation with respect to each other. In the conventional manner, the cylinder lock plugs 25 and 26 are provided with key slots, and adapted to receive a single key when their key slots are in alignment with each other. That is, the external or outer end of the outermost cylinder lock plug 26 is exposed or presented exteriorly through the outer end of cylinder lock body 15 for receiving a properly cut key 27.
The cylinder lock body 15 is formed with a hole or opening 28 which communicates from the interior of cylindrical bore 16 radially outwardly through the lock body 15 to the exterior thereof. An insulating body or operating member 29 is located in the opening 28 an freely shiftable radially therein by the extension of wafers or tumblers of plugs 25 or 26. That is, the operating member 29 is resiliently urged radially inwardly by suitable means, such as a conductive resilient member or leaf 30 which is anchored, as by a suitable fastener 31, exteriorly to one location of the cylinder lock body 15 and extends therefrom over the operating member 29. Spaced over the resilient leaf 30 is a conductive arm or tab 32 fixedly secured in position, as by a fastener 33 anchored to the lock body 15. More specifically, the fastener 33 fixes the conductive strip 32 in position, and suitable insulators 34 are provided to maintain the leaf 32 electrically insulated from the lock body 15. Upon insertion of a properly cut key 27 into the cylinder lock plugs 26 and 25, the tumblers or wafers thereof are radially projected to shift the operating member radially outward and effect electrical contact between strips or leaves 30 and 32. Thus, the strips or leaves 30 and 32 define a switch which is closable by insertion of a key 27 into the cylinder lock plugs 26 and 25. Further, insertion of the key 27 only into the outer cylinder lock plug 26, as when the latter plug is out of ing switch 30, 32, and the switch would remain open with the key fully inserted, as illustrated in FIG. 2. However, by the procedure of lock picking, the operating member 29 would be shifted radially outwardly and maintain the switch 30, 32 closed for a substantial period of time, so as to indicate the existence of a burglary attempt, as will appear more fully hereinafter.
An interior lock housing is generally designated 40, being suitably fixed to the inner surface of door and having an opening 41 in alignment with the door opening 11. A manually rotatable knob 42 is carried on the housing 40, and suitable holding means 43 may be provided on the knob 42 for retaining the latter against rotation. Suitable shank means, say an elongate noncircular member or shank 44 may extend between the lock body and knob 42.
More specifically, the elongate shank or rod may have one end anchored in ferrule or cap 18 for operative rotative driving connection to the inner lock plug 25. The other end of shank 44 may be nonrotatably fixed to knob 42, as by fastener 45. As is conventional, the shank, bar or rod 44 may be operatively connected in end-to-end alignment with the cylinder lock plug 25 by suitable means providing a desired freedom or play between rotation of the shank and cylinder lock plug.
Also located in the interior housing 40 may be an alarm, say an audible alarm 46, or other suitable signal, and power means 47, such as a battery, for operating the alarm. A switch 48 may also be located in the housing 40 for electrically connecting the alarm 46 and power source 47.
Mounted interiorly of the door 10, extending transversely of and intersecting with the door opening 11, is a bolt housing or guide 50. The elongate bolt housing or guide 50 intersects with the door opening 1 1, and extends therefrom through the adjacent door edge, as best seen in FIG. 3. That is, the bolt housing or guide 50 may be of generally rectangular cross-sectional configuration having elongate lower and upper side walls 51 and 52, generally vertical side walls 53 and 54 extending between the lower and upper side walls, and an inner end wall 55 extending across the bolt housing inner end between the side walls 51, 52, 53 and 54. The outer end of the housing 50 opens through the adjacent edge of door 10.
Extending between the bolt housing side walls 53 and 54, and rotatably journaled therein, is a bushing 56 having a non-circular internal configuration for conformably receiving the shank 44. A generally rectangular block, body or bolt 57 is slidable in the housing or guide 50, adjacent to the open ends thereof, for shifting movement between the fully retracted position of FIG. 3 within the housing and the fully extended position of FIG. 5 projecting exteriorly through the open housing end. A linkage operatively connects the bushing 56 with the bolt 57 and includes a crank arm 58 projecting radially from the bushing, and a link 59 having its opposite ends pivotally connected to the crank arm 58 and bolt 57, respectively, as by pivot pins 60 and 61.
bolt 57 in its fully retracted position, for interposition between the lug 63 and bolt 57 of a coil compression spring 64. By this means, the bolt 57 is resiliently urged outwardly to project beyond the door edge and thus function as a spring latch. Further, the bolt 57 may be releasably retained in an intermediate latching position, as shown in FIG. 4, by the provision of a spring pressed ball or detent 64 located for operative association with and projection into a hole 66 formed in the bolt housing wall 50.
