- MARIHELEN M. COPELAND A TTURNEYS COMBINED BED FRAME WITI-I STORAGE COMPARTMENT This invention relates to bed frames and more particularly to a combined bed frame and storage compartment.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a combined bed frame and storage compartment that is interchangeable with existing bed frames with or without head and/or footboards.
It is another object of the invention to provide an adjustable bed frame with storage compartments that can be adjusted so in width and/or length to be adaptable to different size beds.
It is another object of the invention to provide a combined bed frame and storage compartment which may be adapted to replace side rails for head and footboards.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a combined bed frame and storage compartment for beds which will be supported on wheeled supports.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a bed frame with storage space in the nature of a skeleton frame with parts thereof adjustable to support the different size spring devices and mattresses.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a combined bed frame and storage compartment that is formed of parts that are readily adjustable and may be made of natural or man made materials, easy to assembly and adjust, has adjustable end hooks, assembly screws, wheel supported, replaces bed frames and/or side rails, strong and steady to support by itself and independently of any head and foot connecting boards.
For a better understanding of the invention reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a top perspective view of a combined bed frame and storage compartment with a head board and a foot board attached thereto and a mattress overlying the frame and storage compartments.
FIG. 2 is a top plan view with the mattress removed and as viewed generally on line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is an exploded top perspective view of the wheels in a leg supported frame with the storage compartments attached, except for one being removed to illustrate its use and with one of the end board adjustable brackets exploded and removed from one end of the frame.
FIG. 4 is a side elevational view of the combined bed frame and storage compartment.
FIG. 5 is an end elevational view thereof with an illustration in dotted lines showing the manner in which the storage compartments are pulled outwardly from the side of the frame to have access thereto.
Referring now to the FIGS., represents the combined bed frame and storage compartment embodying the features of the present invention. As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a headboard 11 is connected to one end of the frame and a footboard 12 is connected to the other end of the frame. The frame is adapted to support a mattress 13 independently of the headboard as in the usual manner with bed frames of this type. The combined bed frame and storage compartment is thus a composite unit.
This composite frame 10 comprises two side rails 16 and 17 of angle iron section opposing each other throughout the length of the frame. On each end of side rail 16 and 17 is an extension bar 18 having attaching bracket 19 secured to its end by which the end boards may be attached. This extension bar 18 has a series of holes 21 for receiving a bolt and nut assembly 22 on the outer side of each rail to hold the bar 18 in its extended and adjusted position. The attaching plate 19 has a pair of spaced elongated holes 24 for receiving threaded projections 25 of a hook plate adaptor 26 having hook extensions 27 for attachment to a hook-receiving plate usually provided upon a headboard or footboard for receiving the side rails of an ordinary bed. By securing the hook plate 26 the hooks 27 may be placed in the proper position to receive the board hook-receiving plate. Either one or both of the extension bars 18 can be adjusted or extended upon the side rails 16 and 17 and thus give added length to the frame 10. With the screws 22 being set these bars 18 will be rigidly held upon the side rails 16 and 17. Extending perpendicularly from the frame at each end of the side rails 16 and 17 and rigidly fixed thereto is a leg 28 having a caster wheel 29 whereby the bed frame with all parts assembled can be supported upon the floor without headboard or footboard attached. The bed frame 10 supported either upon the headboard and footboard in the usual manner or by reversing the adaptor the boards may be supported upon the frame 10.
Extending laterally from the undersides of the side rails 16 and 17 rigidly affixed thereto are transverse channel section pieces 32 which are flanged to slidably accommodate the storage bins with an interconnecting member 33 having adjusting holes 34 for receiving screws 35 to hold the transverse channel piece 32 at their inner ends and to provide a laterally extending assembly at each end of the framethat is adjustable in length to provide for different width beds, both assemblies at the opposite ends of the frame beingadjustable and thus allow the frame to be laterally adjusted at opposite ends.
The channel guide pieces 32 face inwardly and are respectively rigidly connected to the ends of the side rails and to the lower flange of these pieces 32, the legs 28 and casters 29 perpendicularly depend.
Intermediate the length of the frame 10 and opposing the channel guide pieces 32 are flanged l-section pieces 36 that are welded at their outer ends to the underside of the side rails 16 and 17 and are adjustably interconnected by an interconnecting member 37 having adjusting holes 38 and similar to the members 34. The width of the bed can accordingly be adjusted as above described by changing the connections of the member 37 with the inner ends of the flanged I-section pieces 36.
The lower flanges of the channel shaped pieces 32 and of the l-section pieces 36 provide a support for outwardly extending flanges 41 and 42 provided on the opposite ends of a storage bin 43. These storage bins can he slid inwardly over the flanges of these pieces and retracted from the sides of the bed frame. Laterally spaced hand hold openings are provided on the forward face of each bin 43. Thus in a manner as illustrated in FIG. 5, the bins 43 can be slid inwardly or outwardly along the lower flanges of the pieces 32 and 36.
It should be apparent that a compact and efi'rcient assembly has been provided by uniting the ends of the side rails with the storage bin guide pieces. The upstanding flanges on the side rails serve to confine the side edges of the bottom spring mattress. The guide pieces 32, 36 and their interconnecting members 33 and 37 provide in effect rigid laterally extending assemblies that can be adjusted in length for different width beds. The storage bins or drawers 43 can be made from sheet metal or even molded from plastic and can be pulled laterally and even removed if desired to provide ready access to the contents stored therein.
All parts of the bed frame may be made of various natural or man made materials, singularly of standard shapes and with various parts welded or bolted together to make a composite and rigid construction. The storage bins or drawers can be made of various natural or man made materials.
It should be apparent that this bed frame can be used with or without the extension bars 18 and supported by itself on its leg 28 with the bars 18 either retracted or even removed from the ends of the bed frame. The extension bars 18 and their attaching plates 19 need only be used when the bed frame is to be supported upon head and/or foot boards. Hook plate adaptors, 26, need be used only when replacing existing side rails. The bed frame can also be used with or without the storage bins 43.
This bed frame with storage compartments is designed as a skeleton frame work to support an existing bed, spring and mattress. The extension bars 18 allows the bed to be adapted for different length springs and mattresses and can be adapted to support the frame in its entirety upon the head and foot boards are reversed so as to allow the head and foot boards to be supported fully upon the frame. Thus the'frame is adjustable in width and/or length and to almost indefinite variations in width and/or length of existing bedding. The side rail extension bar hooks make the bed frame adaptable as a support to all conventionally designed bedding whether used with or without decorative headboards and/or footboards. This bed frame with storage, as opposed to other storage beds can be used interchangeably with any and all frames which support movable beds and/or bedding.
