A. BURROWES.
PROPELLEB FOR CANAL BOATS, &o.
Patented May 28, 1889.
w RWR l 'VI/III/IIIII/II section, of a model of a canal-boat.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT BURROWES, OF HEMLOOK, ONTARIO, CANADA.
PROPELLER FORIICANAL-BOATS, 8w.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 404,072, dated May 28, 1889. Application filed June 17, 1886. Renewed October 10, 1888. Serial No. 287,783. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BURRO'WES,
lumberman, of the hamlet of Hemlock, in the county of Norfolk, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented an Improved Propeller Specially Adapted for Canal-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to design a propeller which will effectually operate Without causing any back-wash or agitation of the water calculated to injure the banks of the canal; and it consists in the peculiar combinations and the novel construction and arrangement of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partially in Fig. 2 is a detail plan of the propelling-wings and rod to which they are attached.
YVhile my invention is specially designed for use in canal boats, it will of course be applicable to any class of boat Where it may be desired to provide propulsion-power without unduly agitating the water.
In the drawings, A represents two inverted troughs, extending from stem to stern of the boat and located on either side of the keel. These troughs being open are necessarily always filled with water, and being so far below the surface of the water any slight agitation of the water within the troughs will not in any way affect the main body of water upon which the boat is floating. \Vithin each of these troughs A, I support in suitable bearings, B, a rod or shaft, 0. Each of these shafts C is connected to a suitable motor or motors within the boat, either by means of cranks, eccentrics, or other suitable mechanical devices by which the rods or shaft may derive a longitudinal reciprocating motion.
At suit-able points along the length of the rods or shafts C, I hinge a series of wings, D, and as each rod or shaft 0 derives its longitudinal reciprocating motion each series of wings hinged to it will open out when the rod moves in one direction and present resisting surfaces against the body of the water in which they are submerged, thereby propelling the boat as desired, while when the shaft or rod moves in the reverse direction all the wings hinged to it collapse and present substantially no resistance to the forward motion of the boat. It will thus be seen that my invention, when applied to a boat in the manner specified, will provide the necessary propulsion-power without causing any agitation of the water.
To limit the motions of the valves, I provide curved bars E, one for each valve or pair of valves. Each curved bar passes through the shaft 0 and through the valves D, and serves as a guide and support for the outer end thereof. Upon each side of the valx e the curved bar is provided with a stop, 6, to limit the movement of the said valves.
I am aware that pivoted paddles have been Secured to. one end of a piston-rod and operated between segmental plates, and make no claim to such construction as forming part of my invention.
By the employment of my light curved bars I avoid the friction incident to the use of the segmental plates, and by the use of the stops e, between the valves and the shaft 0, I prevent the said valves from closing close to said shaft, whereby they are more readily and easily opened out.
I am also aware that it is not new to reciprocate a shaft journaled within an inverted trough extending from stem to stern of the Vessel, parallel with the keel, and to hinge valve to such shaft, and such, broadly, I disclaim.
WVhat I claim as my invention is- As a means for propelling vessels, open inverted troughs A, located on each side of the keel and extending from stem to stern, in combination with a reciprocating rod or shaft, 0, journaled Within each of the troughs, a series of valves or wings, D, hinged to each of the shafts, and a curved bar, E, secured to each shaft, passed through said valves, and provided with stops 6 upon opposite sides of the valves, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
A. BURROWES.
In presence of- CHARLES C. BALDWIN, ALICE KATE THOMPSON.
