Abstract

A display package for a brassiere wherein the brassiere is disposed between transparent sheet members that are secured together. The sheets are formed having a pair of laterally spaced cup-like portions that are in nested relation to each other, with the brassiere cups interposed between the respective pairs of nested cup-like portions. The construction is such that the brassiere cups are in laterally tensioned relation to each other with the cups in an outwardly distended condition to simulate the condition of such a brassiere when it is worn by the wearer.

Field of the Invention This invention relates, generally, to garment display packages, and more particularly, to a display package for a brassiere wherein the brassiere cups are in laterally tensioned relation to each other with said cups in an outwardly distended condition to simulate the condition of such a brassier when it is worn by the wearer.

2. Description of the Prior Art Heretofore, in the sale of brassieres, it is common for such garments to be placed on a display counter in a loose or unpackaged condition, whereby the customers may visually and physically examine the brassiere prior to the purchase thereof. The difficulty with this merchandising approach is that the loose or unpackaged brassieres are not usually enclosed in any protective wrapping and thus become soiled or damaged due to the frequent handling thereof. Furthermore, the prospective customers are inclined to pass over the unpackaged brassieres as being unsanitary or hygienically unclean due to the frequent handling thereof. In addition, the unpackaged brassieres, when loosely displayed, are relatively unappealing and do not enable the customer to envision how the garment will look or fit in use.

To overcome some of these difficulties, it is now also common for such brassieres to be sold in cartons or packages with an artistic rendering on the outside thereof attempting to illustrate the condition of the brassiere when it is worn by the wearer. This merchandising approach has proven more acceptable; especially when combined with the use of models or dummy forms showing the brassiere in its actual worn condition. However, the packages or cartons are not sealed to any great degree so that many women still take the liberty of opening the packages or cartons to physically examine the brassiere prior to the purchase thereof. Thus, many of the difficulties referred to earlier in connection with the display of brassieres in a loose or unpackaged condition are also applicable here, as well.

Even after the customer selects the brassiere, she often seeks out the assistance of a sales clerk to answer questions regarding the size and fit thereof. However, in stores across the country, the cost of doing business has risen so sharply that store owners, in an attempt to reduce operating costs, have not staffed their stores with adequate sales personnel. This has resulted in a shortage of trained sales personnel so that customer service in many stores today is practically non-existent.

In order to overcome the shortage of sales personnel, the store owners are concentrating on a more visual approach to merchandising, whereby the customer can select the brassiere she requires, without assistance, and be assured that it is the proper garment in terms of size and fit. This has led store owners to place the brassiere garments on hangers suspended from a supporting rack. Here again, however, the hanging brassieres are not usually enclosed in any protective wrapping and thus become soiled or damaged due to the frequent handling thereof. Accordingly, many of the problems herefore discussed in connection with unpackaged or loose brassieres apply to hanging brassieres, as well.

Even where the hanging brassiere is enclosed in some form of protective wrapper, the customer is still unable to envision how the garment will look or fit in use. This problem is all the more present with todays design emphasis on new lightweight fabrics wherein the brassiere hangs loosely and does not look appealing when placed or supported on a hanger. In this regard, the loosely hanging brassiere tends to detract from sales since they falsely suggest or infer that the brassieres will not function properly when worn. It thus has become extremely important to not only provide a protective wrapping for the brassiere, but to also display the brassiere in an appealing form. In line with this objective, the use of models or dummy forms in merchandising brassieres has proven successful and gained in popularity over recent years. In fact, today, most of the major brassiere manufacturers advertise extensively in magazines, newspapers and on television, wherein such advertisements always show the brassiere on a model or dummy form. This permits the prospective customer to quickly see the full appearance of the brassiere in its worn condition and thus enables the customer to more readily envision the brassiere on her own body. For example, the use of a model or dummy form in connection with any given brassiere size readily permits the customer to see the projection and shaping of the breast cups; the separation and height between the cups; and the elasticity and adjustability of the brassiere'This, in turn, permits the customer to readily envision how the brassiere would look and fit on her body, without requiring her to open the package and physically examine the garment prior to the purchase thereof. However, the practical disadvantages in providing a whole line of dummy forms, in various sizes, in connection with the sale of brassieres is immediately apparent. The dummys are usually quite expensive; rather large and take up a great deal of space. There has thus arisen the need for a brassiere display package which has the effect of simulating the condition of the brassiere as if it were on a dummy form, from which the customer can readily envision how the garment will look and fit when in actual use.

