HT? 6 CF 6 PATENTEU BUY 20 I975 'roY DISPLAY CARTON BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to improvements in display packages or cartons for merchandise, such as toys and the like, produced from a fiat paper blank.
The carton of the invention provides a novel, inexpensive and attractive package or container in which an article of merchandise, such as a toy, is contained and held for merchandising while at the same time it is directly visible and at display in the package.
The carton of the invention provides a cutout along the one side wall of the carton whereby the article, such as a truck, will be held in place in the carton.
The display carton of the invention comprises a package which visibly displays the toy or other contents of the carton without requiring opening of the carton to display the contents. The carton itself is sturdy and inexpensive to produce. The sturdiness of the carton is enhanced by the double wall thicknesses of the side panels which are provided from .a plurality of folds with which the blank from which the carton is assembled .is provided. Two laterally extending .panel elements extend from one of the sides of the carton to provide ends of the carton and tabs therefrom extend into and lock into cutouts positioned on the opposite side.
The carton of the invention is provided with a strip of material, integral with .the cardboard blank from which the carton is produced, lying against the wall of the container.
A primary object of the invention is the achievement and the realization of the above results and advantages.
Another object is to provide a novel, simplified, inexpensive, but practical and effective display package or carton for articles of merchandise and, in particular,
toys.
Further objects and numerous advantages of the invention will become apparent from the more detailed description to follow and the appended drawings.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring in more detail to the drawings, wherein the same reference numerals are used to designate like structural elements in the figures throughout, it will be apparent that FIGS. 1-6 depict a first preferred embodiment of the invention, FIGS. 7-12 depict another, and FIGS. 13-15 depict a third preferred embodiment of the invention shown with atoy fire truck housed in the assembled carton. The embodiment of FIGS. 7-12 differs primarily from the first preferred embodiment in that one of the side flaps provides a platform element for one side of the bottom of the box opposite the hollow inner panel having cutouts to restrain the wheels of a toy truck. It will be apparent that FIGS. 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 are, respectively, thecounterpart figures of corresponding FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. FIGS. 5 and 11 additionally-differ from each other in that they are sections taken of opposite sides of the carton they represent. FIG. 13 is a counterpart of FIGS. 1 and 7, showing the different flap arrangement intended to hold a toy fire truck in the assembled carton. FIG. 14 is the counterpart of FIGS. 4 and 10, but also shows the assembled v carton with a toy fire truck housed therein with a flap to retain the trucks ladder assembly in place, as shown in FIG. 15.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 6 will bereferred to primarily in the description which follows, but the embodiments of FIGS. 7-12 and FIGS. 13-15, are incorporated as well since many elements are identical with corresponding elements of FIGS. 71-6. Where differences are involved they will be described separately. A typical example of blank 10 which incorporates the principles of the embodiments of the invention is illustrated in these figures. One suitable form of sheet stock material from which the-blank 10 may be formed is known in the trade as paperboard, and may be coated or not. Sheet stock of this type is formed into blanks readily on a die cutting and creasing machine, not illustrated, such machine being provided with suitable dies operable simultaneously to cut the blank 10 from the sheet stock and also form the various slits as well as perforated or scored lines along which the various panels of the blank are to be folded relative to each other, as will be explained hereinafter.
Referring particularly to FIG. 1, the blank 10 comprises a bottom panel 12. Side-forming panels 18 and 20, respectively, are foldably connected to each other by fold line 22. It will be seen that the inner-sideforming panel 18 is disposed outermost from the bottom panel 12, while the panel 20 is the outer-sideforming panel. Said outer-side-forming panel is foldably connected to the adjacent edge of the bottom panel 12 by a preferably parallel folding line 21.
Side-forming panel 20 is terminated at its opposite ends by fold lines 23 and 24 which connect panel 20 with laterally extending end-panel elements and 26, respectively. The other sides of end- panel elements 25 and 26 are terminated by edges 27 and 28, respectively, and by fold lines 29 and 30 in the case of end-panel element 25 and fold lines 31 and 32 in the case of endpanel element 26.
Fold lines 29 and 31 connect end- panel elements 25 and 26, respectively, with tab panels 33 and 34. Tab panels 33 and 34 are characterized by a reduction in width by tapered edges 35 and 36 in one panel and 37 and 38 in the other. Tab panels 33 and 34 are terminated at their other and narrower ends by fold lines 39 and 40, respectively. Fold lines 39 and 40 connect tab panels 33 and 34 with tabs 41 and 42, respectively.