In the fully extended bolt position of FIG. 5, it will there by seen that the linkage 58, 59 has swung past or beyond dead center, and into abutting engagement with stop member or lug 63. Hence, in this condition, the bolt is positively retained in its fully extended position, so as to define a dead boltor night latch.
The lock mechanism 12 also includes a hollow housing or cover generally designated 70, located on the outer side of door 10 in covering relation with respect to housing 20. The cover 40 is hingedly connected at its upper end for swinging movement into and out of covering relation with respect to the housing 20 and its contained lock body 15 and flange 17. More specifically, the hollow cover 70 may be provided in its upper end region with a laterally extending shaft 71, which shaft extends rotatably through a pair of laterally spaced journal hearings or lugs 72 fixedly secured to and projecting outwardly from the front side of door 10. As best seen in FIG. 2, the rotary shaft 71 may be provided on one side with a flat 73, to define a cam, as will appear more fully hereinafter. Thus, the cover 70 is swingable about the axis of shaft 71 from its solid line position covering the housing 20 to a raised position exposing the housing 20.
In addition, the cover 70 is provided on its front wall with a mounting member 75, within which is mounted an additional lock body 76 having a generally cylindrical bore 77 receiving a cylinder lock plug 78. Thus, the cylinder lock plug 78 is axially rotatable in the cylinder lock body 76; and, is axially aligned with the cylinder lock plugs 26 and 25. Further, the cylinder lock plug 78 has a key slot rotatable with the cylinder lock plug for alignment with the key slots of cylinder lock plugs 25 and 26. In this condition of alignment of the key slots of cylinder lock plugs 25, 26 and 78, a single key 27, suitably proportioned and cut, may be inserted simultaneously through all of the cylinder lock plugs 25, 26 and 78, as indicated in solid lines in FIG. 2. In this condition, the shank 44 may be rotated to open the door 10.
Advantageously, the cover 70 is provided at one edge, say its lower edge with a bayonet slot 80, and an arm 81 is pivoted, as by a pin 82, to the housing 20 for swinging movement in the slot 80. Thus, the arm 81, according to its position in the slot 80, positively holds the cover 70 against its swinging movement about the axis of shaft 71, or permits upward and outward swinging movement of the cover.
The door 10 may be provided with an additional through hole 83 opening outwardly proximate to the shaft 71 and opening inwardly proximate to the switch 48. An actuating pin or rod 84 is slidable in the hole 83 having one end engageable with the shaft 71, and provided with an enlargement or collar 85 against which bears a coil compression spring 86 to urge the pin outwardly into engagement with the shaft 71. The inner end of actuating member or pin 84 is located adjacent to the switch 48 and is shiftable inward to operate or close the switch. That is, upon upward and outward swinging movement of cover 70 to rotate the shaft 71 counterclockwise, as seen in FIG. 2, the actuating member 84 is shifted inwardly to close switch 48 and energize alarm 46, as will appear presently. Thus, upon tampering of an unauthorized person and upward swinging of the cover 70, the alarm or any other operating means is actuated.
Also, see FIG. 7, the actuating pin 84 is provided with a tapering enlargement or cam 88, and the door is provided with an additional bore or hole 89 extending generally horizontally from the swinging door edge toward and opening into the hole 83. An auxiliary or additional bolt 90 is slidably shiftable in the hole 89 having one end 91 located for bearing engagement with the cam-like collar 88, and having its other end 92 proximate to the swinging edge of the door 10. The bolt 90 is shiftable between the retracted position shown in FIG. 7, and an extended position with the bolt end 92 projecting beyond the door edge. Suitable resilient means, such as a coil spring 93 may be employed to urge the bolt toward its retracted position. However, upon inward shifting movement of the actuating pin 84, as described above, the cam-collar 88 serves to shift the bolt 90 to its extended position against the force of spring 93, providing additional bolting action to resist opening of the door.
While the electrical circuitry is believed evident from the foregoing description, a schematic is shown in FIG. 8 to illustrate one operative circuit of the present invention. An alarm 46, which may be of any desired type, visual, audible, or other, is electrically connected by one conductor 95 to one side of an energy source or battery 47. The switch 48 is electrically connected on one side through conductors 96 and 97 to the other side of the alarm 46. The other side of the switch 48 is connected by conductors 98 and 99 to the other side of the battery 47. Thus, the switch 48 is connected in series with the alann 46, through conductors 97, 96, 98 and 99, across the battery 47 for energization of the alarm upon closure of the switch 48, as by actuating member 84.
