SAMPLE SHOW-CASE FOR WALL-PAPER, 80G.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,589, dated December 13, 1887.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Livingston and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sample Show-Cases for Wall-Paper, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to .sample show-cases for wallpaper and analogous materials; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of the same, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved sample show-case. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, showing the curtain closed thereagainst. A indicates the frame-work of the case, having suitable feet, a a, and a divisional partition, a. In the front portion of the said case shoulders a are formed, in which vertical standards B B are secured, having arms I) mounted thereon and hinged thereto by means of slotted washers b, having intersecting strips of metal arranged intermediate of each of the said washers, the said strips of metal 2) having projections b formed with slots which engage with the vertically-arranged strip I), having a flange in its central portion, whereby the washers are held in position and are allowed to slide up and down upon the central standard in accommodation to the pressure exerted from the top. By means of the arrangement of the slotted washers between the arms friction of one arm upon another is prevented, and one of the arms may be thereby opened without disturbing the one nextbelow or above, as may be desired.

At the upper portion of the casing doors C G are hinged, which, when closed, are adapted to be engaged by a spring locking-arm, 0, engaging with each and projecting from the top portion of the case. When the'arms are inelosed within the case, the doors 0 O are closed andsecuredbyaspringsecuring-arm,c. When the said arms are opened and turned outwardly from the case, the said doors 0 are also opened, so as to permit the arms to have an uninte'rrupted swing at their hinged points.

At the lower portion of each side of the case two wire arms are secured, the. said arms 0 being supported by rests 0 secured to the side of the casing. These arms form guards, against which the paper rests when swung out to its fullest extent. Mounted in connection with these rests c, and having an operating-handle, c projecting outwardly from one side of the casing, is a bracing rod, G, passing through the interior portion of thecasing and formed with shoulders terminating in a curved outer portion adapted to be turned down against the paper supported by the hinged arms, and thereby press the same outward to be inspected. The top portion of the casing is also provided with pivoted arms D D, upon which the paper may be placed from the rolls and inspected at this point also. .Also arranged on the top portion of the case are two wire frames, D, adapted to hold bouquets or potted flowers.

The rear portion of the case is provided with a lower cupboard, E, having a single door, E, and above the cupboard E a recess or space is provided for the reception of books or any other articles desired to be placed therein. Above this recess a series of pigeon-holes, FF, are formed, which are adapted to receive rolls of wall-paper and borders, and are provided with a drop-door, F, as shown in Fig. 3, which is adapted to be locked shut by a spring-arm, f, secured to the interior of the case, and when lowered can be used as awriting desk.

When the hinged arms carrying the samples of paper to be displayed to View are folded in and the doors 0 O closed,it becomes necessary to cover the face-surface of the said paper to prevent the same from becoming soiled and injut-ed. To accomplish this I provide a curtain, G, which is mounted upon a spring-actuated roller, G, situated at the lower portion of the case. The said curtain G is'provided with an edge binding strip, G which rides in grooves or ways 9, formed in the sides of the case and in the inside portions of the doors 0.-

The arms I) may be made as long or as short as necessary for the purpose, and any number thereof may be used, as may be desired. Upon these arms strips of wall-paper are adapted to be placed, the borders ranged upon the top portion thereof, and which may be turned out at different angles to display several different kinds of paper at the same time. By this means the design and effect of different papers, together with their borders, for side walls and ceilings may be inspected at one and the same time, and their complementar effect thereby produced.

' he casing is adapted to be made of light construction, is readily handled and easily operated, strong and durable, and cheaply manufactured.

The novelty and utility of my improved case or cabinet being obviously apparent, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.

It is obvious that many minor variations in the construction and arrangement of the several parts may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing in the least from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In ashow-case, the combination of the case proper, having shoulders a, forming recesses in the upper part of the said case, the upper covering of the case, the standards B, mounted between said shoulders and the upper covering, the arms b, having slotted washers b, mounted on said standards, the intermediate strips of metal, I), having slotted projections b and a flanged strip, b", mounted in connection with the case and with which the slotted projections b of the strips 1) engage, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the case having the grooves 9 formed near the outer edges of the inner sides thereof, and the shoulders a forming openings or recesses, and the top covering, of the standards B, mounted between said shoulders at and the top covering and carrying swinging arms adapted to be turned within the case, the hinged doors 0, having grooved projections secured thereto and adapted to close the openings formed between the shoulders a and top covering, and the spring-actuated curtain G, adapted to be raised from the lower part of the case, engaging with the grooves g and the grooved projections of the doors 0 when closed, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with the case having the recesses in the front upper portion of each side thereof, the standards B, mounted in said recesses, the swinging arms b, mounted on the standards B and adapted to be folded within the case, and the bracing-arm C, j ournaled in the sides of the case and adapted to be turned to press the paper supported on the swinging arms outward, substantially as described.

4. The combination,with the case A, having standards B mounted in the upper front recesses formed therein and carrying swinging arms b, adapted to support wall-paper, of the guard-arms c and the rests c, secured to the sides ofthe case and supporting the said guardarms, substantially as described.

5. The case A, comprising standards carrying pivoted arms for the display of samples of wall-paper, the arms D, pivoted to the top thereof and extending over the front for the reception of samples, and the arms D, also pivoted to the top and having loops formed with the outer ends thereof for the reception of ornamental fixtures, substantially as described.

6. The combination,with a show-case having an open portion in one side thereof for the reception of swinging arms carrying samples of wallpaper, of the divisional partition a, the cover on the rear side of said casing, having a single door, E, the pigeon-holes arranged above said cover, having the drop-door F, and the spring-catch for locking said doors E and F, substantially as described.
