Abstract

A filling detecting device for a narrow fabric loom has drop wires mounted on the breast beam for pivotal movement intermediate their ends adjacent a selvage of each narrow fabric delivery for movement responsive to a condition of filling yarn beyond a selvage actuating electrical means producing a change in operating condition of the loom in the absence of filling yarn.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Detecting devices, such as center fork stop motions and the like, have proved to be impractical for use on narrow fabric looms. Many efforts have been made to provide mechanical sensing means for detecting the presence or absence of filling yarn including detectors for sensing the run out of filling on the bobbins. Such devices have met with varying degrees of success. Other devices have employed photo electric means, but all such efforts have not satisfied the need for a dependable mechanical detecting device for a narrow fabric loom.
Accordingly, it is an important object of this invention to provide an improved mechanical detecting device for sensing the absence of filling yarn in a narrow fabric loom.
Another important object of this invention is to provide a reliable detecting device of the drop wire type amenable to operation on a narrow fabric loom of the standard types having a plurality of fabric deliveries such as tapes and the like.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It has been found that spaced drop wires may be carried intermediate their ends on a pivoted bar, one end of the drop wires extending forwardly into engagement with the filling yarn adjacent either side of each narrow fabric delivery for raising the other end of the drop wires to de-energize a circuit which would otherwise stop the loom. The action of the lay when moved in front center position closes a switch energizing the circuit activating the detecting means of the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features thereof.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, wherein an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
FIG. I is a schematic perspective view of one type of a narrow fabric loom illustrating a filling detecting device constructed in accordance with the invention used therewith, and
FIG. 2 is a schematic plan view further illustrating the detecting device and electrical components suitable for use therein.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The drawing illustrates a filling detecting device for a narrow fabric loom having a stationary support member and a lay carrying a plurality of shuttles each traversing a respective narrow fabric delivery for supplying filling yarn thereto. The yarn extends beyond a selvage of each delivery as the shuttles traverse. A plurality of elongated drop wires A, pivoted intermediate the ends thereof. are spaced so as to be positioned adjacent a selvage of each delivery at right angles to the lay.
Means B are provided for mounting the drop wires for movement responsive to a condition of filling yarn carried by the stationary member. The drop wires extend into engagement with said filling yarn adjacent a selvage. Electrical means C are actuated by the drop wires producing a change in operating condition of the loom in the absence of filling yarn. Switch means D actuated by the lay are provided energizing the electrical means for stopping the loom responsive to the drop wire. when said lay is in a forward position, in the absence of filling extending beyond the selvage. A conductive means E extends across each delivery. The drop wires are mounted in pairs in a medial portion thereof spaced adjacent each selvage of a narrow fabric delivery on the mounting means B which includes a pivoted horizontally disposed bar, said drop wires remaining pivoted in rearward position in the absence of said filling to engage the electrically conductive means.
Referring more particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2, it will be noted that the narrow fabric loom is illustrated as including a stationary support in the form of a breast beam 10, as well as a lay 11, which carries a plurality of shuttles 12. While the drawing illustrates a particular type of narrow fabric loom having plural deliveries, the present device may even be used on any type of narrow fabric loom including the single delivery type having a single shuttle or yarn supplying means. The lay also carries a back rack 13 which supports the usual reed wires 14 for accommodating the warp yarn 15 forming a shed 16.
Referring to FIG. 1, it will be noted that a number of narrow fabric deliveries 17, each with its own shuttle and other associated parts, form a part of the loom illustrated. The lay 11 is carried by the usual lay sword l8 and forms the delivery 17 by beating up the filling yarn l9 delivered by the shuttle 12 into the shed 16.
The drop wires A, each includes a forwardly extending portion 20 and a rearwardly extending portion 21. The forwardly extending portion 20 carries a downwardly extending yarn engaging member 20a. The member 20a carries an outwardly extending portion 20b for insuring engagement with that portion of the filling 19 extending on either side of the selvages 17a (FIG. 1). The rearwardly extending portion of the drop wires carries a downwardly extending contact 200 for completing the circuit for stopping the loom, as described in greater detail below.
Means B, provided for mounting the drop wires, includes a drop wire receiving member 22 which is carried by a pivoted horizontally disposed bar 23. The bar 23 is pivotally mounted in pillar blocks 24 on each end thereof and retaining members 25 are provided for positioning the bar within the pillar blocks 24.
Means C for producing a change in operating condition of the loom in the absence of filling yarn is illustrated as including a magnetic switch 26 having contacts 27 actuated by a coil 28 to energize the motor 29 (FIG. 2). It will be noted that the lines L1, L2 and L3 supply line voltage to the motor. A transformer 31 energizes a low energy relay system described below. The loom stop button 30 is interposed in the line energizing the coil 28. The relay 32 has normally closed contacts opened bya coil, which is energized when the switch D is engaged by the lay sword 18 and the drop wire contacts 20c are in contact with the conductive means E provided in the form of a metallic plate over which the narrow fabric deliveries 17 pass to suitable take-up means. It will be observed that the switch D is mounted on any suitable portion of the loom (not shown).
Thus, when the filling yarn runs out, the drop wires A remain in rearward position with the contacts c in engagement with the plate E closing the circuit from the transformer 31 through the switch D to ground and completing the circuit through the coil of the relay 32 to ground. Completion of the aforesaid circuit opens the normally closed contacts of the relay 32 opening the circuit to the coil 28, which normally maintains the contacts 27 closed, so as to discontinue the supply of line current to the motor. It will be seen, therefore, that if the filling supply becomes exhausted or discontinued for any reason that the drop wires will detect such condition and operate to stop the loom.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A filling detecting device for a narrow fabric loom having a stationary support member and a lay carrying a plurality of shuttles each traversing a respective narrow fabric delivery supplying filling yarn thereto, said yarn extending beyond a selvage of each delivery as the shuttles traverse comprising: a plurality of pairs of interconnected pivoted elongated drop wires spaced so that one drop wire of each pair is positioned adjacent a selvage of each delivery; means pivoting each pair of drop wires about a horizontal axis parallel to the lay in a medial portion thereof; means mounting said drop wires for movement responsive to a condition of filling yarn carried by the stationary member; said drop wires extending into engagement with said filling yarn adjacent a selvage; electrical means actuated by the drop wires producing a change in operating condition of the loom in the absence of filling yarn, and a yarn engaging portion carried adjacent one end of the drop wires and an electrical contact portion carried adjacent the other end of the drop wires.