In addition, the switch 30, 32 is connected on one side by a conductor 100 to the conductor 97 and thence to the alarm 46, while the switch is connected on its other side through a conductor 101 to the conductor 99 for connection to the battery 47. Thus, the switch 30, 32 is electrically connected in series with the alarm 46 to close a circuit through the switch and alarm across the battery 47. It will also be apparent from the foregoing description that the switch 32, 30 and the switch 48 are connected in parallel with each other for independent operation of the alarm.
From the foregoing, it is seen that the present invention provides a unique lock construction which is of ex tremely high security and otherwise fully accomplishes its intended objects.
Although the present invention has been described in some detail by way of illustration and example for purposes of clarity of understanding, it is understood that certain changes and modifications may be made within the spirit of the invention. For example, while the lock construction of the instant invention has been illustrated and described for use in a door, it is appreciated that certain advantageous features of the instant invention may be equally well employed in other locks, for example in a drawer, cabinet, padlock, or other.
What is claimed is:
l. A door lock comprising a cylinder lock body having a generally cylindrical bore, mounting means for mounting the body with the bore extending transversely of the door, a pair of separate cylinder lock plugs in end-to-end independently axially rotatable relation within said bore, the outer of said plugs having an outwardly facing key slot, a rotary knob for mounting on the inner side of the door, shank means extending between the inner of said plugs and said knob for transmitting rotative movement therebetween, a bolt for sliding movement in a plane generally perpendicular to the axis of shank means rotation, linkage means operatively connected between said shank means and bolt to shift the latter upon shank means rotation, electric switch means operatively associated with at least one of said plugs for closure in an intermediate position of key insertion, tampering thereby being adapted to actuate an alarm connected to said switch means, and a cover for mounting on the exterior of a door over the outer end of said outer plug, an additional cylinder lock body on said cover having a generally cylindrical bore in alignment with the bore of said first mentioned cylinder lock body, an additional cylinder lock plug axially rotatable in said additional cylinder lock body in alignment with said pair of cylinder lock plugs, cover mounting means for swingably mounting said cover on a door, and alarm actuating means operatively as sociated with said cover to actuate an alarm upon swinging of the cover, whereby a single properly cut key is insertable into said additional lock plug and said pair of lock plugs for withdrawing said bolt with said cover in its covering relation.
2. A door lock according-to claim 1, said linkage means comprising a crank arm on said shank means for rotation therewith, and a link pivotally connected between said crank arm and bolt for shifting the latter between a retracted open position and an extended locked position.
3. A door lock comprising a cylinder lock body having a generally cylindrical bore, mounting means for mounting the body with the bore extending transversely of the door, a pair of separate cylinder lock plugs in end-to-end independently axially rotatable relation within said bore, the outer of said plugs having an outwardly facing key slot, a rotary knob for mounting on the inner side of the door, shank means extending between the inner of said plugs and said knob for transmitting rotative movement therebetween, a bolt for sliding movement in a plane generally perpendicular to the axis of shank means rotation, linkage means operatively connected between said shank means and bolt to shift the latter upon shank means rotation, electric switch means operatively associated with at least one of said plugs for closure in an intermediate position of key insertion, tampering thereby being adapted to actuate an alarm connected to said switch means, and a cover for mounting on the exterior of a door over the outer end of said outer plug, an additional cylinder lock body on said cover having a generally cylindrical bore in alignment with the bore of said first mentioned cylinder lock body, an additional cylinder lock plug axially rotatable in said additional cylinder lock body in alignment with said pair of cylinder lock plugs, cover mounting means for swingably mounting said cover on a door, an additional bolt for mounting on a door, and additional bolt operating means. associated with said cover to throw said additional bolt upon swinging of the cover, whereby a single properly cut key is insertable into said additional lock plug and said pair of lock plugs for withdrawing said first mentioned bolt when said cover is in its covering relation.
4. A door lock according to claim 3, in combination with alarm actuating means operatively associated with said cover to actuate an alarm upon swinging movement of the cover.
5. A door lock comprising a cylinder lock body having a generally cylindrical bore, mounting means for mounting the body with the bore extending transversely of the door, a pair of separate cylinder lock plugs in end-to-end independently axially rotatable relation within said bore, the outer of said plugs having an outwardly facing key slot, a rotary knob for mounting on the inner side of the door, shank means extending between the inner of said plugs and said knob for transmitting rotative movement therebetween, a bolt for sliding movement in a plane generally perpendicular to the axis of shank means rotation, linkage means operatively connected between said shank means and bolt to shift the latter upon shank means rotation, electric switch means operatively associated with at least one of said plugs for closure in an intermediate position of key insertion, tampering thereby being adapted to actuate an alarm connected to said switch means, said linkage means comprising a crank arm on said shaft means for rotation therewith, and a link pivotally connected between said crank arm and bolt for shifting the latter between a retracted open position and an extended locked position, and stop means located proximate to said linkage means to limit movement of the latter to a past dead center position with said bolt extended into a dead bolt position.