An example of a prior art display package is shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,190,435 which is directed to the merchandising, shipping and packaging of brassieres. The structure therein provides for the brassiere to be enclosed in a transparent package with the brassiere cups being positioned one upon the other as in a nested condition. While the package does purport to illustrate the shape of one breast cup and thus serves to eliminate some of the problem heretofore known in the merchandising of such articles, the package still does not give a true and accurate representation of how the brassiere will look in its actually worn condition. In other words, the package does not support the brassiere with the brassiere. cups in laterally spaced and tensioned rela tion to each other with each of said brassiere cups in an outwardly distended condition.

The construction set forth in U.S. Pat. No. 3,190,435 also requires that one of the breast cups be capable of being inverted so as to be disposed in nested relation to the other one of said breast cups prior to the sealing of the package. This nesting feature is not practical in connection with heavily padded or molded brassieres and can not be readily applied thereto.

The present invention expands further on the general concept of a transparent brassiere display package and provides a more accurate and true representation of the brassiere simulating the condition thereof when it is worn by the wearer.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The brassiere display package of the present invention includes a pair of transparent stiff sheet members each having a pair of laterally spaced concave-convex cup-like portions. The sheets are superposed so that the cup-like portions of one sheet member are in nested relation to the cup-like portions of the other sheet member. The brassiere is disposed between said sheet members, in a tensioned condition, with the brassiere cups interposed between the respective pairs of nested cuplike portions, and the sheets are then secured together to form the package. The arrangement is such that the lateral spacing between the cup-like portions and the arcuate dimensions of said nested cup-like portions serve to place the brassiere cups in laterally tensioned relation to each other with each of said brassiere cups in an outwardly distended condition to thereby simulate the condition of the brassiere when it is worn by the wearer. One of the sheet members includes a hanger member extendable from an edge portion thereof whereby the display package may be suspended from conventional supporting racks.

In another embodiment of the invention, a third transparent sheet member similarly having a pair of laterally spaced concavo-convex cup-like portions is interposed between the pair of sheet members, with the cup-like portions of said third sheet member being in nested relation to the cup-like portions of said pair of sheet members. The brassiere is mounted on the third sheet member, in a tensioned condition, with the cuplike portions being received in the brassiere cups. The third sheet member also includes a hanger member extendable from an edge portion thereof whereby said third sheet member defines a hanger for the brassiere when the package display is opened and the brassiere is removed therefrom. The third sheet member may also include a plurality of spaced ventilating openings for purposes that will become hereinafter more apparent.

Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a display package for a brassiere which enables the customer to more readily envision how the brassiere will look and fit on her own body.

Another object and feature of the invention is to provide a display package for a brassiere wherein the brassiere cups are in laterally spaced and tensioned relation to each other with each of said brassiere cups in an outwardly distended condition.

A further object, feature and advantage of the invention is to provide a display package for a brassiere which protects the garment against soiling from the time it was manufactured and packaged until such time as the brassiere is sold to a customer.

Another object, feature and advantage of the invention is to provide a display package for a brassiere which may be readily stacked with, a plurality of such packages in relatively small areas for purposes of shipping, storage or display.

The above brief description, as well as further objects, features and advantages of the present invention, will be more fully appreciated by reference to the following detailed description thereof, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to FIGS. 1 through 6, numeral 10 represents the assembled display package with the brassiere 40 mounted therein. Package 10 is formed of a pair of stiff

12 and 14 which are designed to retain the form in which they are made. Thus,

12 and 14 are preferably formed of a plastic material which is shaped by pressing the material in a suitably shaped mold. Sheet 12 is formed having a pair of laterally spaced concavo-convex

like portions

In the preferred embodiments, sheet 14 is intended to be somewhat thicker and more rigid than sheet member 12 whereby sheet 14 may be appropriately defined as a carrier member for brassiere 40 and sheet 12 may be defined as the transparent cover sheet of the display package.

