SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,039, dated March 6, 1888.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM S. ADLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents aside elevation of a last with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a top view of thelast with the instep-block removed. Fig. 3 is the same view with the parts separated. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the central or foundation part detached.

My present invention has reference to means for fitting lasts; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the exact manner in which I carry the same out.

In the accompanying drawings, A, B, and G represent the three parts of a sectional last, and D is the instep-block, itting on the saine. The part G,I call the central7 or foundation7 block, because upon this the last is built up, as will be hereinafter fully explained. This block is of uniform thickness from heel to toe and is provided with the dowel-pins d, for attaching to it the parts A and B, as shown in Fig. 3. On the block C, at the rear of the curve to receive the instep-block, I secure a spring-pawl, c, which, when thrown forward, engages one of the graduated grooves d in the end of the block D and holds the block D in any desired position, as shown inFig. 1, the forward end of the block being held by the notch c', cut in the foundation-block C.

To the foundation-block C are fitted the right and left side pieces, A and B, to complete the last. rlhese side pieces are of varying widths, but of same size or number in length to suit any foot, and the last can be quickly changed from one width to another by mined by the pawl c being dropped into one d of the graduated grooves d on the rear end of the instepblock, thus raising or lowering the instep, as may be desired.

With the mechanism I have thus described it is evident that after a last has been once tted to the foot a record can be made of parts used by letters or numbers, and the same exact tit can be reproduced at any time by reference to the record without again measuring the foot. On the foundationblocks I nd I can form an increased number of different well-fitting lasts of the same size as foundation-block C by the use of properly-proportioned side pieces.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A last, substantially as herein described, consisting of the foundation-block C, provided with the pawl c, in combination with the side pieces, A and B, and the instep-block D, provided with the graduated grooves d', all constructed as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The foundation-block C, provided with the pawl c and dowel-pins d, in combination with the side pieces, A and B, perforated to receive the dowel-pins, and the instep-block D, provided with a graduated scale of grooves on its rear end, and constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
