Abstract

A sanitary napkin having adhesive means at the ends thereof for adhering to the undergarment of the user, thereby securing the napkin without the need for pins, belts or other mechanical appliances.

1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to sanitary napkins, and more particularly to one designed to be worn without mechanical appliances such as pins or belts.

'2. Description of the Prior Art Heretofore many types of absorbent sanitary devices have been provided together with various means for securing them to the person of the wearer. Such devices as have been offered, however, generally rely on belts, pins or other measures for securing the napkin to the person of the user. There is available an adhesively attached lightweight, thin sanitary device designed for slight discharge, but it is not suitably absorbent for nor mal menstrual flow, and at the present time no one has offered a high absorbency sanitary napkin which canbe successfully secured to the person of the wearer without mechanical appliances. There is a real need for such a device, whichwould alleviate discomfort, frustration and annoyance to the wearer.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the invention claimed, a new and improved sanitary napkin is provided having adhesive means for adhering to the undergarment of the user, thereby securing the napkin to the person of the user without the need of pins, belts or other mechanical devices.

It is, therefore, one object of this invention to provide a new and improved sanitary napkin.

Another object of this invention is to provide a sanitary napkin which is for all purposes invisible in outline by providing a means for attachment which is unobtrusive. i

A further object of-this invention is to eliminate discomfort to the wearer through chafing and abrading of the skin caused by mechanical attachments.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a sanitary napkin having adhesive tabs at the ends thereof for readyfattachment to the usual undergarments of women without piercing or tearing of the undergarm ent, and which can be worn on the garment at all times without the use of belts or bands.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a sanitary napkin with adhesive attachment means which is superior byway of simplicity, positiveness of operation, and facility and convenience in use.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description proceeds; and the features of novelty which characterize this invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TI'IE DRAWING The present invention may be more readily described by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a sanitary napkin with the undergarment of the wearer, embodying the features of this invention;

FIG/2 is an exploded inverted view illustrating the identifying colored strip 11 running longitudinally 2 components of the sanitary napkin pictured in FIG. 1; FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the sanitary napkin with its adhesive tabs folded over, ready for packaging; and

FIG. 4 is a side view of the invention being worn by a user.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring more particularly to the drawing by characters of reference, FIG. 1 discloses a perspective view of a sanitary napkin 9 embodying this invention, having protruding from each end thereof a tab 10. The side of the napkin which is uppermost in FIG. 1 is the side to be worn away from the body and is marked with an down the center thereof.

As shown more clearly in FIG. 2, the sanitary napkin 9 comprises a member 12 made ofa soft, pliant, highly absorbent material which will not chafe or bind and is bent over on itself, as shown, to receivebetween its folded over halves 12a and 12b a pressure sensitive adhesive member 13. The ends of member 13 from tabs 10.

Member 13 comprises a section between tabs 10 which has a cut out central rectangular portion 14. As shown, member 13 is formed by two thin, identical, pliable, juxtapositioned paper-like pieces 13a and [3b which extend longitudinally of and within the outline of member 12 with its tabs 10 protruding from each end of member 12. Being formed of two identical pieces 13a and 13b, member 13 forms a strong inner core for the napkin 9, thus increasing its strength and durability and eliminating the possibility of the adhesive tabs being torn from the ends of the napkin. Since the center of member 13 is cut out, it does not interfer with the absorbency of the napkin when the halves 12a and 12b are folded over upon each other.

As shown in FIG. 2, the pressure sensitive adhesive member may comprise two adhesive coated, laminated 'juxtapositioned pieces 13a and-l3b which have adhesive coated sides facing each other. Thus the two strips, when fitted together, form one member 13 and hold halves 12a and 12b together. It should be recognized that if suitable strong paper or other suitable material is provided, mern'ber'13 may be formed of a single member having a single layer of material having adhesive coated flat faces.

