Abstract

A cover for a Mayo Stand, comprising an elongated bag of woven or non-woven fabric or plastic sheeting having affixed to the bag area designed to constitute the instrument-supporting surface a sheet of ''''non-skid'''' material such as foamed plastic. The cover can be supplied initially in a folded and cuffed condition so that it may be applied to the stand with a minimum of handling so as to maintain the sterility of all exposed surfaces.

I NVEFVYUR. RICHARD E- ERICSON WM M A TTORNEV MAYO STAND COVER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Normal operating room technique requires that all upper portions of the stand or table on which instruments are placed (commonly known as Mayo Stand) should be covered with a sterile sheet of some kind to constitute a sterile field with the least possible exposure of non-sterile parts of the stand. A flat sheet or drape may serve the limited purpose of providing a sterile table surface and may cover part of the table support but the stand and support are not enclosed and there is danger of the sheet or drape being displaced and/or or instruments slipping off the stand. The cover of this invention, being in the form of a bag, encloses the entire stand (except for the floor-engaging parts); it cannot readily be displaced in any direction, and it is provided with a non-skid instrument-supporting pad for additional convenience and safety.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 represents a plan view of the cover, laid out flat, with parts broken away;
FIG. 2 is a vertical section on the line Il-II of FIG. 1, the thickness of the cover material being exagerated for purposes of illustration;
FIG. 3 represents a perspective view of the cover in place on a Mayo Stand, and
FIG. 4 represents a perspective view of the cover, folded and cuffed, as supplied to the operating room.
Referring to the drawings, the stand cover may conveniently be made from a flattened plastic tube having a bottom wall 1 and a top wall 2, the tube being cut to a suitable length (e.g. 5 feet) and sealed transversely at one end 3 to form a long bag, open at the end 4. The width of the cover is determined by the width of the Mayo Stand Tray (5 in FIG. 3), the cover being wide enough to slip readily over the tray and its supporting attachments. The length of the cover should be sufficient to enable it to enclose not only the tray 5 but also a substantial proportion of the post 6 which supports the tray, as shown in FIG. 3.
A special feature of the cover is the rectangular pad 7, cemented or sealed to the top wall 2 of the bag near its closed end 3, said pad being of a size somewhat smaller than the tray and being so located on the bag surface that it can be reliably positioned within the boundariesof the tray. The pad 7 is of suitable sterilization non-skid material such as urethane foam. Instruments placed on the pad will not slip or slide and can be picked up, particularly by gloved fingers, much more easily than instruments on a hard smooth surface.
Prior to use, the cover, with pad attached, can be folded from its closed end 3 in the form of a small rectangle, the open end 4 being turned back or cuffed as shown at 8 in FIG. 4 the folded cover being shipped and kept sterilized in an envelope, not shown. In applying the stand cover to the Mayo Stand, the gloved hands of the user are slipped into the pocket of the cuff, the cover is placed on and around the free end of the stand and is unfolded as its drawn over the stand and its post 6, the cuff 8 being eventually straightened out at the bottom. Thus, no exposed part of the cover, in the position of FIG. 3, has any need to contact any unsterile part of the stand, and the entire surface of the cover and its pad constitutes a sterile field, assuming careful handling by the user.
What I claim is:
l. A cover for an instrument stand having a horizontally disposed tray and a vertical support therefor, said cover comprising an elongated flat bag of sterilizable plastic sheet material, said bag having a closed end and an open end, the bag in flattened form having a width greater than the width of the tray to be covered and a length substantially greater than the length of the tray, and a pad of non-slippery material attached to an outer surface of the bag adjacent its closed end, said pad being of a size to overlie a substantial proportion of the area of the tray and terminating a substantial distance from the open end of the bag.
2. A cover according to claim 1 in which the pad has an exposed surface of foamed plastic.
3. A cover according to claim 2 in which the pad is constituted by a sheet of foamed polyurethane.
4. A cover according to claim 1 in which the length of the bag is such that the bag can cover the tray and a substantial proportion of the tray support.

Claims (4)