The structure set forth in claim 1, wherein stationary member is a breast beam, and said lay actuates switch means actuated by the lay energizing electrical means for stopping the loom responsive to the drop wires, when said lay is in a forward position, in the absence of yarn extending beyond the selvage.
3. The structure set forth in claim 2 including, an electrically conductive means extending across said fabric delivery, and wherein said drop wires pivot in the presence of said filling to open a circuit which would otherwise stop the loom.
4. A filling detecting device for a narrow fabric loom having a stationary support member and a lay carrying yarn supplying means traversing a narrow fabric delivery supplying filling yarn thereto, said yarn extending beyond a selvage of said delivery on each traverse comprising: a pair of pivoted elongated drop wires spaced so as to be positioned adjacent a selvage of said narrow fabric delivery; means mounting said drop wires for movement responsive to a condition of filling yarn carried by the stationary member including a pivoted horizontally disposed longitudinal bar carrying said drop wires in a medial portion thereof at right angles thereto; said drop wires extending into engagement with said filling yarn adjacent a selvage; electrical means actuated by the drop wires producing a change in operating condition of the loom in the absence of filling yarn; and a yarn engaging portion carried adjacent one end of the drop wires and an electrical contact portion carried adjacent the other end of the drop wires.

Claims (4)

1. A filling detecting device for a narrow fabric loom having a stationary support member and a lay carrying a plurality of shuttles each traversing a respective narrow fabric delivery supplying filling yarn thereto, said yarn extending beyond a selvage of each delivery as the shuttles traverse comprising: a plurality of pairs of interconnected pivoted elongated drop wires spaced so that one drop wire of each pair is positioned adjacent a selvage of each delivery; means pivoting each pair of drop wires about a horizontal axis parallel to the lay in a medial portion thereof; means mounting said drop wires for movement responsive to a condition of filling yarn carried by the stationary member; said drop wires extending into engagement with said filling yarn adjacent a selvage; electrical means actuated by the drop wires producing a change in operating condition of the loom in the absence of filling yarn, and a yarn engaging portion carried adjacent one end of the drop wires and an electrical contact portion carried adjacent the other end of the drop wires.

The structure set forth in claim 1, wherein stationary member is a breast beam, and said lay actuates switch means actuated by the lay energizing electrical means for stopping the loom responsive to the drop wires, when said lay is in a forward position, in the absence of yarn extending beyond the selvage.
3. The structure set forth in claim 2 including, an electrically conductive means extending across said fabric delivery, and wherein said drop wires pivot in the presence of said filling to open a circuit which would otherwise stop the loom.
4. A filling detecting device for a narrow fabric loom having a stationary support member and a lay carrying yarn supplying means traversing a narrow fabric delivery supplying filling yarn thereto, said yarn extending beyond a selvage of said delivery on each traverse comprising: a pair of pivoted elongated drop wires spaced so as to be positioned adjacent a selvage of said narrow fabric delivery; means mounting said drop wires for movement responsive to a condition of filling yarn carried by the stationary member including a pivoted horizontally disposed longitudinal bar carrying said drop wires in a medial portion thereof at right angles thereto; said drop wires extending into engagement with said filling yarn adjacent a selvage; electrical means actuated by the drop wires producing a change in operating condition of the loom in the absence of filling yarn; and a yarn engaging portion carried adjacent one end of the drop wires and an electrical contact portion carried adjacent the other end of the drop wires.