Tabs 41 and 42 have extensions 43, 44, 45 and 46 going beyond fold lines 39 and 40 as shown in FIGS. 1 and 7. Extensions 43, 44, 45 and 46 lead into curved edges 47, 48, 49 and 50, respectively, which narrow the width of the tabs and terminate in flat edges 51 in the case of tab 41 and 52 in the case of tab 42.
Fold lines 30 and 32 of end- panel elements 25 and 26, respectively, connect said end-panel elements with flaps 53 and 54, respectively. Flaps 53 and 54 terminate in edges 55 and 56, respectively, extending inwardly from fold lines 23 and 24, respectively, edges 57 and 58, respectively, extending inwardly from fold lines 29 and 31, respectively, and edges 59 and 590, respectively, which in the case of FIGS. 16 are parallel with edges 14 of panel 18.
Inner-side forming panel 18 is terminated at its other and opposite ends by edges 60 and 61, with edges 60 and 61 being substantially parallel with and extending from fold lines 23 and 24, respectively. There are provided gaps or cutouts 62 and 63, respectively, between edges 55 and 60 and between edges 56 and 61.
Bottom panel 12 is terminated by fold lines and 71 at opposite ends, which fold lines connect, respectively, with flaps 72 and 73. Flaps 72 and 73 have tapered edges 74 and 75 for flap 72' and tapered edges 76 and 77 for flap 73. Flaps 72 and 73 terminate, respectively, in edges 78 and 79. Tapered edges 74 and 76 originate at substantially fold line 21 and terminate at edges 78 and 79, respectively. Edges 27 and 74 provide cutout 80 and edges 28 and 76 provide cutout 81. Edges 7S and 77 originate at fold line 84 and terminate, respectively, at edges 78 and 79.
Bottom panel 12 is terminated at its remaining side by fold line 84 which connects with outer side-forming panel 85. Panel 85 is terminated by edges 86 and 87 which extend from and are parallel with fold lines 70 and 71, respectively. Panel 85 is terminated. at its remaining end by fold line 88 which connects with outer side-forming panel 89.
Panel 89 is terminated on two sides by edges 90 and 91, which are extensions of and are parallel with edges 86 and 87, respectively.
Panels 85 and 89 are equipped with two rectangular cutouts each, 92 and 93 for panel 85 and 94 and 95 for panel 89. The four cutouts are so spaced that when panels 85 and 89 are folded at fold line 88, cutout 92 will be in registration with cutout 94 and cutout 93 will register with cutout 95.
Panel 89 is terminated at its remaining end by fold line 88a which communicates with panel 89a. Panel 7 89a is terminated on its two sides by edges 90a and 91a,
which are extensions of and are parallel with edges 90 and 91, respectively. Panel 89a is terminated atits'remaining end by fold line 96 which communicates with retaining member 97.
Retaining member 97 is terminated at opposing ends by edges 98 and 99 which are extensions of and are parallel with edges 90a and 91a, respectively. Retaining member 97 is terminated at its other end by fold line 100 which communicates with adhesion panel 101. Retaining member 97 is equipped with two rectangular cutouts 102 and 103, two opposing sides of each of which are contiguous with fold lines 96 and 100, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 7. The cutouts 102 and 103 provide, when the carton is assembled, slots to hold the wheels on one side of a toy truck or a portion of another object in the display carton and prevent the contents from becoming loose in the carton.
Adhesion panel 101 is terminated on its remaining three sides by edges 104, and 106. Edges 104 and 105 are parallel with and extend from edges 98 and 99, respectively.
Adhesion panel 101 is to be adhered, when the carton is assembled, to the bottom panel 12, by glue or other suitable adhesive, and thereby hold retaining member 97 in place.
As will be apparent from FIGS. 1 and 7, edge 60, fold lines 23 and 70, and edges 86, 90, 90a, 98 and 104 form together a straight line as do edge 61, fold lines 24 and 71, and edges 87, 91, 91a, 99 and 105. Fold lines 30, 22 and 32 also form a straight line as do edge 27, fold line 21 and edge 28.
It is also apparent that fold lines, 30, 22, 32 and 21, 84, 88, 88a, 96, and 100 are all substantially parallel to each other. Fold lines 29, 23, 24, 31, 70 and 71 are also substantially parallel to each other.
