SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,900, dated November 8, 1887.

Application filed March 26, 1887.

Serial No. 232,520. (ModeL) pivot, and a spring having a closing action upon the loop or hand piece; and the invention consists in a novel construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

The invention is mainly designed to be applied to chests or trunks, the spring in the handle operating to keep the loop or hand piece pressed close against the side of the chest or article to which the plate carrying the loop-piece is secured, so that in case of the chest or article being tipped on end the looppiece will be prevented from swinging out and from having the whole weight of the chest or article thrown upon it and exposingit to breakage, as so often occurs in the handling of such articles or packages by railroad men. 2V hen using the handle to handle the chest or pack age, the loop-piece is readily raised, but sosoon as released springs back to its normal position against the side of the chest or article.

The special construction and combinationof parts in a handle of this description, as hereinafter described, combine simplicity with efliciency and durability.

Reference is to be had to' the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a front view of a handle embodying my invention as applied to the side of a chest, trunk, or other article, shown only in part. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the improved handle,and Fig. 3 is a central transverse section of the same.

A is the plate, which carries the swinging loop or hand pieoeB of the handle, and which may be secured to the side, 0, of the chest or other article by screws b, or otherwise. This 7 plate A is constructed with a cross-concave,' 0,

in its back, intermediately of its height, the same forming a convex projection on the front of the plate; and said plate is furthermore cast with partitions d d at a suitable distance apart across the concave c, and with a stud, e, on one side of said concave between the partitions d d. The partitions d d are perforated to form bearings for a spindle, pin, or pintle, D, and the stud or projection 6 forms a catch for an intermediate loop or portion, f, of a spiral spring, S, to engage with. This spring, commencing, say, at its middle or loop f, where it engages with the stud c on the plate, is coiled around the pin or pintle D in reverse directions between the bearing strips or partitions d d, and its ends made to engage with the pin or pintle-as, for instance, by entering them within a longitudinal groove, 9, in the pin. Said pin or pintle D is free to turn in the bearing-strips d d,and projects at its opposite ends beyond said strips, such projecting ends h It being made flat and angular for engagement of the loop or hand piece B with them. The loop-piece B of the handle is constructed with inwardly-projecting pivot or trunnion-like arms 7111 from opposite ends of it on its inner side, which arms have their hearings in the concave c outside of the partitions d d. Slots 7." k are made in the inner ends of these arms 2' t, corresponding in shape to the projecting ends it h of the pin or pintle D, so that the loop-piece B may be readily slid or slipped to its place to engage with the ends it h, whereby, on raising the loop-piece B, it will turn the pin or pintle against the tension of the spring S till said loop-piece is arrested by lips or projections m m on the front of the plate. Upon releasing hold of the looppiece B, however, then the spring S immediately acts to close it flat down against the side of the chest or article and to hold it closed.

The connection of the spring S, as herein described, at its center with the plate A and at its ends with the pin or pintle D, gives a steady and uniform action on the pin throughout its length, and provides for the easy and quick fitting of the parts together, while the 1oop-piece B,by the slots k k in the ends of its trunnions t 3, further facilitates the fitting of the whole together or detachment of the parts when required.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In trunk and other like handles, the combination, with the plate A, having a concave, c, perforated partitions d d, forming bearings, and a stud, e, on its back, of the pin or pintle D, the loop or hand piece B, engaging with the ends of said pin outside of the partitions d d, and the spiral spring S, conneeted at its opposite ends with the pin or pin tle D, and constructed with a center loop, f, adapted to engage with the stud a, substantially as shown and described.

2. The loop or hand piece B, having trun- I5 nions 2'12, provided with slots k k in their ends, in combination with the pin or pintle D, hav ing flattened ends h h, adapted to engage with the slotted ends of the trunnions, as described, the spring S, and the plate A, essentially as 20 specified.