Brassiere 40 is formed having conventional brassiere cups 42, 44, intermediate connecting portions 46, side panels 48, and straps 52, 54. Brassiere 40 is disposed between

Front cover sheet 12 is then assembled with carrier sheet 14 carrying brassiere 40 thereon. To further give a true and accurate presentation of the brassiere, it is important to shape and dimension the sheets such that the lateral spacing between cup-like portions l6, l8 and 20, 22 and the arcuate dimensions of the nested cup-

like portions

16, and 18, 22 serve to place the spaced brassiere cups 42, 44 in laterally tensioned relation to each other with each of the brassiere cups 42, 44 in a outwardly distended condition. If necessary, the region on

12, 14 between the respective spaced cup-like portions may be displaced slightly out of the plane of the sheets, as indicated by

24, 26, respectively, to accommodate the intermediate portion 46 of brassiere 40 when the brassiere cups 42, 44 are in laterally tensioned relation to each other. The result is to achieve an accurate simulation of the condition of the brassiere when it is worn by the wearer.

Thus, the customer can easily see the actual projection and shapingof the breast cups; the separation and height between the cups;- and obtain a relatively accurate idea as to the elasticity and adjustability of the brassiere. This, in turn, permits the customer to readily envision how the brassiere would look and fit on her body without requiring her to open the package and physically examine the garment.

12, 14 are secured to each other along their marginal edges in conventional manner; such as by heat sealing or adhesive bonding or stapling the same together. Advertising indicia (not shown) may be associated with or on the sheets to reflect the manufacturers brand name, the size of the garment or any other desired advertising or merchandising data.

After the display package has been assembled, the manufacturer may conveniently stack a plurality of such packages, as shown in FIG. 6, for purposes of storage and shipping. The packages may also be conveniently stacked on a counter for display purposes. The stacking arrangement is facilitated by means of the nested cup-like portions of one package being received within the corresponding nestedcup-like portions of the next adjacent package.

Instead of stacking the packages on a counter, means are provided for suspending the display package from a support. For example,

28, 30, 32 and 34, 36, 38, respectively, which are in register in the assembled package for receiving supporting hooks (not shown). Sheets 12 also includes foldable hanger means 39 extending from the top edge thereof disposed to be either pivoted upwardly as shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 5 to support the package in conventional manner from a support rack, or folded downwardly as shown in FIG. 3 to lie adjacent a surface portion of said sheet when not in use. In this regard, the hanger material is somewhat flexible to facilitate the foldability thereof.

It will be readily appreciated that the customer is unable to physically examine the brassiere due to the novel package display referred to above. The customer, however, may still see the brassiere in its worn condition and may even physically handle the package without affecting the brassiere itself, such that the brassiere will retain its appearance and shaping, and remain unsoiled for further display. If desired, one sample brassiere for each size may be removed from its package and kept on the counter so that the customer can physically examine and even try-on the sample brassiere, if r necessary. The attractive and appealing manner of packaging and displaying the brassiere should add greatly to the merchandising thereof since each customer would be assured that the brassiere therein has not been physically handled, soiled or damaged by others prior to the purchase thereof.

As will be further appreciated, each package 10 is specifically formed and dimensioned for a particular brassiere size so as to enhance the shaping and appearance thereof. No extra or excess dimensional to tolerances are required, as would otherwise be necessary if the same package were intended to accommodate a wide range of different sizes of brassieres. The present display package also lends itself quite favorably to the merchandising of molded and/or padded brassieres which would be specifically sized and packaged in particular, selected display packages to accommodate such pre-shaped brassieres.

FIGS. 7 through 11 illustrate another embodiment of the invention wherein display package 10' includes front sheet 12', rear sheet 14' and brassiere 40' interposed therebetween; which elements are similar in construction and correspond to elements l2, l4 and 40 referred to in connection with the embodiment of FIGS. 1 through 6. Thus, sheet 12' is formed having a pair of laterally spaced concavo-convex cup-like portions 16', 18' which project outwardly from the plane of the sheet. Sheet 14' is similarly formed having a pair of laterally spaced concave-convex cup-like portions 20', 22 which project outwardly from the plane of said sheet.