The construction of the blank of FIG. 7, which forms the basis for FIGS. 812 of the drawings, discloses another embodiment of the carton of the invention and differs somewhat from the blank of FIG. 1. In the blank of FIG. 7, inner-side-forming panel 180 has a different configuration and provides a shelf to hold in place a portion of a toy or other object. Thus in FIG. '7, side forming panel 18a has an edge 600 which is shorter than corresponding edge 60 in FIG. 1. Edge 14a is terminated by perpendicular edge 110. Edge 61a of FIG. 7 is longer than corresponding edge 61 of FIG. 1. Edges and 61a are joined by edge 111. The area encompassed by edges 110, 111 and 61a is sectioned by fold lines 112, 113 and 114, defining panels 115, 116 and 1 17, respectively. Panel 1 17 is an adhesion panel which is to be adhered by glue or. other adhesive to bottom panel 12 when the blank is assembled to hold platform panel 116 in position.
FIG. 7 also illustrates that the cutouts 102a and 103a,
' which correspond generally to the cutouts 102 and 103 of FIG. 1, may differ somewhat in shape and placement in retaining member 97.
FIG. 13, shows the upper portion of a blank which is particularly suitable for housing a toy fire truck and its appended ladder assembly. This blank differs. from that of FIG. 1 in that it has a separate added flap 200, as shown, connecting with panel 18 at fold 202 which is an extension of edge 14b and is otherwise bounded by edges 601), 1110 and 600. Edge 111a is equipped with a circular recess 201, which is intended to hold in position a part of the trucks ladder holder (L), as shown in FIGS. 14 and 15.
The carton formed by the blank of FIG. 13 is assembled in the same manner as those of the blanks of FIGS.
1 and 7. As shown in FIGS. 14 and 15, the toy fire truck (T), with its ladder assembly (L), is housed in the carton, with the flap 200 folded back at an angle of about 45 to hold the ladder assembly (L) in place. Circular recess 201 of flap 200 accommodates a hump in the ladder assembly means.
In assembling the carton, as shown particularly by FIGS. 2 and 8, panels 53, 18, 54 and 89 are folded inwardly and over and glued or otherwise adhered to panels 25, 20, 26 and 85, respectively. Adhesion panel 101 is glued to bottom panel 12, as shown. End panels 72 and 73 are turned inwardly about 90. Tabs 41 and 42 and their appended panels are turned in back of the outer-side panel 85 and tucked into registered slots 92 and 94 in the case of tab 41 and registered slots 93 and 95 in the case of tab 42, as shown in FIG. 3. This forms the end closures for the carton by bringing end panels 25 and 26 over the open ends and outside of turned in panels 72 and 73, respectively.
By virtue of the fact that corners 43 and 44 and 45 and 46 are wider than registered slots 92, 94, 93 and 95, the tabs 41 and 42 are effectively locked into the slots, although by bending the flexible tabs can, if desired, be removed from the slots. This flexibility, of course, facilitates the initial tucking operation.
As adhesion panel 101 is adhered to the bottom panel 12, panel 97 is fixed in a plane perpendicular to the bottom panel 12, with the slots 102 and 103 and 102a and 103k ready to receive a portion of the toy to be placed in the carton to prevent the toy from becoming loose.
In the case of the embodiment of FIGS. 7-12, assembly is made in the same way as for the embodiment of FIGS. 1-6, except that since panel 18a and its appendages differ somewhat from that of panel 18 of FIG. 1, the assembly of that panel will be slightly different. In the embodiment of FIGS. 7-12, panel 18a is bent into and adhered to outer-side-forming panel 20. Adhesion panel 117 is then glued to bottom panel 12 as shown particularly in FIGS. 8 and 9. When the assembly of the carton is completed, as shown in FIGS. 9, and 12, a platform as shown by panel 115 is parallel with bottom panel 12 and a vertical panel 116 is perpendicular to bottom panel 12. This forms a recess between vertical panel 116 and side panel 20, into which a portion of a toy may be inserted to further lock the toy into place and prevent the toy from becoming loose in the carton.
Although tabs 41 and 42 are shown in FIGS. 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 12 as being perpendicular to side panels 85 and 89, when the carton is formed and ready to receive the contents, the two tabs may desirably be bent back against side panel 89 and adhered to said side panel.
As will be apparent from the foregoing disclosure and the drawings, the carton of the invention has particularly strong and durable side panels of double thickness due to folding over of outer panels and adhesion to the outer-side-forming panels.
The carton of the invention is readily assembled from a flat paper blank without any additional machinery at the site of assembly and can be rapidly assembled by untrained and inexperienced personnel. Since the carton is produced from flat blanks, the blanks can be stored until use with the utmost economy of storage space.
