2,564,601 8/1951 Huot 206/379 1 Claim, 5 Drawing Figures 1 DRILL HOLDING CASE SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention herein relates to an improvement in a drill holding case and particularly represents an improvement over related structure set forth and disclosed in US. Pat. No. 1,930,617 issued on Oct. 17, 1933 to Eugene F. I-Iuot.
The improvement herein results in simplifyng the manufacture of the outer housing and the structure connection therewith to carry the drill holding member therein. The improvement specifically relates to a removable insert disposed within the outer casing to pivotally support the drill holding member within said outer housing.
It is an object of this invention therefore to provide a drill holding case or outer housing having means removably disposed therein to pivotally support a drill holding member.
It is more specifically an object of the invention herein to provide an outer housing, an insert removably disposed within said housing, said insert comprising a pair of spaced side walls having aligned pairs of inward projecting collars struck therefrom forming bearings and a drill holding member having a pair of outward projections struck therefrom journaled into an aligned pair of said first collars to be pivotally supported thereby.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
FIG. 1 is an exploded view in perspective;
FIG. 2 is a view in perspective of an assembled portion of the device herein;
FIG. 3 is-a view in perspective on an enlarged scale showing the device herein;
. FIG. 4 is a broken view in vertical section on an enlarged scale taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3 as indicated; and
FIG. 5 is a broken view in vertical section of a detail of structure herein taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 4 as indicated.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawings, the device herein comprises a drill holding case indicated generally by the reference numeral and said case comprises a housing 12 having end walls 14 and 16 and side walls 18 and 20. In the embodiment here illustrated, the side wall 18 is shown to have a somewhat greater length than the side wall 20 wherein the end wall 16 has an angular relationship to the end wall 14. Said housing has a bottom wall 23 and hinged to said side wall 18 by a conventional piano type hinge 24 is a shallow lid or cover 25.
A substantially U-shaped plate member 27 forms a removable insert for said housing comprising an end wall 29 having a pair of right angled forwardly extending side walls 31 and 32 and struck or punched therefrom and formed thereon as here shown are aligned pairs of inwardly projecting annular collars 35-36 and 37-38 forming bearings. Said collars are best illustrated by the collar 35 as shown in FIG. 5.
Said end wall 29 of said insert has a narrow upper inwardly extending flange 40 forming a back rest for the member 50 to be described and has a lower inwardly extending flange 4} of somewhat greater width.
With said insert 27 being disposed in said housing 12 as indicated in FIG. 3, a pair of tongue members 44 are struck from the bottom wall 23 of said housing and are bent inwardly to overly said flange 41 to removably secure said insert within said housing.
A drill holding member 50 such as illustrated is provided to be disposed within said insert 27. The specific design of said drill holding member is not part of the invention herein with the exception of its interfitting relationship with said insert 27 as will be described.
Said drill holding member comprises a back wall 51 having side walls 52 and 53. Carried between said side walls and secured to said back wall is a channel member 55 having its upper and lower walls ,apertured to provide graduated scaled openings to receive drills therein, said drills resting on the bottom wall 57 of said member 50.
Adjacent the lower ends of said side walls 52 and 53 are a pair of outwardly struck or punched projections here shown forming projecting annular shoulders 60 and 61, said shoulders being of such a diameter as to be received and accommodated within a pair of said aligned annular collars of said insert 27 such as annular collars 35 and 36. Illustrative of said shoulders is the shoulder 60 shown in FIG. 5 journaled within said bearing or annular collar 35. Thus said drill holding member 50 is pivotally disposed or mounted within said insert 27 and is raised to a vertical position as indicated in FIG. 3 for the insertion or removal of drills and for storage purposes said member 50 is pivoted or swungforwardly into a horizontal position.
With reference to FIG. 3 a second drill holding member 65 is indicated and will be of a structure as described in connection with the member 50.
The use of the above device is believed to be quite obvious from its description and the device provides a safe storage for drills and a convenient means for carrying drills about while having them handily disposed in a graduated relationship for ready use. The use of the insert 27 represents a substantialreduction in the otherwise cost of fabricating the outer housing or case to serve a like purpose.
It will of course be understood that various changes may be made in form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention herein which, generally stated, consists in an apparatus capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A drill holding case structure having in combination a housing having a bottom wall and upstanding end and side walls,
a substantially U-shaped plate member comprising an end wall and forwardly extending side walls forming an insert member,
projecting inwardly of said side walls are aligned pairs of collars,
means removably securing said insert member within said housing,
a drill holding member comprising a back wall and projecting side walls,
a pair of aligned outwardly extending projections adjacent the bottoms of said side walls received 3 4 within a pair of said aligned projecting collars of of said insert member, and said insert member, whereby said insert member a tongue struck from said bottom wall of said housing has said drill holding member pivotally disposed engages said projecting flange removably securing therein and is then disposed within said housing, said insert member.
a flange projecting from the bottom of the end wall 5
