Abstract

A one-piece metal hanger casting has an inclined slot of special configuration in its upper portion to permit horizontal, vertical and diagonal adjustment on a single hanger bolt. Two holes in a lower portion of the casting provide for the optional placement of a stabilizing pin to prevent swaying in an earthquake. In a central position, a thickened portion of the casting provides an abutment for the rear faces of marble wall panels while a forwardly projecting horizontal flange on the thickened portion forms a ledge for supporting a pair of upper panels. A tapped boss in the middle of the flange receives a threaded stud on a rosette which clamps the adjacent corners of four panels to the casting.

4 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures MARBLE HANGER FOR CRYPT FRONT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a marble hanger front.
Conventional marble hangers for this purpose have been relatively complicated and expensive considering the fact that they are made from a durable, high quality, non-rusting metal or alloy. A more important objection, however, is the considerable amount of work involved in installing conventional marble hangers and in removing and replacing a marble wall panel when a casket is placed in a crypt. The wall is formed of a large number of such panels, each panel closing the front of one crypt, the crypts being arranged in tiers which extend to considerable height. In many cases the initial installation is complicated by requiring two large holes in the concrete crypt walls to receive a pair of hanger bolts for each hanger in order to stabilize the hanger.
Objects of the invention are, therefore, to provide an improved marble hanger for a crypt front, to provide a marble hanger of relatively simple and inexpensive construction which may be manufactured as a unitary casting, to provide a marble hanger which is easy to install and which facilitates the removal of a marble panel for placing a casket in a crypt, and to provide a hanger casting having a single bolt support with means to prevent swaying of the hanger.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present hanger comprises a unitary metal casting having an inclined slot of special configuration in its upper portion providing vertical, horizontal and diagonal adjustment for hanging the casting on a single hanger bolt. A lower portion of the casting has a pair of holes for the optional positioning of a stabilizing pin to prevent swaying. A thickened portion extends forwardly from the center of the casting to provide an abutment for the rear faces of the marble wall panels. A forwardly projecting horizontal flange on this thickened portion forms a ledge to support the lower edges of two upper panels. A tapped boss in the middle of the flange receives a threaded rosette stud to clamp the adjacent corners of four of the wall panels. The wall panels are released by merely unscrewing the rosette.
The invention will be better understood and additional objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description of the preferred embodiment illustrated on the accompanying drawing. Various changes may be made, however, in the details of construction and arrangement of parts and certain features may be used without others. All such modifications within the scope of the appended claims are included in the invention.