The terms and expressions which have been employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation, and there is no intention in the use of such terms and expressions of excluding any equivalents of the features shown and described or portions thereof, but it is recognized that various modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A display carton formed from a flat blank, which carton comprises in combination, a bottom panel, two pairs of side-forming panels, one first panel of each said pair being foldably connected respectively to opposite edges of said bottom panel, the other panels of each said pair being foldably connected to opposite parallel ends of each said first panel of each said pair, said other panels of each said pair each being folded inwardly upon the said first panels to which they are connected and adhered thereto, whereby said twopairs of said side-forming panels provide a double thickness of side walls, the remaining two ends of the first of said first panels having foldably connected thereto a pair of parallel opposite end-forming panel members, said parallel opposite end-forming panel members each having foldably connected to one side of each thereof second panels with the folds to the connecting said second panels to said opposite end members being parallel to the fold of one of the pairs of side-forming panels, said second panels each being folded inwardly and adhered to each of said end-forming panels, said opposite end-forming panels having foldably connected thereto at parallel opposite ends respectively a pair of tab-forming panels; said bottom panel having flaps foldably connected to its two opposite remaining edges, the remaining pair of side-forming panels each having a pair of tab-receiving cutouts in registration with the cutouts of the other panel and said cutouts being capable of receiving said tab-forming panels so as to close the ends of said display carton.
2. A display carton according to claim 1, wherein said remaining pair of side-forming panels have additionally foldably connected to the end of the second panel two additional panels foldably connected parallel to the end of said inner panel of said second pair of side-forming panels, the first of said two panels having spaced cutouts and the second of said additional panels being foldably connected to the first and adhered to said bottom panel, thereby providing a recessed area for retention of the object.
3. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, wherein said tab-forming panels are locked in said pairs of side panel cutouts to close the ends of said display carton.
4. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, wherein said tab-forming panels are provided with flexible tabs at the opposite ends of said tab-forming panels, which tabs are larger than the said pairs of sidepanel cutouts.
5. A display carton in accordance with claim 4, wherein when said flexible tabs are inserted in said pairs of side-panel cutouts, they lock in position and position said end-forming panels in position to close the ends of said display carton.
6. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, wherein said pairs of foldably connected side-forming panels have folds which are parallel to each other.
7. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, wherein said pairs of foldably connected end-forming panels have folds which are parallel to each other.
8. A display carton in accordance with claim I, having additionally foldably connected to the second sideforming panel of said first pair of side-forming panels, three foldably connected panels each fold being parallel to the other and the last of said folds being adhered to said bottom panel to thereby provide a platform for supporting the contents of said display carton.
9. A display carton according to claim 1, having additionally foldably connected to the second side-forming panel of said first pair of side forming panels, a foldably-connected panel having a circular recess therein to support the contents of said display carton.
10. A display carton according to claim 1, having additionally foldably connected to the second sideforming panel of said first pair of side-forming panels, a foldably-connected panel remaining in an unadhered condition with said foldable connection being parallel to second side-forming panel.

A display carton formed from a flat blank, which carton comprises in combination, a bottom panel, two pairs of side-forming panels, one first panel of each said pair being foldably connected respectively to opposite edges of said bottom panel, the other panels of each said pair being foldably connected to opposite parallel ends of each said first panel of each said pair, said other panels of each said pair each being folded inwardly upon the said first panels to which they are connected and adhered thereto, whereby said two pairs of said side-forming panels provide a double thickness of side walls, the remaining two ends of the first of said first panels having foldably connected thereto a pair of parallel opposite end'forming panel members, said parallel opposite end-forming panel members each having foldably connected to one side of each thereof second panels with the folds to the connecting said second panels to said opposite end members being parallel to the fold of one of the pairs of side-forming panels, said second panels each being folded inwardly and adhered to each of said end-forming panels, said opposite end-forming panels having foldably connected thereto at parallel opposite ends respectively a pair of tab-forming panels; said bottom panel having flaps foldably connected to its two opposite remaining edges, the remaining pair of side-forming panels each having a pair of tab-receiving cutouts in registration with the cutouts of the other panel and said cutouts being capable of receiving said tab-forming panels so as to close the ends of said display carton, said remaining pair of side-forming panels have additionally foldably connected to the end of the second panel two additional panels foldably connected parallel to the end of said inner panel of said second pair of side-forming panels, the first of said two panels having spaced cutouts and the second of said additional panels being foldably connected to the first and adhered to said bottom panel, thereby providing a recessed area for retention of an object; said second sideforming panel of said first pair of side-forming panels, having foldably connected thereto three foldably connected panels each fold being parallel to the other and the last of said folds being adhered to said bottom panel to thereby provide a platform for supporting the contents of said display carton.

