COMBINATION PRlNTlNGv-STANI P.
SPECIFICATION formingh part of Letters Patent No. 377,227, dated January 31, 1888.
Application filed June 7, 1887. Serial No. 240,568.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that Llnorras Ba RrnoLonnW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, inthe county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usel'ul Improvements in Combination Printing-Stamps, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l is a bottom plan view showing my improved combination-stamp arranged as a note or letter-head stamp. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the stamp arranged as a billhead stamp. Fig. 3 shows it arranged as a statement-stamp. Fig. 4 shows the stamp arranged as an envelopestamp. Fig. 5 shows the stamp arranged as a generalbusiness stamp for stamping wrapping paper, cards, &c. Fig. 6 is a detail view ofthe parts forniing the note or letter-head stamp. Fig. 7 is a perspective detail view of the adjustable clamp with its handle. Fig. Sis a plan view of the smaller stamp, which is adapted for small envelopes; and Fig. 9 is aplan view oi'a slight modication of a part ofthe stamp, hereinafter described.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
My invention consists in a new and improved combination changeable rubber stamp, in which the parts forming the one stamp may be arranged to form either a note or letter-head stamp, a bill-head stamp, a statcmentstamp, an envelope stamp, or a general business stamp; and my invention consists, further, in an adjustable clamp for holding the several parts of the stamp together in their operative positions.
My invention will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the main part or section of my improved stamp, this rubber section being mounted on the hard-wood base D, and being molded in one piecc, containing the name ofthe person or firm by whom thestamp is to be used, and the description of the business the person or firm is engaged in, the example here shown (No model.)
bearing the words W1 C. Patterson, Dealer in Dry Goods,Groceries, Notions, Boots, Shoes, Clothing, 850., the inscription of the stamp being ot' course changed to suit the business ot' the person or firm by whom it is to be used. The base-block B is recessed, as shown, along its upper rear edge at C, this recess being preferably square in cross-section,while at its upper right-hand corner the block is cut clear away, as shown at D, for the purpose which will be hereinafter specified.
E indicates the second part or section of my improved stamp, consisting of the longitudinal base-block F, oi' precisely the same length and thickness as the main part or section-block A, and on which is secured the rubber stamp G, formed with, rst, the address, as Salcm, Mass, then a dotted line, and at the end ol" that the numerals of the year, as 188-, while below this first line is formed 011 the stamp a second line comprising, iirst, the capital letter DL and then a dotted line for the name ofthe party to whom the note or the letter is to be addressed.
To arrange my improved stamp as a note or letter head stamp the second part or section, E, is placed below the main section A,which bears the name and description of the business ot' the person or tirm, and this form of the stamp is completed by placing a third part or section, I-I, at the top of the body A. This third section, which I call a logotype/7 consisting i of a base-block, I, which is adapted to iit in the space D at the upper right-hand corneroi' the body A, being of the same thickness as the parts A and E, and which is formed with the extension or arm J, which ts in and fills the longitudinal recess C in the upper rear edge of the said part A, this extension, as well as the recess in which it tits, being square in crosssection, so that when the logotype is fitted in position in thc top of the main section A the two parts forni a practically solid body rectangular in cross-section, the rubber stamp f of the logotype being formed with the words Oflice of.
rIhe two parts A and E and the logotype I having thus been placed together, as shown in Fig. 1, to form a note. or letter-head stamp, being adjusted face downward on a smooth level surface with the marked sides of the several parts toward the person adjusting the 4with the screw end N, which passes freely through an unthreaded perforation in the upper part of the head or clamp end' l?, which is formed with the sliding flat side pieces, Q, which fit on each side of the central piece, L, and on the outer end of the screw end N fits and turns an adjusting thumbnut, R, while to the central piece, L, near the center of the same, is rigidly securedthe handle S, which forms ythe operating-handle of the stamp. The two parts A and E and the logotype I having been adjusted on a level surface face downward to forma note or letter-head stamp, as described, and shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the clamp is placed over them with the clampingjaws thereof inclosing the stamp, and the clamping-jaws are then tightened on the stamp by tightening the thumb-nut R, by which both halves of the clamp are moved to bring'their clamping-jaws together, and the adjusted stamp is thus firmly clamped in the clamp and may be moved and operated by the operating-handle S, while as the part of the clamp to which the handle` itself is secured moves in toward the center as the clamp is tightened it will .be seen that the operatinghandle is always Vover the center of thelength of the clamp. The stamp is then used by patting .it down once or twice upon a suitable inking-pad, and then pressing it down firmly on the article to be marked or stamped, rocking or slightly vibrating the hand, so that every letter will leave a clear impression.
