SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,166, dated May 28, 1889.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM C. .BURTCII and ELBERT M. GURNEE, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Secret Nail Drivers and Sets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention relates to an improved nail driving and setting device; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of the various parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of our invention is to provide a tool which drives and sets the nail by the same operation, and in constructing the same We employ a cylinder, B, which is form ed with a central vertical bore, I, and communieating with this bore is a. series of slots or apertures, B', cut in the cylinder B and extending nearly the entire length of the same. Through the bore I is passed the main shaft or tube D, upon which the cylinder revolves. The upper end of lthe tube D is threaded to 'receive an apertured knob or handle, a, and
the lower end is threaded internally to receive the shouldered nut D", by which it is secured to the cylinder B, and to prevent the tube or shaft passing down through said cylinder and to provide a uniform movement of the same, we form a ratchet-wheel, G, upon the shaft D, just abovethe upper end of the cylinder, said wheel having as many teeth as there are chambers in the magazine, and adapted to engage with the spring-pawl G', secured to the upper face of the cylinder B. The nut D is provided with the diverging slots e' c' in its lower part, said slots being adapted to receive thc spring-knives or cutting-blades E,and to hold said cutting-blades securely we employ a nut, f, which, working upon the nut D", compresses the same to a certain extent, bringing the sides of the slots close together, which grip the ends of the knives and securely hold them in position. The nut falso extends outward a sufficient distance to act as a shoulder to support the cylinder B and jacket C, which is placed around said cylinder.
Vhen the cylinder, main shaft, and jacket are in position, it will be seen that a magazine having a series of chambers is formed surrounding the main tube, said chambers being adapted to receive the nails to be driven, and to provide a means for supplying the nails to said chambers We cut a slot or opening, C', in the jacket, and the portion of the main shaft held within the bore I is also slotted, as at D', to permit the nails to enter the bore of the main tube, where they are acted upon by the driver F, carried Within said tube, the slots C and D' corresponding in size to the slots B' of the cylinder.
The bore of the lower portion of the main tube D is somewhat smaller than the upper part, thus forming a shoulder, CZ', which limits the downward movement of the driver F,
Working in the main tube, the upper and lower portions of said driverbeing shaped to correspond with the upper and lower bores, respectively. The upper and larger part of the driver F is provided with a lug, d, which works in a vertical slot, c, cut in the side of tube D, and is adapted to engage with the lug'or projection p, carried by the knob a, whereby the reciprocating movement of the driver is limited and prevents its being drawn out too far. The upper end of the driver F is provided with a handle, b, and just beneath said handle and surrounding the driver is the metallic sleeve or collar e, which impinges against the knob d, and to prevent any injury the under side of said sleeve may be cushioned in any well-known manner. The jacket C is provided with the milled or chased ring g, and the cylinder B is provided With a similar ring, g', said rings affording a convenient grip when operating the device. The construction of our device having been described, we will now proceed to describe its manner of use and the operation of its various parts.

The combined nail driving and setting implement, constructed substantially as shown and described, is ready to receive the nails to be driven, and to feed said nails. The j aeket C is moved around until the slot C coincides with one of the slots B. rlhe nail 7L is then introduced into the chamber and the cylinder revolved the distance of one tooth of ratchet G, which brings another chamber opposite the slot C. Another nail is then introduced, and se on. The operation is continued until the magazine is filled. Then the niagazine is iilled and it is desired to drive and set a nail at any particular place, the driver F is drawn upward until the lu g d strikes the projection p, and the lower portieri of the driver being removed from the lower part of main tube and discharge hole o the nail Vwhich is in the chamber opposite the slot D passes into the main tube directly beneath the driver F. The nail is prevented from dropping through the discharge-hole o by the spring cutting-blades E, which are normally held together,`as shown in Fig. 2, and forni a single cutting-edge. The blades, in a closed position, are placed where the nail is to be driven, and by a slight blow upon the knob a are inserted the desired distance below the surface of the board. The driver F is now made to descend, and by hammering` the same upon knob l) the nail 71. is driven through the discharge-opening o, forces the blades E apart, and enters the wood. By one or two sharp blows the nail is set below the surface of the wood, and when the blades are withdrawn a smooth cut only is left, which can quickly be closed by a little soaking with water, thus leaving the head of the nail completely buried beneath the wood.
lVhen another nail is to be driven and set, the cylinder is revolved until another nailcontaining chamber is brought into coincidence with the slotD, and the operations are then again repeated. \Vhen the magazine is emptied, the jacket is moved around and the chamber refilled, as already described. '.lhe jacket C is held to the cylinder by frictional contact only7 and usually revolves with said cylinder.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is l. In anail driving' and setting implement, the combination of a main tube slotted at one side to receive the nails, the driver-bar earried within said tube, and the spring' cuttingblades mounted in the lower end of the tube on each side oi the driver-bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination,with the main tube provided with a slot to receive the nails, of the shouldered nut secured in its lower end and carrying the spring-blades E, the knob (1.,carrying projection 2), and the driver I1`,working in the main tube and provided with the lug (l, adapted to slide in groove c and engage with projection p, substantially as shown and described.
In a nail driving and setting implement, the eoxnbination,with a main tube carrying a driver within the same and having in its lower end the spring-blades E, of a magazine secured upon said main tube and adapted to revolve around the same, substantially as shown and described.

The conibinatiomwith the main tube provided with a slot to receive the nails and carrying the blades E at its lower end, ot' a driver working in said tube and between the knives, a cylinder secured upon the main tube and slotted, as shown, and the jacket (l, surrounding the cylinder ll, substantiz'tlly as shown and described.

In a nail driving and setting implement, the eon1binat-ion,with a main tube having ditferent-sized bores and slotted to receive the nails, of a driver working in said tube and shaped te correspond with said tube, theknob a, secured to the main tube and carryingprojection p, the lug (Z, formed on driver F and sliding in groove ccntininain tube, the ratchet-wheel Gr, east upon main tube and adapted to engage with the spring-pawl Gr', the cylinder B, and jacket C, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
6. In a nail driving and setting implement, the combination, with a main tube slotted to receive the nails, of the driver F, working in said tube, the cylinder B, secured tothemain tube and turning on thc same, the slotted jacket C, surrounding the cylinder li, the shouldered nut D, slotted to receive the blades E, the nut f, working on nut D, the ratchet G, formed upon main tube, and the springpawl G', adapted to engage with said ratchet, substantially as shown and described.
7. A nail driving and setting imjilement having a slitting device comprising a pair of blades at its delivery end, said blades beingl disposed upon each side ot the driver-bar ol" the iniplemcnt,wl1ereby a slot in the material for the reception of the nail to be driven and set maybe opened,substantially as described.