Claims (11)

1. A display carton formed from a flat blank, which carton comprises in combination, a bottom panel, two pairs of sideforming panels, one first panel of each said pair being foldably connected respectively to opposite edges of said bottom panel, the other panels of each said pair being foldably connected to opposite parallel ends of each said first panel of each said pair, said other panels of each said pair each being folded inwardly upon the said first panels to which they are connected and adhered thereto, whereby said two pairs of said side-forming panels provide a double thickness of side walls, the remaining two ends of the first of said first panels having foldably connected thereto a pair of parallel opposite end-forming panel members, said parallel opposite end-forming panel members each having foldably connected to one side of each thereof second panels with the folds to the connecting said second panels to said opposite end members being parallel to the fold of one of the pairs of side-forming panels, said second panels each being folded inwardly and adhered to each of said end-forming panels, said opposite end-forming panels haVing foldably connected thereto at parallel opposite ends respectively a pair of tabforming panels; said bottom panel having flaps foldably connected to its two opposite remaining edges, the remaining pair of sideforming panels each having a pair of tab-receiving cutouts in registration with the cutouts of the other panel and said cutouts being capable of receiving said tab-forming panels so as to close the ends of said display carton.
2. A display carton according to claim 1, wherein said remaining pair of side-forming panels have additionally foldably connected to the end of the second panel two additional panels foldably connected parallel to the end of said inner panel of said second pair of side-forming panels, the first of said two panels having spaced cutouts and the second of said additional panels being foldably connected to the first and adhered to said bottom panel, thereby providing a recessed area for retention of the object.
3. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, wherein said tab-forming panels are locked in said pairs of side panel cutouts to close the ends of said display carton.
4. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, wherein said tab-forming panels are provided with flexible tabs at the opposite ends of said tab-forming panels, which tabs are larger than the said pairs of side-panel cutouts.
5. A display carton in accordance with claim 4, wherein when said flexible tabs are inserted in said pairs of side-panel cutouts, they lock in position and position said end-forming panels in position to close the ends of said display carton.
6. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, wherein said pairs of foldably connected side-forming panels have folds which are parallel to each other.
7. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, wherein said pairs of foldably connected end-forming panels have folds which are parallel to each other.
8. A display carton in accordance with claim 1, having additionally foldably connected to the second side-forming panel of said first pair of side-forming panels, three foldably connected panels each fold being parallel to the other and the last of said folds being adhered to said bottom panel to thereby provide a platform for supporting the contents of said display carton.
9. A display carton according to claim 1, having additionally foldably connected to the second side-forming panel of said first pair of side forming panels, a foldably-connected panel having a circular recess therein to support the contents of said display carton.
10. A display carton according to claim 1, having additionally foldably connected to the second side-forming panel of said first pair of side-forming panels, a foldably-connected panel remaining in an unadhered condition with said foldable connection being parallel to second side-forming panel.
11. A display carton formed from a flat blank, which carton comprises in combination, a bottom panel, two pairs of side-forming panels, one first panel of each said pair being foldably connected respectively to opposite edges of said bottom panel, the other panels of each said pair being foldably connected to opposite parallel ends of each said first panel of each said pair, said other panels of each said pair each being folded inwardly upon the said first panels to which they are connected and adhered thereto, whereby said two pairs of said side-forming panels provide a double thickness of side walls, the remaining two ends of the first of said first panels having foldably connected thereto a pair of parallel opposite end-forming panel members, said parallel opposite end-forming panel members each having foldably connected to one side of each thereof second panels with the folds to the connecting said second panels to said opposite end members being parallel to the fold of one of the pairs of side-forming panels, said second panels each being folded inwardly and adhered to each of said end-forming panels, said opposite end-forming panels having foldably connected thereTo at parallel opposite ends respectively a pair of tab-forming panels; said bottom panel having flaps foldably connected to its two opposite remaining edges, the remaining pair of side-forming panels each having a pair of tab-receiving cutouts in registration with the cutouts of the other panel and said cutouts being capable of receiving said tab-forming panels so as to close the ends of said display carton, said remaining pair of side-forming panels have additionally foldably connected to the end of the second panel two additional panels foldably connected parallel to the end of said inner panel of said second pair of side-forming panels, the first of said two panels having spaced cutouts and the second of said additional panels being foldably connected to the first and adhered to said bottom panel, thereby providing a recessed area for retention of an object; said second side-forming panel of said first pair of side-forming panels, having foldably connected thereto three foldably connected panels each fold being parallel to the other and the last of said folds being adhered to said bottom panel to thereby provide a platform for supporting the contents of said display carton.