As shown in FIG. I, the upper surfaces of tabs 10 are each provided with a tear-away paper strip 15 which is peeled off when the napkin is ready to be used. The opposite outside surfaces of the tabs are covered with a suitable soft fibrous material 16 which may be individually applied or form -a partof the same material which surrounds the napkin. As shown in FIG. 2, the upper surfaces of tabs 10 will be covered by protrusions 16a of material 16.

On the side of the napkin worn away from the body and underneath the surface of material 16 having the colored strip 11 thereon is placed a suitable piece of non-porous material such as a piece of thin plastic which forms a moistureproof shield 17 as is well known in the art. The material 16 when wrapped around the napkin aids in holding it together and forms a soft sanitary wrapping for the hygienic appliance.

Thus, when assembled for packaging and sales, the sanitary napkin 9of this invention appears as an integrated structure shown in FIG. 3 with tabs folded over with the adhesive sides covered by strip 15. It should be recognized that it is only necessary to cover the portion of tabs 10 covered by strips with adhesive material. In this instance material 16 may be tightly wrapped around the halves 12a and 12b of material 12 to hold the two halves tightly together. Material 16 may, if need be, applied with a light coating of adhesive on its overlapping edges to hold the napkin parts together to firmly capture member 13 therewithin.

FIG. 4 discloses the sanitary napkin 9 as worn by a user 18, attached to the undergarments 19 by tabs 10 after strip 15 has been removed from each tab.

Although but one embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or from the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

l. A sanitary napkin comprising:

a pad of pliable porous material,

said pad being arranged for folding one half over on top of the other half to provide an elongated member,

an elongated strip arranged between the over-lapped halves of said member,

said strap being perforated to provide a passage-way between the halves of said member,

each end of said strip being provided with a tab protruding from the ends of said member,

a non-porous sheet covering the outside surface of one side of the overlapped halves of said member,

a porous perforated cover sheet wrapped around said member,

each of said tabs being provided with an adhesive coating on the same side of said tab as the side of said member covered by said non-porous sheet, and a tear-away strip provided on each of the adhesive coated sides of said tabs for removal and attachment to the underclothing of a user. 2. The sanitary napkin set forth in claim 1 wherein said elongated strip is of a rectangular configuration having a rectangular opening extending substantially the full length and width of said configuration within the outline of said porous material.

3. The sanitary napkin set forth in claim 2 wherein said strip comprises a lamination of at least two sheets of material.

4. The sanitary napkin set forth in claim 1 wherein said strip is provided with an adhesive coating along at least the surface of said strip facing the juxtapositioned surfaces of each of the overlapped halves of said material.

5. The sanitary napkin set forth in claim 2 wherein each side of said strip within the outline of the overlapped halves of said member is coated with an adhesive material for aiding in holding the two overlapped halves of said member together and said strip firmly anchored within said member.

6. The sanitary napkin set forth in claim 5 in further combination with a marking strip extending along the length of the side of the member containing the nonporous sheet covering for marking the side of the napkin worn away from the body.

7. The sanitary napkin set forth in claim 3 wherein said two sheets of material are provided with adhesive material on each of their plane surfaces for gripping each other and said overlapped halves of said material to form a napkin of integrated parts.

Claims

1. sA sanitary napkin comprising: a pad of pliable porous material, said pad being arranged for folding one half over on top of the other half to provide an elongated member, an elongated strip arranged between the over-lapped halves of said member, said strap being perforated to provide a passage-way between the halves of said member, each end of said strip being provided with a tab protruding from the ends of said member, a non-porous sheet covering the outside surface of one side of the overlapped halves of said member, a porous perforated cover sheet wrapped around said member, each of said tabs being provided with an adhesive coating on the same side of said tab as the side of said member covered by said non-porous sheet, and a tear-away strip provided on each of the adhesive coated sides of said tabs for removal and attachment to the underclothing of a user.

2. The sanitary napkin set forth in claim 1 wherein said elongated strip is of a rectangular configuration having a rectangular opening extending substantially the full length and width of said configuration within the outline of said porous material.

6. The sanitary napkin set forth in claim 5 in further combination with a marking strip extending along the length of the side of the member containing the non-porous sheet covering for marking the side of the napkin worn away from the body.
