Abstract

A typewriter correction device employing an adhesive ribbon which is movable on rotatable winding and storage rollers. The ribbon and rollers are held in an elongated casing having an opening through which the ribbon protrudes. The rollers are mounted and the ribbon trained in such a manner so that the rollers rotate in the same direction thereby adapting the device to move the adhesive ribbon easily and without the danger of tearing. The device is tapered at the open end to facilitate placing the ribbon on a typed character and gradually broadens at the opposite end to adapt the device to be easily handled.

The rollers are mounted and the ribbon trained in such a manner so that the rollers rotate in the same direction thereby adapting the device to move the adhesive ribbon easily and without the danger of tearing. The device is tapered at the open end to facilitate placing the ribbon on a typed character and gradually broadens at the opposite end to adapt the device to be easily handled.
2 Claims, 7 Drawing Figures a 1 TYPEWRITER CORRECTION DEVICE EMPLOYING AN ADHESIVE RIBBON RELATED APPLICATION This application is a continuation in part of the application of Victor Barouh et al for TYPEWRITER COR- RECTION MATERIALS EMPLOYING ADHESIVES.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to typewriter correction devices employing adhesives and is especially adapted for use in conjunction with typewriter ribbons of the type that are coated with a non-absorbent carbon material which doesnot wet the paper onto which it is typewritten. i i I 2. Description of the Prior Art Various types of typewriter ribbons have been devised in the past which are manufactured out of various nonabsorbent ink compositions of transfer materials which do not wet or dye the paper onto which the characters are printed. These transfer materials are generally of a relatively dry wax composition and may have one or more coatings for preventing penetration of the transfer material onto the paper.
Various types of correction ribbons for typewriters have been devised which include a transfer portion and an ink correction material such as in shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,141,539. However, in correcting errors made by a typewriter using non-absorbent non-penetrating non wetting ink, it has been found that complete removal of such ink material is preferable to coating thereof with a correction material and then striking a correct character thereover.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is the object of the present invention to provide a device for removing incorrect typed characters of nonpenetrating, non-absorbent, non-wetting transfer material, utilizing an adhesive correction ribbon. In carrying out the invention an adhesive correction ribbon is entrained on rollers in a casing, whereby the device is I adapted to be pressed onto an erroneously typed character. The adhesive correction ribbon or tape, by engagement with the character, lifts the erroneously typed character off the paper. A winding roller adapts the device whereby the correction ribbon can be moved so an unused section of ribbon can be exposed for the next correction application.
The device is elongated and tapered on the application end to facilitate engagement of the correction ribbon with an unwanted typed character. The rear portion of the device is broader than the front, to adapt the device to be easily held.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an I easily manipulated hand operated device for use in correcting typewritten errors that is simple in construction and capable of being inexpensively manufactured out of readily available materials.
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds are attained by the correction device. preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing by way of example only, wherein:

FIG. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken along the DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION With continuing reference to the accompanying drawing wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts, and with attention directed to FIG. 1 wherein there is shown a correction device 12 includ ing an adhesive correction ribbon 14 and a rotatable cylindrical winding roller 24.
The adhesive correction ribbon 14, as shown in FIG. 6, comprises a base 18 onto which is coated an adhesive layer 20 and on which may also be coated a'super coating 22 of a waxy material. which will facilitate the winding to the adhesive correction ribbon 14.
The ribbon 14 is entrained on cylindrical rotatable rollers 24, 26 and 28, as well as pin 30. The ribbon I4 is rolled onto the storage roller 26 at the rear of the correction device 12. The correction ribbon extends downwardly and forwardly from roller 26 to a guide pin 30, where the correction ribbon 14 is guided to a position where it is in horizontal alignment with the applicator roller 28. The ribbon 14 extends forwardly from the guide pin 30 and is entrained around the applicator roller 28 until the ribbon 14 is at the top edge of applicator roller 28. Ribbon 14 then extends rearwardly until it is received and wound onto the winding roller 24.
The rotatable rollers 24, 26, and 28 and the adhesive correction ribbon 14 are encased in an elongated casing 32 of any desired shape and made of metal, plastics, or other readily available material. Casing 32 tapers at the front end to an opening 34. In the opening 34 is mounted the applicator roller 28 so that roller 28 extends partially outwardly and forwardly of casing 32. The applicator roller 28 and the ribbon l4, engaged semicircularly with the front half of roller 28, are adapted to be able to be engaged with a typed dry ink character 36, as shown in FIG. 7, and thereby remove character 36.
The tapered forward portion of casing 32 enables the applicator roller 28 with the correction ribbon 14 to be pressed onto a typed character 36 while the paper 38 that is being corrected is still in place in a typewriter. Because of the tapered shape of the forward portion of casing 32 a typist must only backspace one space to expose the erroneous typewritten character and remove it using the correction device 12. The correct and desired impression is then made in place of the erroneously typed character.
The correction ribbon 14 can be moved to expose an unused section by rotating the winding roller 24. Roller 24 is partially exposed and extends outwardly through the rear section of casing 32 through a slot 40. The winding roller 24 is comprised of a cylindrical section for engaging and winding the correction ribbon l4, and a disk 25 of significantly larger diameter that is knurled and the portion of winding roller 24, which extends through the slot 40, facilitates manual manipulation.
In the embodiment shown, the rear section of casing is broader than the majority of casing 32 to adapt the device 12 for easy handling. The enlarged rear portion of casing 32 allows the device 12 to be held in the palm of the hand, and slot 40, with winding roller 24 situated therein, is positioned so that the users thumb can easily rotate knurled disk roller 24 while it is held.
The device 12 is adapted to be used easily and quickly to correct typing errors from non-penetrating,
quick typewriter corrections. The rollers 24, 26, and 28 are journalled for rotation in the casing 32.

What is claimed is:
1. Typewriter correction device adapted to be hand held comprising an elongated casing havinga broad end and a tapered end, rotatable cylindrical rollers in said broad end comprising a winding roller andstorage roller mounted on parallel axes, said winding roller being positioned forwardly of said storage roller toward the tapered end of said casing, a portion of said winding roller extending outwardly of said casing through an disc on said winding roller.

Claims (2)

1. Typewriter correction device adapted to be hand held comprising an elongated casing having a broad end and a tapered end, rotatable cylindrical rollers in said broad end comprising a winding roller and storage roller mounted on parallel axes, said winding roller being positioned forwardly of said storage roller toward the tapered end of said casing, a portion of said winding roller extending outwardly of said casing through an opening therein, an opening in the tapered end of said casing, an applicator roller rotatably mounted in said opening and extending partially outward of said opening and a correction ribbon having an adhesive coating facing outwardly, said ribbon being entrained on said rollers in such manner so that the winding end storage rollers rotate in the same direction for winding and guiding said ribbon into said tapered end opening, said device including guide means for positioning said ribbon in horizontal alignment with said applicator roller.
2. A device according to claim 1, including a knurled disc on said winding roller.
