It provides, as a cost saving measure and attachment facilitating measures, an arrangement whereby the rifle butt can carry different, interchangeable butt plates, adapting the rifle stock itself to different uses, including for example use of the rifle for skeet shooting, for shooting clay pigeons, for purposes of hunting, and other purposes, also fitting the rifle stock for use by different hunters and other users.
For this'purpose the new rifle butt plate unit comprises an intermediate plate, directly attached to the rifle butt, and generally a set of butt plates directly or indirectly attached to the intermediate plate by suitable fitting means. In the case of indirect attachment of the butt plate, extension pieces or anti-recoil shoes may be provided.
THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a side view ofa rifle equipped in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on a somewhat larger scale, of the butt end of the rifle of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a right-hand end view of the intermediate plate in FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a left-hand end view of the butt plate in FIG. 4.
FIGS. 5 and 6 are views generally corresponding to FIGS. 2 and 4 respectively but showing a modified embodiment of the invention.
FIGS. 7 and 8 illustrate a second modification in views corresponding respectively to FIGS. 2 and 1.
FIG. 9 shows a third modification in a view corresponding to FIG. 2.
FIG. 10 shows a fourth modification in a view corresponding to FIG. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION As shown in FIG. 1 the shoulder end C of the rifle butt C is equipped with an intermediate plate 1, so arranged that the rifle can have different butt plates secured thereto, interchangeably, without other modification of the rifle and intermediate plate. For this purpose the rifle butt as shown has a central hollowed out portion C for housing essential profiled part 10 of the intermediate plate I. Preferably but not necessarily the plate is of a suitable plastic material. As illustrated, it is secured to butt end C by wood screws 2, the heads ofwhich are centered in countersunk recesses lb at the face of the plate facing away from the butt.
Central profiled piece la of the plate receives, directly or through the intermediary of threaded metallic ring 4, a machine screw 3 having a shouldered end 3a for holding the butt plate to be secured to the intermediate plate.
The butt plate 5 as shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 4 is of the type frequently used for purposes of hunting or skeet" 1 shooting. Such a plate 5 receives the head end of machine screw 3 in a central boss 5a. For proper location of the butt plate the butt surface of this plate, facing the intermediate plate, is of suitably recessed and ribbed structure with recessed bosses 5b for engagement with the bosses 1b of the intermediate plate 1. Plate 5 is generally made fairly thin, with a thickness of the order of 10 to 12 mm and with a slightly concave outer surface as encountered in many types of rifles. The plate can be of plastic and particularly of cellulose acetate.
The modified butt plate 6 of FIGS. 5 and 6 is of a greater thickness, on the order to 25 to 30 mm, and has more pronounced outer curvature to fit the users shoulder. This form is particularly preferred for use on shooting ranges and the like.
According to the modifications of FIGS. 7 and 8, extension plates 7, preferably of metal, are interposed between intermediate plate I and butt plate 5 or 6. They fit the bosses 1b of plate I and can be superimposed on one another in suitable numbers depending in the desired type of rifle use.
The modification of FIG. 9 shows the use of an antirecoil butt plate 8 with a shoe 9 interposed between the plates and flush with plate 1. Machine screw 3 passes through apertures in the butt plate and in the shoe. Also used are centering and locating provisions, cooperating with bosses 1b as before.
As finally shown in FIG. 10 the butt plate 8 can have a design or motif or decoration impressed thereon or raised therefrom, in part or over the entirety of its peripheral side surface.
It will be realized from the foregoing description that either one or several butt plates can be interchangeable on the intermediate plate 1, and different accessories such as extension plates or shoes can be provided. This provision leads to significant reduction in the stock to be maintained and corresponding price of the unit, while allowing full diversity of the types of butt plate. Also the use of a single machine screw for fixing the butt plate to the intermediate plate facilitates and accelerates the interchange of the butt plate on the rifle.
What is claimed is:
