[5 7 ABSTRACT A corrosion resistant valve of the stopcock type is pro-- 7 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures VALVE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to valves and more particularly to a corrosion resistant valve of the stopcock type.
2. DESCRIPTION OF TI-IEPRIOR ART Various valves of the stopcock type have heretofore been proposed including those made partially or wholly of synthetic plastic material.
In valves of the stopcock type employing a valve plug of synthetic plastic material, illustrative constructions being shown in US. Pat. Nos. 3,038,694 to Dunbeck et al., and 3,142,474 to Nelson, external springs were employed at the smaller end of the plug to aid in seating the plug in the body for sealing. The Nelson patent shows annular sealing strip and annular bearing strips on the exterior of the valve plug in engagement in the valve body. Roberts, US. Pat. No. 2,018,034 shows a draw down spring for a metallic valve plug.
It has also been proposed, as shown in Schenck, US. Pat. No. 2,539,106 to insert a resilient pador cushion between the lower end of the plug and the bottom inner surface of the valve body to provide resilience and take up any axial shock on the stem. Clade, in US. Pat. No. 2,718,665 shows a spring to urge the valve plug upwardly.
The use of synthetic plastic materials such as Teflon for valve plugs is shown by Dunbeck, US. Pat. No. 3,038,694, Nelson, U.S. Pat. No. 3,142,474, and others.
None of these shows a valve body and valve plug of Teflon in which the valve plug has an integral resilient downwardly and outwardly extending cap or flange which is held in compression by a clamping plate on the body at the opposite end of the valve plug.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the invention, a corrosion resistant valve plug and valve body of synthetic plastic material preferably Teflon, are provided in which the lower end of the valve plug has a downwardly and outwardly extending cup or flange engaging an interior surface in the valve body and against which it is urged by a holding plate at the opposite end of the valve plug, the body having flanged-connections for bolting into a fluid line.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a corrosion resistant valve having a rotatable valve plug carried in a valve body which is simple in construction yet sturdy and reliable in operation.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a corrosion resistant valve which has a minimum number of parts and in which the valve plug has an integral resilient portion to aid in sealing.
Other objects and advantageous features of the in vention will be apparent from the description and claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:
FIG. 1 is'a top plan view of a valve in accordance with the invention FIG. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an end elevational view parts being broken away to show the details of construction; and
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view at the. lower end of the valve plug.
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely and that various modifications and changes can be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now more particularly to the drawings, a unitary valve body 10 is provided preferably of the tough wear resistant synthetic tetrafluoroethylene resin known as Teflon.
The valve body 10 is preferably substantially cylindrical on the exterior with parallel end faces 11 and 12 and with cut-outs 13 for termination of bolt holes 14,
extending to the end faces 11 and 12 for clamping the body 10 in a fluid line for use, by bolts (not shown).
A longitudinal 'fluid passageway 15 connects the end faces 11 and 12.
Extending downwardly a short distance from the top of the body 110 a cylindrical bore 117, is provided with its axis intersecting the axis of the passageway 15, the bore 17 terminating at a flat face 13.
A cylindrical bore 21), concentric with the bore 17 extends downwardly therefrom to a flat lower end face 21 anda tapered bore 22 extends downwardly from the bores 17 and 20, in intersecting relation to the passageway 15, to an interior flat face 23.
A valve plug 25 is provided, preferably of the same material as the valve body 10, having a valve stem 26 with which an operating handle 27 is in engagement.
The valve plug 25, below the valve stem 26 has a shouldered flange 28for engagement with the flat face 21 and has a tapered plug portion. 30 complemental to the bore. 22.
The tapered plug portion has a central opening 311for establishing and shutting off communication with the passageway 15.
The valve plug 25 at its lower end, has a cup shaped or flaring flange portion 33 with a lower margin 34,
which is rounded in transverse cross section engaging the end face 23. The shape of the flange portion 33 is such as to provide resilience in the flange portion 33 when pressure is applied thereon from above.
The valve plug 25 is held in place, with the flange, portion 33 resiliently engaged with the end face 23 by a holding or clamping plate 35 which engages the face 18 and whichh has a central aperture 36 through which the valve stem 26 extends. The holding plate 35 engages the shouldered flange 28 and urges it into engagement with the face 211 which serves as a shoulder Bolts 38 hold the clamping plate 35 in place. The mode of use will be apparent from the foregoing.
The valve plug 25 is shown in open position with the central opening 31 of the tapered plug portion 30 aligned with the longitudinal passageway in the valve body 10.
When desired the valve plug 25 can be rotated by manipulation of the operating handle 27 to reduce or shut off flow.
The resilence of the flaring flange 33 cooperates with the clamping plate 35 to permit turning of the tapered plug portion 30 in its bore 22 while avoiding leakage and the valve plug portion 30 is held in the bore 22 by the engagement of the clamping plate 35 and the engagement of the shouldered flange 28 with the face 21.
The synthetic plastic employed is inert and resistant to corrosion.