Similar to the earlier noted embodiment, it is important to shape and dimension the sheets 12' and 60 such that the lateral spacing between the respective cup-like portions and the arcuate dimensions of said nested cuplike portions serve to place the spaced brassiere cups 42', 44 in laterally tensioned relation to each other with each of the brassiere cups 42, 44' in an outwardly distended condition. Sheets 12', 14' and 60 each include spaced out out portions in the form of

28, 30, 32 and 34, 36 38 and 72, 74, 76, respectively, which are in register in the assembled package for receiving supporting hooks, not shown. Sheet 12 also includes foldable hanger means 39' extending from the top edge thereof disposed to be either pivoted upwardly as shown in FIGS. 7, 8 and 9 to support the package in conventional manner from a support rack, or folded downwardly (not shown) to lie adjacent a surface portion of sheet 12' when not in use.

Sheet 60 is intended to function as a hanger when the package is opened by the purchaser. In this connection, foldable hanger means 78 extends from the top edge of sheet 60 and is disposed to fold downwardly as shown in FIGS. 8 and 9 and lie adjacent a surface portion of said sheet when the package is assembled. Upon opening the package, hanger 70 can be pivoted upwardly, as shown in FIG. 7, to support the brassiere in conventional manner from a support rack. Thus, after the brassiere is washed, it may be placed back on sheet 60 so that the brassiere will substantially retain its original proper shape while drying, without being excessively stretched, and thereby extend the life of the garment. Sheet 60 may also be formed with a plurality of spaced ventilating openings 80 to provide more rapid drying of the brassiere after it has been washed and placed back on the sheet.

It will now be appreciated that the present invention provides an improved display package for a brassiere that eliminates the difficulties and other shortcomings heretofore referred to in the description of the prior art. I

While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail, it will be readily understood and appreciated that various changes or modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim I. A display package for a brassiere comprising:

a. a pair of stiff sheet members;

b. one of said sheet members being a transparent front sheet;

c. each sheet member having a pair of laterally spaced concavo-convex cup-like portions;

d. the cup-like portions of one of said sheet members being in nested relation to the cup-like portions of the other sheet member;

e. the brassiere being disposed between said sheet members in a tensioned condition with the brassiere cups thereof interposed between the respective pairs of nested cup-like portions;

f. the lateral spacing between the cup-like portions and the arcuate dimensions of said nested cup-like portions being such as to place the brassiere cups in laterally tensioned relation to each other with each of said brassiere cups in an outwardly distended condition, whereby to simulate the condition of such a brassiere when it is worn by the wearer; and

g. means for securing the sheet members together.

2. The display package as recited in claim 1, wherein said brassiere is mounted on the other one of said sheet members in a tensioned condition.

3. The display package as recited in claim 1, further including suspending means on at least one of said sheet members for hanging the display package.

4. The display package as recited in claim 3, wherein said suspending means comprises a hanger member extending from an edge portion of the associated sheet member.

5. The display package as recited in claim 4, wherein said hanger member is foldable downwardly and adjacent a surface portion of the associated sheet when not in use.

6. The display package as recited in claim 3, wherein said suspending means comprises registering openings in the sheet members.

7. The display package as recited in claim 1, further including a third stiff sheet member interposed between said pair of sheet members; said third sheet member having a pair of laterally spaced concavo convex cuplike portions; the cup-like portions of said third sheet member being in nested relation to the cuplike portions of said pair of sheet members; said third sheet member having hanger means extendable from an edge portion thereof; said brassiere being mounted on said third sheet member in a tensioned condition with the cup-like portions thereof being received in the brassiere cups; whereby said third sheet member provides a hanger for the brassiere when the package display is opened and the brassiere and third sheet member are removed therefrom.

8. The display package as recited in claim 7, wherein said hanger means is foldable downwardly and adjacent a surface portion of said third sheet member when not in use.

9. The display package as recited in claim 7, wherein said third sheet member includes a plurality of spaced ventilating openings.

10. A display package for a brassiere comprising:

a. a plurality of stiff sheet members,

b. one of said sheet members being a front transparent sheet, another of said sheet members being a back sheet, and a third sheet member interposed between said front and back sheets;

c. each sheet member having a pair of laterally spaced concavo-convex cup-like. portions;

d. the cup-like portions of said sheet members being in nested relation to each other;

e. the brassiere being mounted on the third sheet member in a tensioned condition with the cup-like portions thereof being received in the brassiere f. the lateral spacing between the cup-like portions of the third sheet member, and the arcuate dimensions thereof, being such as to place the brassiere cups in laterally tensioned relation to each other with each of said brassiere cups in an outwardly distended condition, whereby to simulate the condition of such a brassiere when it is worn by the wearer; and

g. means for securing the sheet members together.