for a crypt DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT FIG. 1 shows a typical crypt construction having vertical walls 10 and horizontal walls 11 which form the corners of four rectangular crypts A, B, C and D. Crypts A and C contain caskets 12 and 13. The four crypts A, B, C and D are closed by four marble front panels P P P and P The purpose of the present hanger 15 is to support and secure the panels P,, P P and P The hanger 15 comprises a unitary casting of a durable non-rusting metal or alloy having a base portion 16 which is flat on its rear side. A thickened portion 17 having flat, vertical abutment faces 18 extends horizontally across base portion 16 at approximately mid height. A horizontal flange 20 projects farther forward at mid height on thickened portion 17. In the middle of flange 20 is a forwardly extending horizontal boss 21 having a tapped hole 22. The lower end of base portion 16 is provided with a pair of small holes 23.
The upper end of base portion 16 is provided with an inclined slot opening 25 of special configuration. The lower portion of the upper side of the slot is widened at 26 and the upper portion of the lower side of the slot is widened at 27 in relation to the end portions. The inclined slot wall at 26 is connected with the upper end of the slot by a horizontal wall portion 28 and is connected with the lower end of the slot by a vertical wall portion 29. Similarly, the inclined wall portion 27 on the lower side of the slot is connected with the lower end of the slot by a horizontal wall portion 30 and is connected with the upper end of the slot by a vertical wall portion 31.
This slot configuration allows a wide range of vertical, horizontal and diagonal adjustment on a single supporting bolt 35. FIG. 3 shows the range of diagonal adjustment on a line having an inclination of 45. A considerable range of horizontal adjustment is also illustrated. In addition, there is also a range of vertical adjustment between the upper wall 28 and the lower walls 30 and 36 and between the lower wall 30 and the upper walls 28 and 37.
Hanger castings 15 are made with the slot 25 extending in the direction shown in full lines in FIG. 3 at an angle of 45 to the vertical. These hanger castings allow a maximum range of adjustment in a diagonal direction from upper left to lower right with a lesser range of diagonal adjustment in a direction from upper right to lower left between the upper slot wall 26 and lower slot walls 27 and 36. Hanger castings are also made with the slot extending at a 45 angle from upper right to lower left for a maximum range of adjustment in this direction when needed, as indicated in broken lines at 25a.
To install the hanger 15, a hole 40 is drilled in the concrete wall 10 to admit the tapped flush shell 41 which receives bolt 35 equipped with a washer 42. When bolt 35 is tightened in flush shell 41, the hanger 15 is securely held in adjusted position with the bolt in the desired part of slot 25. Then a small hole 45 is drilled in the concrete wall structure 10, 11 in register with one of the holes 23 to receive the anti-sway pin 46.
The corners of the marble panels are bevelled at 50 to clear the boss 21. The inner faces of the panels are clamped against abutment surfaces 18 by rosette 51 with the upper panels P, and P resting on flange 20. Abutments 18 hold the panels spaced away from the 3. crypt front to provide clearance space for the head of bolt 35 and washer 42, as shown in FIG. 2. Rosette 51 is equipped with a threaded stud 52 which screws into the hole 22. Thus, the adjacent corners of the four panels are released by unscrewing the rosette 51.
By appropriately selecting a hanger with either right-hand or left-hand inclination of slot or 25a and then adjusting the hanger on its supporting bolt as described above, the rosette 51 is positioned symmetrically with respect to the adjacent corners of the four panels ciamped by the rosette. This avoids the necessity of precisely locating the large hole 40.
Having now described my invention and in what manner the same may be used, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A marble panel hanger for a crypt front comprising a one-piece-metal casting having a vertical base portion with a rear side engaging the crypt front, said casting having a middle portion which is thickened on its front side to provide abutments for the rear faces of the panels, a panel-supporting horizontal flange projecting forward from said thickened portion, an internally threaded boss in said flange, a rosette having a threaded stud engaged in said boss to clamp said panels against said abutments, an opening in the upper end of said base portion having vertical, horizontal and diagonal adjustment on a single supporting bolt in said crypt front, a hole in the lower end of said base portion, and an anti-sway pin in said hole mounted in said crypt 4 front for preventing pivotal movement of said hanger on said supporting bolt.
2. A hanger as defined in claim 1, said base portion having a flat rear side clamped against said crypt front by said supporting bolt.
3. A hanger as defined in claim 1, said opening for said supporting bolt comprising an inclined slot having a widened portion adjacent the lower end of its upper wall and a widened portion adjacent the upper end of its lower wall to provide said adjustment.
4. A one-piece'marble panel hanger casting for a crypt front comprising a vertical base portion having a flat rear side, a single supporting bolt opening in the upper end of said base portion comprising an inclined slot having a widened portion adjacent the lower end of its upper wall and a widened portion adjacent the upper end of its lower wall to provide vertical, horizontal and diagonal adjustments on a supporting bolt, a pair of holes in the lower end of said base portion to receive an anti-sway pin in optional position in one or the other of said holes, upper and lower panel abutments projecting forward from the front side of said base portion intermediate said upper and lower ends, a horizontal panel-supporting flange projecting forward from said abutments, and an internally threaded boss in the plane of said flange and extending perpendicular to said base portion to receive a rosette stud for clamping adjacent corners of the panels against said abutments. s

Claims (4)

1. A marble panel hanger for a crypt front comprising a onepiece metal casting having a vertical base portion with a rear side engaging the crypt front, said casting having a middle portion which is thickened on its front side to provide abutments for the rear faces of the panels, a panel-supporting horizontal flange projecting forward from said thickened portion, an internally threaded boss in said flange, a rosette having a threaded stud engaged in said boss to clamp said panels against said abutments, an opening in the upper end of said base portion having vertical, horizontal and diagonal adjustment on a single supporting bolt in said crypt front, a hole in the lower end of said base portion, and an anti-sway pin in said hole mounted in said crypt front for preventing pivotal movement of said hanger on said supporting bolt.
2. A hanger as defined in claim 1, said base portion having a flat rear side clamped against said crypt front by said supporting bolt.
3. A hanger as defined in claim 1, said opening for said supporting bolt comprising an inclined slot having a widened portion adjacent the lower end of its upper wall and a widened portion adjacent the upper end of its lower wall to provide said adjustment.
4. A one-piece marble panel hanger casting for a crypt front comprising a vertical base portion having a flat rear side, a single supporting bolt opening in the upper end of said base portion comprising an inclined slot having a widened portion adjacent the lower end of its upper wall and a widened portion adjacent the upper end of its lower wall to provide vertical, horizontal and diagonal adjustments on a supporting bolt, a pair of holes in the lower end of said base portion to receive an anti-sway pin in optional position in one or the other of said holes, upper and lower panel abutments projecting forward from the front side of said base portion intermediate said upper and lower ends, a horizontal panel-supporting flange projecting forward from said abutments, and an internally threaded boss in the plane of said flange and extending perpendicular to said base portion to receive a rosette stud for clamping adjacent corners of the panels against said abutments.