When a bill -head stamp is required, the stamp is removed from the clamp by loosening the clamping-nut R, and the second section, E, having the name of the city and State and the two dotted lines and letter MJ7 as described, is placed above the main part A, and the logotype I, bearing the words Office of,77 is removed and replaced by a logotype, T, of similar size and construction, but formed with the words Bought of, the parts A and E and the logotoype T, thus arranged, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, forming a bill-head stamp. The stamp thus arranged is then firmly locked in the clamp, as above described, and'can be used in the same manner as the note or letter-head stamp before described.
To change the stamp to a statement heading or stamp, it is only necessary to loosen the clamp by loosening the thumb-nut R and inserting or placing above the part E a narrow base-piece, U, the central rubber stamp,V, of which is formed the word Statement,77 when the clamp is again tightened and the stamp thus forms, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, a statement heading or stamp. To use the stamp as a return-stamp for large envelopes and packages, the logotype is placed in position in the upper end of the main part A, but with its stamping-face reversed, so that it will leave no impression on the paper, while a part, A, consisting of a base-piece, the rubber stamp B of which is formed with the letters After ten days return to, is placed above theV main part A, while a base-piece, E', the
rubber stamp F of which is formed with the words Salem, Mass, or with any other address, as'required, is placed immediately below the body part A, the whole being arranged as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, thus forming a stamp for large return envelopes or packages, as shown in the said view, when the stamp thus arranged is clamped in the adjustable clamp, as described.
To employ the stamp asa general-business l stamp for stamping wrapping-paper, cards, Src., all that is necessary is to remove the section having the words After ten days return to, leaving the stamp, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, when the clamp is tightened, and the stamp is then ready for use as a generalbusines's stamp for stamping wrapping-paper, cards, Snc.
In addition to the large return envelope stamp and general-business stamp shown, respectively, in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, I also employ a smaller general-business stamp, (shown in Fig. 8 of the'drawings,) which is changed to a return-envelope stamp for small envelopes and small packages by placing the part A', the stamp of which is formed with the words After ten days return to77 above the part H', (shown in Fig. 8,) .when this combination will form a return stamp for small envelopes and packages.
Instead of forming the upper rear edge of the main section A of my combination-stamp with the longitudinal recess and with the end cut-away portion, it may be formed with a mortise or opening out clearly in its upper edge, in which the logotype, which in this case would be without the stem or shank, would fit, and in which position it would be rmly secured by a screw, J', or spring pin, this modification being shown in' Fig. 9 of the drawings.
From the foregoing. description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
It will be seen that by constructing my improved combination-stamp of the separable sections and logotypes, the one stamp,'or, rather, the parts which comprise one of my IOO IIO
improved'stampsnay be changed or adjusted person or firm by whom the stamp is to be used, and, in fact, any wording or inscription desired may be formed on the several parts of the stamp, as desired, without affecting in the least the spirit of my invention.
The logotypes instead of being formed with the Words Ofce of77 and Bought of, as here shown and described, may be formed with any similar words, such as In acct. with instead of Bought of, or Dru to, Snc.
My improved adjustable clamp with its handle, which forms a part of my invention,is simple and strong in construction and neat in appearance, and exceedingly efficient in its operation.
Having thus described illy-invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The adjustable clamp consisting ofthe central piece having the broad clamping-jaw at its outer end and the screw at its inner end, the perforated clamping-jaw having the parallel side pieces, the thumb-nut, and the handle secured upon the central piece ofthe clamp, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the main section having the longitudinal recess formed in its upper rear edge, and having its right-hand upper corner cut away, as described, of the logotype having the extension or stem adapted to fit in the said longitudinal recess, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS BARTHOLOMEW.