6. A door lock according to claim 5, in combination with releasable holding means for holding said bolt in an intermediate partially extended position with said linkage means before dead center, and resilient means associated with said bolt to urge the latter from its open retracted position to its partially extended position, whereby said bolt in said partially extended position provides a spring latch.

Claims (6)

1. A door lock comprising a cylinder lock body having a generally cylindrical bore, mounting means for mounting the body with the bore extending transversely of the door, a pair of separate cylinder lock plugs in end-to-end independently axially rotatable relation within said bore, the outer of said plugs having an outwardly facing key slot, a rotary knob for mounting on the inner side of the door, shank means extending between the inner of said plugs and said knob for transmitting rotative movement therebetween, a bolt for sliding movement in a plane generally perpendicular to the axis of shank means rotation, linkage means operatively connected between said shank means and bolt to shift the latter upon shank means rotation, electric switch means operatively associated with at least one of said plugs for closure in an intermediate position of key insertion, tampering thereby being adapted to actuate an alarm connected to said switch means, and a cover for mounting on the exterior of a door over the outer end of said outer plug, an additional cylinder lock body on said cover having a generally cylindrical bore in alignment with the bore of said first mentioned cylinder lock body, an additional cylinder lock plug axially rotatable in said additional cylinder lock body in alignment with said pair of cylinder lock plugs, cover mounting means for swingably mounting said cover on a door, and alarm actuating means operatively associated with said cover to actuate an alarm upon swinging of the cover, whereby a single properly cut key is insertable into said additional lock plug and said pair of lock plugs for withdrawing said bolt with said cover in its covering relation.
2. A door lock according to claim 1, said linkage means comprising a crank arm on said shank means for rotation therewith, and a link pivotally connected between said crank arm and bolt for shifting the latter between a retracted open position and an extended locked position.
3. A door lock comprising a cylinder lock body having a generally cylindrical bore, mounting means for mounting the body with the bore extending transversely of the door, a pair of separate cylinder lock plugs in end-to-end independently axially rotatable relation within said bore, the outer of said plugs having an ouTwardly facing key slot, a rotary knob for mounting on the inner side of the door, shank means extending between the inner of said plugs and said knob for transmitting rotative movement therebetween, a bolt for sliding movement in a plane generally perpendicular to the axis of shank means rotation, linkage means operatively connected between said shank means and bolt to shift the latter upon shank means rotation, electric switch means operatively associated with at least one of said plugs for closure in an intermediate position of key insertion, tampering thereby being adapted to actuate an alarm connected to said switch means, and a cover for mounting on the exterior of a door over the outer end of said outer plug, an additional cylinder lock body on said cover having a generally cylindrical bore in alignment with the bore of said first mentioned cylinder lock body, an additional cylinder lock plug axially rotatable in said additional cylinder lock body in alignment with said pair of cylinder lock plugs, cover mounting means for swingably mounting said cover on a door, an additional bolt for mounting on a door, and additional bolt operating means associated with said cover to throw said additional bolt upon swinging of the cover, whereby a single properly cut key is insertable into said additional lock plug and said pair of lock plugs for withdrawing said first mentioned bolt when said cover is in its covering relation.
4. A door lock according to claim 3, in combination with alarm actuating means operatively associated with said cover to actuate an alarm upon swinging movement of the cover.
5. A door lock comprising a cylinder lock body having a generally cylindrical bore, mounting means for mounting the body with the bore extending transversely of the door, a pair of separate cylinder lock plugs in end-to-end independently axially rotatable relation within said bore, the outer of said plugs having an outwardly facing key slot, a rotary knob for mounting on the inner side of the door, shank means extending between the inner of said plugs and said knob for transmitting rotative movement therebetween, a bolt for sliding movement in a plane generally perpendicular to the axis of shank means rotation, linkage means operatively connected between said shank means and bolt to shift the latter upon shank means rotation, electric switch means operatively associated with at least one of said plugs for closure in an intermediate position of key insertion, tampering thereby being adapted to actuate an alarm connected to said switch means, said linkage means comprising a crank arm on said shaft means for rotation therewith, and a link pivotally connected between said crank arm and bolt for shifting the latter between a retracted open position and an extended locked position, and stop means located proximate to said linkage means to limit movement of the latter to a past dead center position with said bolt extended into a dead bolt position.
6. A door lock according to claim 5, in combination with releasable holding means for holding said bolt in an intermediate partially extended position with said linkage means before dead center, and resilient means associated with said bolt to urge the latter from its open retracted position to its partially extended position, whereby said bolt in said partially extended position provides a spring latch.
