8 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures 1 COMBINATION HINGE AND HASP This invention relates to a separable hinge combined with a hasp for locking the hinge leaves in assembled relationship with respect to a hinge pintle.
It is a major object of this invention to provide a combination hinge and hasp which can be used as either a hinge or a hasp. One important application of the invention is in the installation of a pair of the combination hinge and hasp, one on the right side of a closure and the other on the left side of the closure so that the closure can be opened selectively from either side using one combination hinge and hasp as a hasp and the other combination hinge and hasp as a hinge. The closure can also be completely removed by unlatching the hasps on each side of the closure and separating the hinge parts.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved separable hinge comprising a pintle, a first hinge leaf having a pair of spaced cylindrical pintle bearings, a second hinge leaf having a pair of slotted,
orinterrupted cylindrical pintle bearings, the pintle being cylindrical throughout a major portion of its length and having flattened cut-away portions at spaced positions along the length of the pintle, the flattened portions being insertable laterally through the slotted pintle bearings of the second hinge leaf in one position of the pintle but when the pintle is turned 90 from the one position the flattened portions cannot be withdrawn from the slotted pintle bearings, a hasp loop or staple secured to the second hinge leaf, and. a hasp strap secured to the pintle in a position such that it will overlie the second hinge leaf in parallel relationship thereto when the pintle is turned 90 from the one position, the strap having a slot through which the loop extends, and removable fastener means, such as a pin or padlock which will retain the hasp strap engaged over the loop to prevent separation of the hinge leaves.
With the foregoing objects and features in view and such other objects and features which may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention will be understood from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like parts and wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention in assembled relationship;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the invention taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is view from the same position as FIG. 2 but showing the hinge pintle turned counterclockwise 90 and with one hinge leaf withdrawn from the pintle;
FIG. 4 is an exploded perspective view of the invention with parts in disassembled relationship.
Referring now to the drawing and particularly to FIG. 1 the separable hinge of this invention as indicated at 10, is shown in assembled relationship. The hinge com: prises a pair of hinge leaves 11 and 12 pivotally connected by a pintle l3 and secured in assembled relationship by means of a hasp which includes a hasp strap 14 secured at one end to the pintle 13 by welding, and a hasp loop or staple 15 which is secured to the hinge leaf 12, by welding or other suitable means. The hasp loop 15 projects through a slot 16 in the hasp strap and a padlock 17 is snapped through the projecting portion of the loop 15 to retain the hasp strap engaged over the loop. Each of the hinge leaves has holes 18 extending therethrough through which screws or other suitable fasteners may be extended to secure the hinge leaves to a door, gate or other closure and to the frame or support for the door, gate or other closure.
As seen in the exploded view in FIG. 4 the pintle is a cylindrical solid rod which is cut away or notched on opposite sides of the rod near the opposite ends of the pintle. The pintle where notched presents flattened portions 19 and 20 having parallel faces 19a, 19b and 20a, 20b respectively which are symetrical with respect to a plane extending longitudinally through the center axis of the pintle and including the diametric line aa. The longitudinal end surfaces 19c, 19d, 20c, 20d of the flattened portions 19 and 20 respectively are curved segments of the cylindrical surface of the pintle. The maximum dimension of the flattened portions 19 and 20 between the end surfaces 19c, 19d and 20c, 20d is thick while the perpendicular dimension between the surfaces 19a, 19b and 20a, 20b is relatively thin and is displaced from the thick dimension.
The hinge leaf 11 includes a flat body portion 11 and a pair of cylindrical bearings 21 and 22 which are integrally connected along one longitudinal edge of the leaf 11. The bearings 21 and 22 are circular in crosssectional for substantially a full 360 to provide cylindrical coaxial bores 21' and 22 for receiving the pintle 13. The distance between the top of bearing 21 and the bottom of bearing 22 is equal to the length of the cylindrical intermediate portion 13' of the pintle between the flattened pintle portions 19 and 20. When the pintle 13 is assembled in the bearings 21 and 22 the pintle is secured with the top of bearing 21 coplanar with the bottom of the flattened portion 19, and with the bottom of bearing 22 coplanar with the top of flattened portion 20. Stop rings 23 and 24 are assembled over the intermediate portion 13' of the pintle and are welded to the pintle below bearing 21 and above bearing 22 to prevent longitudinal displacement of the pintle relative to bearings 21 and 22 once the pintle is assembled in the bearings in the aforesaid position. One end of the hasp strap 14 is welded at 14' to the pintle intermediate the ends thereof after the pintle has been assembled in the pintle bearings 21 and 22. When so assembled the pintle 13 may be rotated in the bearings 21, 22 through an are substantially greater than 270 but less than 360 because the hasp strap 14 functions as a stop to prevent full rotation of the pintle when the strap engages either of the opposite sides of the hinge leaf 11.
The hinge leaf 12 includes a flat body portion 12 and pintle bearings 25 and 26 integrally connected to the body portion along one longitudinal edge thereof. The top of bearing 25 is flush with the top edge of body portion 12' and the bottom of bearing 26 is flush with the bottom edge of body portion 12'. The bearings 25 and 26 are provided with vertically aligned longitudinal arcuate openings or slots 27 and 28 respectively. The slots 27 and 28 are each defined by a pair of opposed parallel, longitudinal surfaces 27', 27" and 28, 28" respectively. The perpendicular distances between surfaces 27, 27 and between surfaces 28', 28" are equal to or slightly greater than the perpendicular distances between the parallel surfaces 19a, 19b and between the parallel surfaces 20a and 20b of the pintle 13 so that when the pintle 13 is turned as shown in FIG. 3 the fiattened portions 19 and 20 may be inserted through the openings 27 and 28 respectively. The vertical height of bearings 25 and 26 is slightly less than the vertical height of flattened pintle portions 19 and 20 so that the bearings 25 and 26 may slide between the shoulders of the pintle formed by the notches cut therein when inserting the flattened portions 19 and 20 through the slots 27 and 28 respectively.
Once the flattened portions 19 and 20 are inside the bearings 25 and 26 respectively the pintle 13 is locked within the bearings 25 and 26 by grasping the hasp strap 14 and turning the pintle 90 until the parallel surfaces 19a, 19b, 20a, and 20b of flattened portions 19 and 20 respectively are normal to the parallel faces of the hinge leaf l2, and the hasp strap 14 lies parallel to the leaf 12 with the hasp loop extending through the slot 16. The insertion of a catch pin or padlock 17 through the loop 15 as shown in FIG. 2 will lock the hasp and fix the pintle within the bearings 25 and 26 against relative rotation. The hinge leaf 11 however is free to rotate about the pintle 13 and relative to the leaf 12.
To disassemble the hinge 10, the padlock 17 is removed and the hasp strap 14 is rotated 90 away from the leaf 12 in which position the hinge leaf 12 may be slid off the flattened pintle portions 19 and as indicated in FIG. 3.
The hinge leaves 11 and 12 of this invention may be of various sizes and shapes, and while the preferred embodiment as illustrated in the drawing includes a pair of bearings on each leaf, it is within the scope of this in vention that the hinge may have only one bearing on each leaf or may have more than two depending upon the size of the hinge and the strength requirements for the hinge in a particular use situation.
Also while the longitudinal centers of the slots 27 and 28 lie in the center plane of the leaf 12 according to the preferred embodiments illustrated, the position of the slots may be angularly displaced from the aforesaid center plane.
While in the foregoing there has been described and shows the preferred embodiment of the invention, various modifications and equivalents may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