11. The display package as recited in claim 10, further including suspending means on at least one of said sheet members for hanging the display package.

12. The display package as recited in claim 11, wherein said suspending means comprises a hanger member extending from an edge portion of the associated sheet member.

13. The display package as recited in claim 12, wherein said hanger member is foldable downwardly and adjacent a surface portion of the associated sheet when not in use.

14. The display package as recited in claim 11, wherein said suspending means comprises registering openings in the sheet members.

15. The display package as recited in claim 10, wherein said third sheet member includes hanger means extendable from an edge portion thereof to provide a hanger for the brassiere when the package display is opened and the brassiere and third sheet member are removed therefrom.

16. The display package as recited in claim 15, wherein said hanger means is foldable downwardly and adjacent a surface portion of said third sheet member when not in use.

17. The display package as recited in claim 15, wherein said third sheet member includes a plurality of 10 spaced ventilating openings.

18. A display package for a brassiere comprising:

a. a front and a rear sheet member, said rear sheet member having a thickness greater than said front sheet member;

b. said front sheet member being of a transparent material;

c. each sheet member having a pair of laterally spaced concave-convex cup-like portions;

g. means for securing the sheet members together. l

Claims

1. A display package for a brassiere comprising: a. a pair of stiff sheet members; b. one of said sheet members being a transparent front sheet; c. each sheet member having a pair of laterally spaced concavoconvex cup-like portions; d. the cup-like portions of one of said sheet members being in nested relation to the cup-like portions of the other sheet member; e. the brassiere being disposed between said sheet members in a tensioned condition with the brassiere cups thereof interposed between the respective pairs of nested cup-like portions; f. the lateral spacing between the cup-like portions and the arcuate dimensions of said nested cup-like portions being such as to place the brassiere cups in laterally tensioned relation to each other with each of said brassiere cups in an outwardly distended condition, whereby to simulate the condition of such a brassiere when it is worn by the wearer; and g. means for securing the sheet members together.

The display package as recited in claim 1, further including a third stiff sheet member interposed between said pair of sheet members; said third sheet member having a pair of laterally spaced concavo-convex cup-like portions; the cup-like portions of said third sheet member being in nested relation to the cup-like portions of said pair of sheet members; said third sheet member having hanger means extendable from an edge portion thereof; said brassiere being mounted on said third sheet member in a tensioned condition with the cup-like portions thereof being received in the brassiere cups; whereby said third sheet member provides a hanger for the brassiere when the package display is opened and the brassiere and third sheet member are removed therefrom.

10. A display package for a brassiere comprising: a. a plurality of stiff sheet members, b. one of said sheet members being a front transparent sheet, another of said sheet members being a back sheet, and a third sheet member interposed between said front and back sheets; c. each sheet member having a pair of laterally spaced concavo-convex cup-like portions; d. the cup-like portions of said sheet members being in nested relation to each other; e. the brassiere being mounted on the third sheet member in a tensioned condition with the cup-like portions thereof being received in the brassiere cups; f. the lateral spacing between the cup-like portions of the third sheet member, and the arcuate dimensions thereof, being such as to place the brassiere cups in laterally tensioned relation to each other with each of said brassiere cups in an outwardly distended condition, whereby to simulate the condition of such a brassiere when it is worn by the wearer; and g. means for securing the sheet members together.

17. The display package as recited in claim 15, wherein said third sheet member includes a plurality of spaced ventilating openings.

18. A display package for a brassiere comprising: a. a front and a rear sheet member, said rear sheet member having a thickness greater than said front sheet member; b. said front sheet member being of a transparent material; c. each sheet member having a pair of laterally spaced concave-convex cup-like portions; d. the cup-like portions of one of said sheet members being in nested relation to the cup-like portions of the other sheet member; e. the brassiere being disposed between said sheet members in a tensioned condition with the brassiere cups thereof interposed between the respective pairs of nested cup-like portions; f. the lateral spacing between the cup-like portions and the arcuate dimensions of said nested cup-like portions being such as to place the brassiere cups in laterally tensioned relation to each other with each of said brassiere cups in an outwardly distended condition, whereby to simulate the condition of such a brassiere when it is worn by the wearer; and g. means for securing the sheet members together.
